You should try the Angel Gomes thread,
The young man has only ever shone at u18 level or in division two reserve level and yet he gets more positive reviews than Daniel James who has to be the buy of the season,
Unbelievable!
Since you've gone off topic to have a pop at an unrelated player, he also captained England U17s to their first ever world cup win, a key player in a team also including Jadon Sancho, Phil Foden, Calum Hudson-Odoi, Rhian Brewster and others.

He was a substitute in most of the games at that world cup, if memory serves correctly he only started once or twice, he wasn't exactly the catalyst for the trophy.

Have not read anything lately but as soon as the media want to drive the Pogba transfer again once the Sancho thing has been exhausted from every angle then I am sure Savic will come into the picture again.
A question for those who have watched Serie A this season;
Has he been a big influence on Lazio this season and is he becoming a better player as he gets older even though he is still a young man?
I believe he just signed a new contract last summer. Lazio also was doing very well this season and they are in the title challenger race which indicate his performance as well for his team. These two factor will make his fees even higher than the previous one.

That's why we haven't heard much about us targeting him. Ironically, last summer it seems Lazio fans were confident they were going to lose him, but now, it's not the case anymore.

Nothing I've seen on highlights, or during the last world cup impresses me to be honest, Matic looked a far better player in the Serbian team. Just cannot see this happening.
If you reviewed Rooney based on his world cup performances he would be midtable at best. Not saying sergej is rooney level by the way

No need, we have McTominay
Our midfield depth is horrible, it's the main reason we were crap for a long time. Sergej Milinkovic-savic is now proving that he is good whilst playing deep. He first showed a lot of potential playing a bit higher. This means he can also fill in for Bruno if needed

I agree, we lack quality (DM). IF SMS can turn to a kind of Xabi Alonso then he'll be exactly what the team need.

Savic Sancho Grealish would be the perfect summer but given current circumstances I doubt we will sign 3 so Savic and Sancho are a must this year IF Pogba leaves if he dosent just get Sancho

Must have read Red Cafe that all of sudden a day after this thread was bumped we got the news.
I think its more down to Ole's response regarding exploiting the crisis to get his targets on the cheap. Italy and Spain were the most hit by the pandemic. Mid sized/small sized clubs like Lazio will be desperate to balance the books especially considering whose their owner is. Honestly I can see United switching targets now to a more foreign based transfer strategy.

Great stuff, instead of paying 200mil for a player, we will pay 100mil, get in!

I don't think SMS was ever rated 200m. Anyway lazio's owner lolito is known as litirchio. Tirchio means miser. He makes Levy looks like a spendthrift. With his urgency to quickly balance the book we might get SMS on a realistic fee

How would you fit them all into the team?

This. After seeing Matic thoroughly outshine him at the World Cup where he was supposed to show his worth, I lost interest. Might as well develop McT. But if/when Pogba leaves, not a bad shout if he'll cost half the money we get for Pogba. No more...

He was the stand-out player in the first game.

That’s not the first time someone has cited McTominay specifically when scoffing at the prospect of signing Milinkovic-Savic. Why him, particularly? McTominay is a bit of a workhorse where as Milinkovic-Savic is a bit of a baller - I’m not sure I see the link?

I think we were interested in SMS mostly under Mourinho. I m not convinced right now we re looking at someone with the attributes of SMS - we re looking at players which are more dynamic

I think it s more like Lazio are using us to ramp up the price.

People shouldn't put much stock in the world cup performances. I'm Serbian and our national team is a joke.

Keep in mind that Matic has played for Serbia for years. Sergej's appearances in the world cup were the first ever official games he played for Serbia so he deserves slack. Also he was by far our best player in the first game, setting up Mitrovic with two 1 on 1 chances. He scores those and the narrative would change with Sergej getting 2 assists.

He's definitely a very talented player. At the same time he is not worth 100 million.

But world cup performances shouldn't be used to judge players. Bruno Fernandes looked extremely average for Portugal, and it made me think he hadn't improved much from his Serie A days where he was fairly average too.

€120-150m? Yeah, sure thing.

He'll go for €60-80m tops when he leaves Lazio, we're struggling for €100m for Pogba - I'm not a huge fan of Pogba (more his agent) but he is 10x the player SMS is.

To be exact
in the group stages he started on the bench twice (played 23 mis against Chilie and 44 mins against Mexico)
He started the last group game as captain and was subbed off around 67 mins

He started the first knock out game against Japan as captain and was subbed off at around 64 mins again

He was an unused sub for the quarters against USA

He was an unused sub for the semis against brazil

He was brough on in the 90th min of the final

Basically he played less than 1/3rd of the minutes - of course he was part of the squad but i think its a stretch to make out he was a key player

Was injured just before the finals I believe, in qualifying he was the main man and captain for a reason.

yeah except thats not true
UEFA gets 6 spots for the U17 world cup - they give them to the 4 semifialists from the U17 european championships (and 2 of the 1/4 finalists)... i.e. the qualifying competition for the U17 world cup is the European U17 tournament
England lost the U17 euros on penalties to Spain
They won their three group games
beat Ireland and Turkey en route to the final
The team of the tournament included Guehi, Panzo, Mceachran, Hudson-Odi, Foden and Sancho (who also won best player at the tournament and was englands top scorer)
It didnt include Gomez because he didnt make the squad (due to injury)

Oh and as for the qualification to the U17 Euros

England played 6 games
Gomez started one game (taken off after 65 mins against azerbjan)
and was an unused sub against Austria
wasnt involved in the other 4

so yeah - simply not true

Ah OK must be getting it mixed up little, knew he was injured for one of them.

It makes you think though why he's captain? they do play lots of matches so he was clearly a big part for them, was just unlucky when it got to tournaments.

This is the Milinkovic-Savic thread and not the appropriate place to have this discussion. I already moved it to Gomes thread with this post, which should hopefully also serve as my rebuttal of your interpretation. Yes, his involvement was limited by injury but you can't argue with a goal or assist every 33 minutes, the best rate in the team by some distance.

Manchester United dreams of forming a Pogba-Fernandes-Milinkovic-Savic midfielder!

This is not happening. Contract renewal time or they're trying to flog him. We've got other urgent needs and he's overpriced.

Not this guy again. Let Lazio know we do not want him. :nono:

Only interest I have heard for him was PSG and even that sounded made up.

A great and refreshingly different player. Not a holding player at all and not suitable for us though.
