Can you jump into this if you haven't played any of the previous games? Or would you be lost with the story, characters etc?

You can jump in easily. It is a new story as far as I have gathered in my 5 hours or so so far, and I did play Persona 4 which was perfectly good without having played 1, 2 and 3.

Each game is completely stand-alone, basically.

This is still the only game I've played on my PS4. I bought the console simply for this game. Worth it though.

I'm playing through this game rn, and I just can't find the words to describe how incredible this is, absolutely loving it, better than Horizon imo and PS4's game of the year for me, I never ever imagined it'd be this much fun.

After a few months of reflection I think it might be the best JRPG ever. It's that damn good.

My first time playing a Persona game. Was really enjoying it but didn't heed the warnings about time. In the first palace I got to the throne room with 2 days to spare...turns out that wasn't enough. Don't know if I can be bothered going back a week. Such a shame

This damn game is the reason I don't have a PS4 anymore. My girlfriend loves it so much she has commandeered my PlayStation and it now lives at her place.

Jrpgs tend to do that. You can't half-arse play them. :P
I would't know...I've not had a chance to play it yet! I was about 100 hours into a Skyrim run when my PlayStation disappeared! From what I could see though (peering over my girlfriend's shoulder) the game looked pretty amazing. I hope I get my PS back soon, I've been looking forward to playing it for a long time...

The main boss battle theme is brilliant!

The best thing about the game is it gets better and better as it goes along. Palaces get even more fun and quirky and you keep finding new places, people, things to do.

You're only about 25% in at 30 hours

It's a JRPG masterpiece imo.

Just picked this up on a whim and dived into it completely blind not having played a Persona game before.

Holy maracas it’s feckin amazing. How have I not played this earlier?!. So far it’s shitting over GOW, RDR2 or any other big game I’ve played in the last year or two.

It's JRPG perfection.

I keep meaning to give it another playthrough in NG+ but I find it hard to commit to 100 hour games these days, second time round at least.

It's the best JRPG I've played in my life, if you have the chance to play Persona 3 and Persona 4 you should play it. You can see how Atlus managed to improve their game on each installment. Now I'm curious what can they do for Persona 6. I kinda wish the next game will have older protagonist.

Persona 3 was the reason I got back into gaming after my PS2 was covered in dust

My feeling exactly

I finished Persona 3 and 4 twice but I just can't find the time to play Persona 5 NG+ after having a job, I just wish that my memory of this game is forgotten so I can play it fresh for one more time, it's that good. It's definitely my favorite JRPG of all time

I don't think I've played a JRPG or enjoyed a turn based combat game, other than the FF on the PS2 and even that I didn't finish.

But I decided to give persona 5 a shot and I'm absolutely loving it. It's not very heavy on gameplay / control over your character but 20 hours in, it's been a really fun experience. Not able to give it much time - around half an hour or so a day - but it's working out fine. Got a really charming tone as well. And the design element is absolutely fantastic.

I'm tempted to get Persona 5 Royal now even though I've fully completed the original. Good excuse to get back into playing it since it's been a while!

Yeah I'll probably get it in the new year, even though I think it should be a DLC and not a fully paid for game, but whatever, it's still 100+ hours long. Supposedly they've improved the early pacing of the game which was its biggest flaws for me.

Yeah I've heard that the main game has been changed a bit anyway so at least it'll be a bit of a new experience. I'll probably get it around the same time, far too many games in my backlog to even think about starting a new 100+ hour game.

I didn't manage to finish this. Enjoyed it a lot, but when I had to do yet another dungeon (the floating castle or boat or smth?) I suddenly couldn't take it anymore and gave up. Think I was almost at the end too, but now it's been too long to go back.

It’s easily the best game I’ve played in recent years. Doesn’t do anything particularly new or groundbreaking but what it does, it does amazingly well.

Quickest 100 hours I’ve spent on a game. Even convinced me to buy a PS vita just to play persona 4 golden.

A great game. Wish I could have Managed my in game time a bit better to get closer to the platinum.

It’s more a remaster, than a DLC, no?

The social links are changed - e.g. Makoto has different events during her dates; there is a third semester at school; there is a new playable character to add to the party etc.

Wish it was out in the UK now, though. April(?) is when it releases here, and that’s when all the other good stuff finally decides to come out.

The musical score in the game is brilliant. This song is by far the best, in my opinion:

Screen Rant said:
Is Persona 5 Royal enough to justify purchasing a game fans have already played? Yes. The amount of change brought to the title is significant, and it all feels like a marked improvement. For a game that was already one of the best JRPGs in recent years, Persona 5 Royal is a follow-up that cements itself as an experience well-worth repeating in lieu of a proper Persona sequel.
Persona 5 revalidates its crown with the Royal edition. Almost 40 hours of new content, changes to the entire game, new plot, new semester and new characters. A true masterpiece.

It's definitely not for everyone.

I've never been a fan of turned based combat and have mostly steered clear of games /RPGs that have that system but Persona 5 was one rare such game that I decided to give a go, and actually really liked. The story was entertaining, the game was stylistically excellent and even the combat kept me interested enough too.

HOWEVER, the game is too frickin long. I was about 70 odd hours in and had apparently only finished half the palaces so gave up on it. There's no way the game was diverse and brilliant enough to keep me hooked for another 40-60 hours. In fact by that time I had already dragged my feet for around 15 or so hours. I understand it's meant for people who like this franchise so much they've previously played this sort of game 4 times already. But that wasn't me. For me this sort of game needs to be shorter and snappier.

How long did you play it for? The first 20 hours are indeed slow and dialogue heavy but after the second palace it gets much better.
For me that's not the really the sign of the good game. The whole it gets better after 20 hours is really just a sign of how flawed the game is.

Am toying with the idea of getting the new Royal edition. I beat the first one and it was simply one of the best games I've played, but it was such an emotional rollercoaster and mental drain by the end I just don't know whether I could do it again, just thinking of the time I committed to this makes me feel exhausted. The game was for me 10 hours too long, and it wasn't quite as fun in the last stint plus I admit I only managed to get to do the final stages because I cheesed the reaper and I'm sure they have removed it this time.

Ah Persona 5, First game to nearly break me. If Ireland goes into lockdown I’ll probably buy it. Though the thought of having to do another game of it will kill me. I already feel dread just thinking about it. 100 full non stop hours, never played anything like.

I'm trying to get into this again, but the endless dialouge is so exhausting. Maybe i'm just too old to get into this kind of story.

And the things is, it really isn't limited to the first 10-20 hours. You get locked into plenty more long stretches of little to no agency. There's a hopeless amount of exposition and dialogue repetition. I've never understood why this was rated so highly, the pacing and writing are poor in my opinion.

I just can't get into the story because it doesn't feel like i'm playing a game at all. Im just reading endless dialouge and watching cutscenes.
