The scouts, the manager, and everyone else on the footballing side of the club shouldn't be reporting to Woodward though. They should be reporting to the DoF and he should be in charge of building that off-the-field team (and on-the-field as well). Ultimately if the DoF obviously isn't doing the job well enough then Woodward should come in and sack him, and he should also set the overall expectations for the DoF to work towards (play good football, blood youngsters when possible and get us back towards the top over the next few years) and set the funds available, but otherwise he shouldn't be involved in that side of things.

It's like a banker owning a business that they don't really know much about. They can try to be hands-on in making all the decisions and hiring and promoting all the staff themselves, or they can go out and headhunt an expert who has done a brilliant job at a similar business and put them in charge of running the thing, while the banker focuses purely on the finances and making the business as profitable as possible.
I would imagine that the model you describe is basically what Woodward does.

This could be the best thing Ed can do to compensate all the mistakes he did over the years.
Looks like Ralf is a real football person with an eye for talent.

He can bring "Werner and Upamecano" with him in this summer and then 3 more from the below list.

Sancho
Hevertz/Grealish/Maddison/VanBeek
Saul/Neves/Soumare

Then we will be set for the next few years.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time

I'm pretty sure he's not as hands-on as many seem to think he is, but I'm equally sure that he is more hands-on than what I described he should be. And if the people around him who he relies on keep making mistakes, it ultimately comes back on him if he keeps them in their positions.

I would assume that a DoF would have a strong say in the appointment of managers. So, in case a manager is leaving, the system need not be reworked, a new manager who fits the philosophy could be hired. It would make sense that somebody with footballing knowledge makes these decisions rather than the executives.
Nothing is fool proof. If Woodward is blamed currently for a failed manager, why should a DoF appoint the next manager if his previous one fails? Is that not how it works? What if the DoF is rubbish? Every is basically advocating handing the entire football club over to this magic man. Choose the manager, choose the footballers, choose the tactics, choose the scouts. If he fails at his job we are truly fecked.

Let him go Milan for few seasons whilst we see how Ole does.

So Zvonomir Boban was against the appointment of Rangnick and he left Milan now, said in an interview that everything is agreed with Rangnick to join Milan next season.
Another one bites the dust

I really can't see him coming now, no matter how much I want him. Maybe Campos could still be an option?!

To the people wanting Rangnick and Campos. Wouldn't it be just as beneficial if we hired someone like Dan Ashworth from within our country?

I also think Marcel Bout would be a good appointment if we go the internal route.

Do we even need one?

Ole for me has hit 5/5 in his signings so far. Perhaps he genuinely does know what a good player looks like.

Adding another person in between him and Woodward, is it really needed? I guess time will tell. (depending if Ole stays a long time I suppose)

Might come back and and bite us in the butt later as circumstances can change rapidly in football, but yeah — for the time being, things are looking up and we don't have an urgent need for a thoroughbred Director of Football to conduct/restructure the club as Solskjær has exceeded expectations as manager after being shortchanged in the summer and having the misfortune of losing key performers to injuries/illness at crucial junctures of the season.

Van der Sar, on the other hand, could be a positive addition as some sort of deputy Chief Executive Officer as I still don't trust Woodward, but that's unlikely to happen, isn't it? Chief Transfer Negotiator Matt Judge is another dubious figure, but his job is likely to be safe considering he is in cahoots with Ed as another Bristol alumnus.

At the most, we might need a Technical Director (specializing in recruitment) whose vision aligns with Ole's to lend a helping hand in the market, rather than a Rangnick type figure (who will seek to impose his principles on the club rather than follow Solskjær's lead). Paul Mitchell was touted quite heavily in the past and he might be an appropriate appointment as he has only been a Technical Director or Chief Scout in recent years — as long as he doesn't destabilize the delicate hierarchy with Bout/Nielsen/Herrmann, which seems to be bearing fruit of late, in terms of creating a too many cooks environment in the scouting department...and is ratified by Ole, of course — and his Tottenham situation is studied more closely:
Paul Mitchell has resigned from his post as Tottenham Hotspur’s head of recruitment after he felt his dream job turn into a nightmare. The 34-year-old was prised from Southampton in November 2014 to oversee the club’s recruitment and analysis departments and he followed the manager, Mauricio Pochettino, from St Mary’s to north London.

He had simply had enough at White Hart Lane and the frustrations were so great and the job satisfaction so little that he chose to inform the board of his desire to quit.

It has been suggested that Mitchell struggled to work with the chairman, Daniel Levy, the notoriously hard-line negotiator, who has long taken a hands-on role in player recruitment. Mitchell will now serve a period of notice, which will include the remainder of the summer transfer window. He is a diplomatic but fiery character and, once his mind is made up, there can be no changing it.

Very weird, that's a lot of responsibility. Pioli's done great since the restart (best I've seen Milan play in a while) and Rangnick's never coached in Italy. Could work, could all end in tears. Gazidis is a weirdo.
They’ve been in the wilderness for to long. You can’t blame them for trying to make quality back room investments. No matter how good their restart.

Luckhurst made some good points on a pod a day or two ago, about a DoF. We've been extending contracts, and at any hint of (probably agent leaked) interest from other clubs, rewarding new contracts (Lindelof - linked with Barca), that have not been merited in the slightest. A DoF would halt that madness.

We still desperately need more competency in the hierarchy. We extended Smalling, Rojo and Jones under Ole, improved Lindelof's and Pereira's contracts. Locked de Gea in a monster deal (which most people at the time were happy about). We're nowhere near shrewd enough.

Spent a full summer haggling with Leicester then paying the stated price known for months. Spent a month haggling over Bruno, a player we'd already been looking at many months prior. Probably could have spent less on James too, not that it was big money.

I did listen to that podcast and he was particularly scathing about Lindelof.

Yep. The Woodward/Judge thread went away during The Unbeaten Streak but that thread should pretty much always be at the top of the list.

Judge is crap. Some of the contracts he gives out are hilarious given that United are United, and yet still give out contracts to players who wouldn't get those same contracts at other top PL clubs.

Sense prevails at last. The Rangnick appointment just never did sit right.

I have no idea if Rangnick would have been a good appointment or not for Milan but changing ones mind about it, because of a good run in very unusual circumstances is pretty shocking. They were willing to hand over all decision-making power to him, but Pioli having a good 10 games spell was enough to convince them otherwise? Thats insane.
