The scouse are really deluded if they think everyone is going to sacrifice a full seasons football across all competitions just so they can finish this league. Utterly ridiculous. That said many seem to think it makes sense to complete this season next month behind closed doors despite the fact the whole country is in lockdown. To compound it all the suggestions that we polish of this term next year is equally daft.

Oh really?!
Every league wants to finish the season?!
You don't seem to read what's going on in other European leagues

Do you think the players are clockwork soldiers - wind them up and start playing?!

I really don't know who's borderline deluded, antagonizing and an idiot here - certainly not me.
Yes, every league wants to finish the season.

And no, you are definitely the deluded one. Thinking that the team leading the table has anything to do with the league wanting to earn money it's clubs desperately need is exactly that - deluded.

And by the way, I didn't even say it should be finished. I was explaining that it has nothing to do with the teams currently at the top and everyone with basic economic insights should understand that. If it actually is possible is another debate.

Even advocating for the games to be played behind closed doors ignores other aspects that would make the games difficult to be played out. Obviously you'll have many games taking place on one weekend, and at those games you will need emergency services which absolutely should not be pulled away from doing what they're doing now, so that's completely impractical.

Then you have the staff that need to be there when the stadium is open, the chefs that prepare the food, the hotels that need to be open and the staff that need to be there to operate them when teams play away. So playing behind closed doors isn't really a panacea, either.

I highly doubt they're thinking about football in Italy or Spain right now. It is inhumane and irresponsible to just call the players back and expose them to a virus that has people dying and entire countries in lockdown.

All the noises are that this season is going to be finished whatever means how. And with I'm guessing a semi flexible Euro 2021 date and the winter world cup there's a lot of wriggle room, ultimately this pandemic could actually inadvertedly allow the season after next to finish right before Qatar, then after that they will slowly get it back to a August-May schedule (which a lot of the theory's of voided season's are based on the fact the higher ups are desperate to stick to that timeframe season by season at all costs, which I don't think is the case).

And this isn't a hopeful scouser talking either, my team has everything to gain from a voided season so if I thought it was likely or even potentially happening I'd be peddling the notion the loudest to try and convince myself but I just can't see it, possibly if we had a set schedule we had to abide by but the extra wriggle room available for the next 2/3 years mean it will be fitted in somehow.

seen a few articles suggesting this might happen, and it seems a bit crazy but you never know.. I saw they postponed a six nations match because of it

is there even a rule for something like this?

would Liverpool still get the title?
This was the first post on this matter. Just been reading all the comments from when this thread first started.
It's a interesting read.

I mean playing behind closed doors makes sense if the worst of the pandemic it is largely over in a sensible time frame to complete the season. So at a point when the infection rate is controlled and everything functions somewhat normally, but the larger crowds are still banned.

The league have naturally said they'll do their best to play it out.

But organisers often put a brave face on it. And they honestly can't say anything else. If they start publicising dates by which it has to be finished, or saying they might void it, they're opening themselves up to all manner of issues.

The Olympics organisers were adamant that was going ahead until the last couple of days when reality hit home.

They'll be hoping it goes away soon and we can legitimately play out the season. What happens in other Euro leagues makes a huge difference too. If they all void, and are determined to run a normal season with European competitions, we can't sit outside of that.

I agree with all you said San but this is not something that is going away quickly unfortunately.
Before a vaccine OR a medicine currently being used (tried and tested as safe) for other diseases, which could also work on the Corona virus too, then it's going to be a long slog.

A medicine called Avigan which is used for malaria is being tested and has been approved to try out in Italy.

Yes unfortunately , they can hope it restarts soon, but we'll probably be lucky to see any action in 2020.

What a dreadful year so far. All those storms and then this!

I wrote a post above on how even playing behind closed doors, within a sensible time frame, still brings up a lot of logistical nightmares. Emergency services having to be deployed at games, when they obviously shouldn't be, staff at the stadiums, staff at hotels. That's not going to happen any time soon, so then you're talking about adjusting next season to finish this one. Which shouldn't happen.

If fans were toklld to stay the feck away or no more football they would stay the feck away.
If West Ham fans, for example, tried to con a void season by showing up then Id relegate them there and then

If the worst is over by begging to middle of July you'd think all the of the above would be possible to achieve. But the crowds are not coming back anytime soon I don't think. Even if we are just talking about next season. There's going to be a point when packing 75 000 people in a stadium won't be allowed, but playing behind closed doors will be viable.

I think they have to say what they are saying at the moment. They can't be too quick to dismiss it. Looking at things logically though there's no chance they simply pick this back in several months time to force it to a conclusion. Just can't see it happening as it would be not only impossible to navigate the many issues this would present but by that time no one would be particularly interested and it would be a damp squib. Just think about it. Still carrying on with the 2019 season in 2021. Totally daft and won't happen. I fully suspect they will monitor the virus and speak with other top leagues in Europe to see what they are looking to do so they can come to a joint agreement. Everything points to cancellation though in my opinion as even if you take the virus out of it you'd need a month or so pre season to get the players match fit. Just not conceivable at this point whatever slant you put on it.

