He's absolutely right. If Hancock isn't a massive hypocrite, he will also call out Mike Ashley and Joe Lewis at the end of today's briefing for not doing their bit. Then Richard Branson, and every other billionaire who's abused the system to accumulate wealth & are now relying on the govt to protect it.

Agreed with Townsend, he makes valid points.

At the top level, ultimately a lot of these clubs have enough money to continue paying non-playing staff, so putting the burden on the players makes little sense as if the club can afford to pay the wages, what are they taking pay cuts for? So the club has a bigger transfer budget?

Ultimately they can do whatever they like with their money and as seen publicly plenty of players are making contributions and I'm sure many more are privately.

We live in a broken, fecked up system to which rank inequality is structurally integral. Footballers should not be held responsible for this state of affairs, and Hancock should have more useful things to say at a time like this.

It doesn't excuse footballers from the moral imperative to make some sacrifices, that said. There is no evil council of rich men chuckling away in a room organising global poverty and inequality. It's the responsibility of everyone who benefits to do whatever they can to change the system and meanwhile to ameliorate its effects from within.

:lol::lol: Ffs pack it up, thread done!

That said I’m in agreement, and have been saying the same thing forever. They are the group that society likes to come after regarding their earnings more than anyone else, while hypocritically spending all their free time absorbed in football.

Rich working class kids will always be an easy distraction for a Tory government though.

It shouldn’t be on the players to do anything. It’s on the clubs.

Don’t furlough non playing staff until something has been agreed with the playing staff.

Wonder if those in the government, your parliament and other shitholes have already played their part and taken a paycut.

Its laughably predictable that players wages are immediatley brought up during this crisis.
I assume all recipients of 50k plus a week through out the country will contribute?

Or asked the billionaire donors to their party to contribute some of their huge wealth to the cause.

There is enough to be cross about with football and footballers without having to resort to the tacky manipulations of Tory politician cnuts, looking to cloak their own colossal failings.

Virgin who are taking funds have a boss who doesn't even pay tax.
I am always very uncomfortable trying to shame people into parting with their money, and even I am surprised why it's always footballers bearing the brunt.

They're a rich working-class, and public figures, so it makes sense for them to be big targets.

If they weren't rich or weren't working class, I assume they'd be targeted less.

totally agree with Townsend, when are we going to look at people who've accumulated massive wealth through inheritance like Harry and William Windsor, how much are they giving?

The type of donations that many footballers will make over the coming weeks of their own back, on top of whatever the coordinated response may be.

Helping or not football players pay huge taxes, so people like Hancock can stay relevant and looks like this pandemic unintentionally exposing political ineptitude.

A point Townsend rightly brings up:

"We received an email two days ago from the PFA which said until they have all the information from clubs, not to be pressured into agreeing anything. What that means is until clubs have shown them financial details, until they know whether clubs can continue to pay non-playing staff, to not agree anything. If the players end up agreeing to a pay cut or deferral and a few days later the PFA find out that these clubs can continue to pay non-playing staff and are choosing not to, then who benefits?"

Hancock was asked a question in a press conference & answered it. What was supposed to do just ignore it. What he said about footballers was correct.

If the players do take a pay cut, where do people think that money is going to go? Straight to the local NHS? No, it will most likely end up in one of the owner's offshore accounts where it will stay. This was always the flaw in the furlough plan - plenty of employers don't need it but will happily take a taxpayer funded opportunity to stop paying emloyees whilst business is quiet.

The PFA should follow our lead and suggest a 30% donation to medical charities for all players.

I wonder if claims like Spurs/Levy influenced his view. (Levy "we're poor, we can't pay the staff, we've got hardly any Brie left")

It's invariably a response to a question and it's always the answer that gets the headline. Reporters over the last couple of weeks have been shite.... recent daily briefings seem to have turned into a chance for idiots like Know-it-all Peston or Useless Kuessenbergenbergen to ask loaded questions to create a headline

(He could have added "and others" too though)

I love how ultra rich clubs that spend millions on the stadium and millions in transfer money are in dire need to fire people with just 2 weeks of no football. I guess the clubs would fold, if this continues till June, unless of course players forego all their salaries.

It's not a zero sum game, why is it being painted as players vs. owners vs. politicians?

I don't think the players, or anyone, should be required to cut/donate their wages, but this is a group of people with the power to do some real good for a mass of scared individuals in a real scary time and anyone who fits in that bracket should, if they're not the Grinch, feel some sort of moral imperative to do what good they can. Isn't that just what it means to be a decent human being who's a part of a society/community?

You do know he didn't single out or target footballers right? He just answered a question specifically about Premier league footballers that was asked by a journalist.

They bloody well should donate a chunk of their salaries. They’re on massive salaries and they’re currently doing f**k all.

Why? It's their own money end of the day. They can do what they like with it. Alot of them will actually pay all their taxes and stuff and do enough for charity already. It's not their fault the club's gave them mega contracts.

Wtf can a footballer actually do apart from donate what they want? It's the production of equipment which is slowing things down, it's them not being able to find a vaccine. You think Harry Maguire is gonna build his own lab and find a cure? Grow up.

Everyone: "throw money at it for feck all"

How about we just take a chunk of your wages and throw it down the shitter? Half the time you can't even guarantee the money being donated is being spent wisely, we all know if a mask costs 20p to buy the government will pay 50p to buy it.

Don't know how some of these precious darlings would have coped back in the day when the players/staff had a significant drop in wages between seasons.

Let's be honest 75% of Premier League players would be able to go a year without being paid and not really notice the difference, though their wives/partners may, so the suggested 30% considering the current situation is more than fair.

It isn't the footballers fault that their clubs have furloughed people before asking the players to take a wage cut. It also is hypocritical for any politician, especially a Tory one, to comment on people not taking a pay cut. Their history of looki g after the rich whilst taking from the poor isn't exactly pristine is it? Hypocritical cnut telling anyone they have to take a pay cut whilst he sits in his ivory tower getting paid by the taxes of the state's citizens. Why dont politicians come out and say they are furloughing themselves because they cant do their jobs as politicians? Sanctimonious wankers!
