2010's? Marcelo. Overall though easily Alves for me. Alves was also quality for Sevilla if I recall correctly.

By the way, time fecking flies. Was wondering what year Alves joined Barca and it's 2008. Which is 12 fecking years ago.

Marcelo. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a full-back have the the kind of influence Marcelo did in Real’s route to their CL success in both 2017 & 2018.

He was simply imperious against Bayern at home in 2017; was the best player on the pitch against PSG at home in 2018 (no mean feat with the likes of Neymar, Mbappe, C.Ronaldo, Modric, Ramos, etc playing) and was critical in almost all of Real’s games from there on after with a pivotal goal or assist in each round up to and including the final. He was consistently in Real’s top 3 attacking players and from FB too. Generally, one of the most talented and imaginative players I’ve ever seen with a football at his feet.

Alves. Hes a cheating cretin and was undoubtedly doped up to the eyeballs under Pep but he was absolutely integral to one of the greatest teams the game has ever seen. Simply put, Messi would not have been as good without him.

Alves.

Marcelo might be the best of all time going forward, but Alves was one of one of the greatest two-way flank dominators. He was less of a liability when forced to defend because he was robust 1v1 and had more reliable concentration.

Spot on.

And even then I'm not totally sure Marcelo is better than Alves going forward anyway although I can see the case for it.

How blessed were Brazil by the way?

Going from Roberto Carlos and Cafu to Alves and Marcelo.

Alves and comfortably so.

Was as good going forward while being comfortably better defensively.

And Maicon

I don’t know the overall opinion of his career with Brazil but the Brazilians I knew really didn’t like Alves in the team.

Prime Maicon was preferred to Dani Alves for Brazil. I remember the latter being deployed in midfield during the 2010 WC in some games (most notably against Netherlands) while Maicon occupied the FB spot.

Marcelo was getting benched by Coentrao in 2013/14 and was benched by Reguillon in 2018/19... had a great peak in the 4 seasons inbetween, he was better than Alves ever was for large periods of those 4 years but he wasn't an elite player for that long. Dani Alves' longevity as a top player was a lot longer and their international careers for Brazil are miles apart with Marcelo never being able to stand out like he did with Madrid.

Is the only correct answer.

I don’t disagree on the outcome, but there’s absolutely no comfortable distance between them - it’s like 91 and 89 if we’re using gaming parameters. Both were sublime, both changed the roles of wing-backs. Marcelo had technique most wingers could dream of, both are kind of crazy with winning mentality to boot. At 0-1 in the 89th minute, these guys kept calm and knew a chance was always going to come from sustained pressure.

Alves is comfortably the better fullback but that makes it all the more impressive that Marcelo is by far my favourite of the two.

Marcelo has that Ronaldinho type entertainment factor (not in ability obviously but something about his style and attacking desire makes it a joy to watch him.)

And you can see he’s enjoying every second of the game, would have absolutely loved him here as a United player.

Marcelo can win a knockout CL tie by himself, but Dani Alves has more longevity. Marcelo is far worse defensively but in that Real Madrid context he really was the difference maker in attack which is rare for a full back. As a Brazil fan I dislike both, but I understand their legendary status in european club football.

Alves most definitely, has also had a better career with Brazil given his performances in the latest Copa America.

Plus, taking away his amazing Barca performances, he also went to the final with Juve after leaving Barca.

Marcelo a was great for a couple of seasons but besides that was being benched by Coentrao one season and lately hasn't been great as well.

Alves for me.

Ironic thing here is Alves never really got a good run at any world cup at his peak, 2006 he wasn't selected despite being fantastic for Sevilla. Was fantasic in the Copa America a year later, scored in the final.

2010 Maicon was infront of him as a starter although of course he'd just won the treble at Inter and played a key part.

2014 he was a starter but fell out of favour once tournament hit the knock outs. Unused sub for the 1-7.

Missed 2018 tournament through injury.

Why didn't it work out for either in the national team? Think Marcelo fell out with a few coaches didn't he? Tite left him out of the copa just last summer.

Alves by a country mile.

Marcelo was a decent foil for Ronaldo but he wasn't great defensively.

Honestly Alves worked out. He was key in 2 copa america titles (07 and 19). Although he was used as winger in the first title.

People forget he was not present vs Germany and he missed out on '18 due to injury.

Marcelo is another story. He had attrocious games all throughout his stint, and Tite bottled it when he took off Filipe Luis to put Marcelo back in after he recovered from the shits he got vs Serbia, while Filipe provided great performance vs Serbia and Mexico. And then Belgium made their whole game plan around attacking him. And we kept him as head of our NT..

I would go for Alves for consistency, longevity and being better defensively but Marcelo played as big a role as anyone in Real Madrid's champions league successes from 2014. So, its a difficult choice in truth.

Alves was insane for a long perioid of time.
Same with Marcelo, just not for that long

Maicons top level was better than both though, but lasted maybe just two seasons

Weren't they just.. Throw Maicon in there, too and then you probably have a host of prime Rafael calibre of players who would comfortably start for most NT sides.

Why is this even a poll or debate? Surely it'll be Alves. No brainer decision if you have been following both of their career since 2010.

Alves is the best right back in his generation, Marcelo isn't even the best left back in his generation and he had some off season. I expect no one vote for Marcelo honestly.

Alves is that good he can also play in midfield. Longevity, offers lot of things as a full back & great contribution in the winning teams.

Alves but that's unfair to Marcelo as he'd probably be preferred to almost any full back of the last decade other then Alves.

Depends on what you are looking for.

If you are looking for individual ability purely - Marcelo by miles. Best only after Carlos.

If you are looking for impact on a system/team - Alves without a question of doubt. Among the top 5 most important players of that Barcelona team for me. While Marcelo had great impact on the Madrid team as well, Alves was another level.