If football can start again in August/September (with fans, forget any behind closed doors nonsense) then void this season, just start fresh.
However if it's next January before we can start then it would make sense to finish this season

Let’s say no football is played for the rest of this year, and the “totally daft” idea of continuing the season in the first half of next year doesn’t happen, and this season is voided. What would you do with the first six months of next year?

I'm genuinely curious if other countries give this much of a feck about finishing the league season given the world is falling apart? I mean it's looking more and more like we wont see any football until 2021 IMO, are we really supposed to do a Kanye and tell Liverpool Swift that we are going to let them finish? It's crazy.

Transfer business and extended pre-season training camps to get ready for the new season later in the year.

I imagine the football fans are concerned about football all around the he world. I don't get this line of thinking that nobody should even think about how football because there's a pandemic. Football is important to a lot of people, there's not a lot of harm done in speculating how and or will the season finish or even in hoping that it will.

Some have mentioned it already, but I will repeat it.
the Bundesliga would complete the season even if they cant start to play before June.
La Liga eyes the middle of May as a possible restart day. In Germany the clubs need the tv money from this season, hence they will try to complete the season. But they are not expecting any spectators in 2020.

& what happens if - as expected - the virus returns in Autumn or winter which results in next season getting voided too ? Could you imagine the mother of all shitstorms that would hit the footballing authorities from those clubs who lost out as a result of cancelling this season. There is no timescale on when football will restart for the simple reason we don't know when this pandemic will pass. You can't cancel a season that's three-quarters of the way through just to start a new one in the 'hope' that this virus will fade away. Club lawyers would have a field day.

DMC answered for me. Much obliged.

Ask Belarus.

Australia still haven't postponed their season yet despite more cases there.

Will actually be interested to see how Bundesliga decide on things in next few months given Germany is least hit of the major leagues as we speak. Think premier league will take their lead from what they do.

Yeah that's partly my feeling aswell for not wanting the season cancelled.

You decide straight away to void this one....and then next one after 9/10 games quickly goes the same way once winter hits and no chance you could reschedule that especially as would be in full lockdown again.

So you needlessly lose two seasons and can't play anything when we finally get in a position to be allowed to play live sport (believe it or not but it will probably happen in next 12 months).

Much more logical to have this season still in hand if a two month window eventually presents itself in some form.

I'm not talking about being concerned about football, I've made posts here regarding United and the possible future, I am asking if other countries are as obssessed as our media and would be champions are when it comes to finishing this season at all costs.

Some have mentioned it already, but I will repeat it.

La Liga must be crazy given the state their country is in, and I get the whole clubs need money from tV deals stuff, but surely there is some logic that has to come into play, this thing is getting worse, not better, look at the re-spike in Asia after they thought they could just go back to business as usual.

If the idea is to play games behind closed doors and televise them then that's ludicrous, for starters all of the players and staff are in danger as the clubs have to train before they play, so much close contact in large numbers any time within the next six months is needlessly risky, and then you can add to the fact that football fans are by and large stupid and selfish, just look at the PSG/Drotmund game a few weeks ago, it was played behind closed doors but the stadium was surrounded by thousands of fans setting fireworks off, same is going to happen if any of these games go ahead, especially for any club with something to play for, and that inclcludes my own club who have plenty left to play for.

Belarus?

Bundesliga shouldn't be an influence to anything, the football governing body as a whole should come to a unanimous desicion, it's pointless one league finishing and others can't, which is almost certain to be the case as this thing spreads.

People on all sides need to get real. This is how things will play out.

1) If you can get football up and running by May then you complete the season go through to the end of June/early July. End of season, restart everything by late Sept/Oct.

If that does not work, then it will be;

2) Void and we go again at some point between Aug-Oct.

People talking about cutting 2020/21 any further than possibly the odd international round and the EFL Cup are not living in the real world. It is one thing to void a season with only 25% of it left when an epidemic breaks out, another to cancel/reduce another season.

In order to save this season beyond May is going to require some or all of the following;

Cut the group stages of the CL and go to straight knock out.

Have no CL/EL qualifying

Reduce the 2020/21 league seasons

Cut the FA Cup in addition to the EFL Cup.

Ask players to play out 125% of football in 10 months then go straight into a Euros.

No way does a season that has been stopped 3 months+ get resurrected to then completely screw up following seasons. A void and goes again benefits of the majority and it will cause the less financial pain than significantly reducing the next.

The only reason we are having this discussion about saving this season is because clubs are hoping to save this years revenue. At no point do they try to save 25% to then screw themselves out of 50% a year later.

I wonder if and when football is being played again how many teams will be in tough economic position. Somewhere I hope that it will affect those abnormal prices for players and ticets and that football makes a turn towards working people once again.
When you see what, as exempel, players earn and compare to life-saving personal we should be ashamed. And it is shame that it needs something to happen for us to think about that.

Japan J League planning to restart on May 9th, will play with half capacity or less in early games.

Not going to link it to european leagues with the different situation but I do watch the odd game from that league at times on a Saturday morning so will be good to get a fix in May while europe remains ongoing. Hasn't the Cafe adopted a team from that league to follow aswell?
