In fairness, this one of his strengths - playing backup keeper and performing when called upon.

I always thought that's why he racked up about 1,000 caps for Argentina despite a sketchy career. It's a rather unique trait to have (and great for us, obviously).

2 very good saves to stop Rooney getting his almost fated goal. It’s almost a shame he’s happy being a 2nd keeper here as he could be good for lots of top teams still.

Fine performance tonight and a couple or crucial - and splendidly executed - saves.

Glad he's ours. Model professional and a damned fine Goalkeeper in his own right.

Weirdly one of the most underrated keeper in the world. How the feck did he get here. One of the best buys post Fergie.

Possibly the most over rated player we’ve ever had.

It’s genuinely laughable that people claim his clean sheets against third division and second rate European sides are somehow comparable to De Gea playing against top PL clubs. Even in poor form De Gea is still miles better. We’d be completely fecked if Romero was playing every match. He’s a decent back up and nothing more. Why people act like he’s a top 4 starter despite him never starting for a top club is beyond me.

Happy for him that wee progressing in the cups. He’s likely to end the season on anywhere between 15-20 starts, which is quite a lot for a back up keeper.

I can understand thinking he might be somewhat overrated on the Caf but surely you don't actually believe what you wrote there. Just his service with the Argentine national team alone should be deserving of lot of respect, not to mention the many times he stepped up for United. "Decent" is an insult to the guy.

I think he's a very good keeper - very good positioning and excellent reflexes. He'd easily be a good starting keeper for any PL team imo - even for us. He's always good when he played for Argentina, and bar one or two games excellent for us. It's a shame he's wasted his prime being a backup, but I guess money and options are harder to come by for a goalkeeper.

There is no somewhat about it, he is overrated to delusional levels by the united fan base.

And his service of sitting on benches in Sampdoria, Monaco and here deserve the respect of being called what he is, a decent to pretty good keeper. Nothing more.

Claiming he is better than De Gea, or can start for any top team is an insult to anyone with eyes.

He's a good example of how form doesn't always get rewarded or punished. He should definitely be given a few league games while DDG takes some time out of the limelight, but that won't happen. Not when he's on 350k a week, it won't. Some players just have to play no matter, poor form or not.

Who cares if he was benched at previous clubs? Goalkeeping is unforgiving. Make a howler or two early on and you're deemed suspect, and it is an uphill battle from there. It took seasons for DDG to win over here and he was probably one or two mistakes from being dropped and gone. Plenty of top keepers get benched at one club and go on to better things.

Romero hasn’t gone on to better things though. He’s been benched at club after club after club. Why? Because he isn’t this top keeper people are trying to make him out to be.

De Gea is a keeper with world class ability. Romero is nowhere near that. They really aren’t comparable, at all.

De Gea is the highest paid player in the Premier league yet is literally costing us points through his complete incompetence at some of the basic elements of goalkeeping.

Romero (who's probably on a fifth of De Gea's wages, if even) comes in and makes the whole defence look much more solid every time (despite playing with our second choice team almost every time).

Yet, to you, it's Romero that's overrated.

It's delusion like this that's part of the reason why we're a mid-table side.

De Gea plays week in week out against the top clubs in the world who are better than us.

Sergio Romero comes in against League One clubs and second European league clubs who we dominate.

Yet to you that is the same thing.

It’s delusion like this that makes him ridiculously overrated. It’s delusion like this that means we aren’t in the bottom half of the table and are actually still close to 4th.

Strange how manager after manager after manager have deemed Romero not good enough. Why is De Gea paid so much? Because he’s way better than Romero. Why were we so desperate for De Gea to stay? Because he’s way better than Romero. Why weren’t we willing to let De Gea go and rely on Romero? Because he’s nowhere near good enough, deemed by all 3 managers we’ve had as well as the managers of his two previous clubs.

Yes, I know that, that's the problem here, he's playing every week and playing badly, and to make matters worse, he's the highest paid player in the Premier league.
How can that not be a problem?

If by we, you mean, those of you who are clearly stuck in the past and can't see how much of an issue De Gea's overall game is to the way we are now wanting to play (as opposed to Mourinhio's Park the bus tactics), then you're correct.

If by we, you mean the many of us on here who realised a long time ago that giving De Gea that hideous contract was going to be a massive error, then you're incorrect.

If you want to only focus on his league games at United, he has 6 clean sheets in 7 Premier League appearances.

He's only been benched at United because he arguably had the world's best goalkeeper in front of him at one point, yet LVG, Mourinho and now Ole all want to play him enough to keep him at the club, because they value him. They know we have a ridiculously good #2 and we'd be absolutely loathed to lose him.

Why would I place such importance on the past opinions of Delio Rossi and Claudio Ranieri when assessing the Sergio Romero of today? By your reckoning, we should have been no where near VDS.

Calling Romero “possibly the most over rated player we’ve ever had” is ridiculous hyperbole, ironically.

He’s clearly an excellent backup keeper, as evidenced by his coming in and performing very well 95% of the time.

Romero may not be called upon in matches as often as DDG is (though it should be noted here that DDG tends to perform worse when he doesn’t have much to do) but when he is, he’s generally been very solid or sometimes even better than that. It’s testament to how good he’s been that his blunder against Bruges came as such a shock - Swansea under LVG aside, he’s made very few howlers in his United career.

Problem with De Gea is that he’s not a commanding goalkeeper. A very talented shot stopper but not commanding enough. Romero is miles better in that aspect and that’s why he makes the whole defence look much more solid and confident every time he plays. We’re lucky to have him as our no 2.

Romero has conceded 69 goals in 96 starts for Argentina. In the 2016 Copa America he conceded 2 goals in 6 games. In the 2015 Copa America he conceded 3 goals in 6 games. In the 2014 World Cup he conceded 4 goals in 7 games (3 of which went to extra time). The winners Germany, also conceded 4 goals in the tournament. In the knock-out stages, the only goal he conceded came in extra time in the final. All 3 finals were 0-0 at the end of normal time. Twice they lost to Chile on penalties in the Copa America. In the 2018 World Cup, the winners France, conceded 6 goals in 7 games. 3rd place Belgium conceded 6 goals in 7 matches. Finalists Croatia conceded 5 until the final, plus 4 in the final.

In the matches he missed between his first start and his most recent start, Argentina conceded 39 goals in 32 games and another 5 goals after he went off injured after 22 mins against Spain. In the most recent Copa America 2019, Romero dropped, Argentina conceded 6 goals in 6 games. In the most recent World Cup, with Romero injured, they conceded 9 goals in 4 games.

De Gea has conceded 35 goals in 40 starts for Spain. In the games he has missed between his first start and his most recent start, Spain conceded 20 goals in 25 games. The less said about De Gea's performances in the most recent World Cup, the better.

When Romero started for Sampdoria he conceded 39 goals in 2012-13, with a save percentage of 71% in Serie A. In 2014-15 he made 9 starts in Serie A, his save percentage was 72% (this season in Serie A, the respective save percentages for the keeper with most starts, from bottom of the table to top, when I looked last week were: 71, 65, 61, 60, 68, 67, 67 , 64, 67, 71, 62, 77, 74, 70, 60, 67, 59, 75, 76, 78). De Gea achieved a heroic 80% in the PL in Mourinho's 2nd season and an impressive 78% - 79% during Sir Alex's last two seasons. Then between 69% to 72% in Moyes/LVG/Mourinho year 1. Last 2 seasons 68% and 69%.

In his 7 PL starts, Romero's save percentage is 91%. This includes a match against Spurs at home and saving a penalty against Southampton. In the Europa League his save percentage is 85%. In the FA Cup 94%. League Cup 76%.

When we won the Europa League during Mourinho's first season, De Gea conceded 4 goals in 3 games against Fenerbahce and Feyenoord. Romero conceded 4 goals in 12 starts.

Romero doesn't appear to have had a problem keeping clean sheets in high pressure games for Argentina. He almost certainly isn't as good as De Gea at his peak. But when elite shot stopper De Gea is only saving about 70% of shots on target, then there are plenty of keepers who are better than him, and that group includes Romero, as is blindingly obvious from all the stats I've mentioned above. De Gea needs a high save percentage because he is so reluctant to act as a sweeper keeper or to come for crosses. All that leaves is distribution, both are ok but neither are that good; Romero more likely to kick the ball into touch while attempting a long pass, while from time to time, De Gea's medium range passes can gift the ball straight to the opposition.

The reason De Gea starts for us right now is the same reason LVG kept selecting Rooney during his 2nd season and the reason Moyes thought Vidic and Ferdinand should start games when he first arrived; they had all earned so much credit over the years, that the manager was reluctant to drop them for their underwhelming current form, even when it had gone on for far too long.

Exactly my point, well said, it's pretty much a minimum requirement for a goalkeeper to at least attempt to be brave/commanding/vocal.
The last thing you would want a keeper to be is timid/reserved.

Enter Man Utd, where not only do we have one of the most timid/reluctant goalkeepers ever to play the game but we also make him the highest paid player in the Premier league.

How people cannot see how much of a problem this has been, and still is, for our defence is genuinely baffling.

On top of that, consider the quality of defenders De Gea has had in front of him when playing for Spain compared to Romero with Argentina.

The likes of of Pique/Ramos vs the likes of DeMicheles/Otamendi, yet De Gea still leaks more goals.

The excuses are running out.

Look no further than Tottenham and Liverpool's exits from the FA Cup for examples of what is means to have a reliable back-up keeper. Their mistakes in goal played huge parts in them losing their games.

Whether or not he would be better than DDG if he played all games is pure speculation. There really is no evidence, and his clean sheet stats are obviously somewhat inflated by the opposition he faces. I do think he should get the chance in DDG keeps maken mistakes, though. Last season that played a big part in us not getting top four.

I'd defo play him for a few games personally. It's a weird position goalkeeper that no matter how shit they play, or how well the back up plays with the chances he gets, the number 1 rarely gets dropped.

DDG really does deserve a kick up the arse.

Romero does need a run as number 1. He can’t do any worse than DDG right now surely? But it’ll never happen.

I would definitely accept the offer if a good bid was made for De Gea because I would be very confident with Romero and Henderson. The money could further boost the transfer budget and we wouldn't need to buy a replacement GK.

Romero is a top keeper but I do not think he is as good as Degea when you consider all the aspects. He also doesn't command the area and neither does DeGea. Yes I think he is better than DeGea for the aerial ball but not that different. His handling is also a bit suspect. The clubs we faced in the EL under Jose was as good as you would get against most club in the PL apart from the top 5 clubs. Yet he played very well.
His keeping for Argentina should also be counted and I think he played in a WC Final and that says a lot for his calibre. There are lots of keepers who are much worse than Romero playing in the PL and other leagues. I really wonder why he is willing to be the number 2 at United? Maybe because Argentina will select him even though he is not playing regularly? For sure there are plenty of clubs who would hire him as their number 1.
I see that he has also suffered a lot of injuries too so maybe the reason why he is satisfied to be the number 2 and play in limited cup games.

He could be any team's main goal keeper and does well at it. I'm thankful He decides to be our 2nd keeper.
No idea what the 3rd is doing, though.
