Loved it at the time but the pace of movies had increased hugely since then.
Generally speaking, I don't mind the slow pace if the dialogue is interesting. I've watched plenty of 70s movies and enjoyed them. But Papillon didn't do it for me.

The book is great, and as is often the case with these things superior to the movie.

I didn't make the connection until I read about it afterwards and realised that I knew who Tate already was. I thought Polanski was going to be the important one of the couple based on the fact that he's an arsehole. It's not exactly general knowledge to be honest. Not being a dick but there's more impressive cults than a bunch of hippies who cut their foreheads and the whole angle comes across as too Hollywood centric - liking their own proverbial ring pieces. I also didn't realise that Charles Manson appears near the start of the film.

The dumb thing is that nothing I'm posting is a spoiler for anyone who hasn't seen it, like you said it's required knowledge to enjoy the film in its entirety.

I also don't like seeing dogs with cropped ears. Especially staffies, because it's just not needed.

Not liking a film because you are ignorant about the subject matter....mmkay yeah...I mean it's only perhaps one of the most famous crimes of the 20th century. I wouldn't be admitting to not having the basic knowledge to be able to enjoy a Tarantino film.

The Godfather 2: Boooring, and it was really mean of Michael what he did to Fredo
The Shawshank Redemption: Pfff, nice guy locked up and becoming mates with his fellow prisoners, laaame.
Citizen Kane: It's not even in color, who am I supposed to enjoy a movie that's all black and white.
The Dark Knight: It's so fecking obvious Bruce Wayne is Batman. Come on. Also, why did he swallow a speech distortion device.
The Original Star Wars Trilogy: Luke Skywalker is such a whiner and the duel between Anakin in Obi Wan in Revenge of the Sith had way more backflips than the one in A New Hope.

On the other hand, all movies with Dwayne The Rock Johnson are massively underrated. Fast and Furious: Hobbs and Shaw is the greatest movie of all time. It has lots of banter, a hot chick and like, 5 explosions per minute.

Not sure what how well rated this film is with everyone else but me and the other half thought Blade Runner 2049 was terrible. I actually nodded off a couple of times in the cinema. I survive on little sleep but that was the only time I’ve ever nodded off during a film at the cinema. Googled the reviews when I came out and it seemed we were in the minority. I should maybe rewatch to see if it’s any better this time.
No you're absolutely right. The movie was well below average.

I didn't say I didn't like the film - it's Tarantino ffs. I'm sure if the film had a character called Thomas Hamilton in it you'd need to Google the name and where I'm from that name is infinitely more well known. My point is that had I known about it I would have probably enjoyed it more, and that's on me and nothing to do with a fault on the movie itself. Calm down Grinner, away and have a nap because I know you're getting grumpy in your old age.

I mean, murdering psychopaths are not generally something I take much time to learn about. I'm more interested in music history and how many Haribos I can shove in my gob.

Hmm, I actually came up with a genuine entry; the revenant.

It's shot beautifully, but in the end it's just a very long compilation of Leo being in pain / cold / uncomfortable / constipated / falling of a cliff.

I think he's made movies where he deserved an Oscar more.

Hated it. That and There Will Be Blood can feck off as far as I'm concerned.

I couldn't finish either.

Also Interstellar, one of the worst supposed-to-be-good films I've sat through in a long time.

I'll happily watch tripe on Syfy knowing it's tripe.

I was shocked at a the time, everyone I asked in real life thought it was good.

I remember leaving the cinema after having watched Black Panther, thinking that it was probably the most overrated movie in my lifetime. It’s got 97% on Rotten Tomatoes but was really a very ordinary action movie.

Oh, and I agree with those mentioning Once upon a Time in Hollywood.

People saying The Big Lebowski is overrated should be on the international list of terrorist organizations.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy - They are just a shit version of Willow that rip the arse out of the run time.
Ungh. I can appreciate Any Oscars it won for CGI, Score, Costume etc (I assume it won many)

But taking an exciting book and turning it into 9-12 hours of shite should not be celebrated.

How The Hobbit isn’t just ridiculed for the abject cash grab that it clearly is, is beyond me.

Hmmmmm. I can see why people hated it. Some of my closest friends did and we generally like much of the same stuff

But I have it in my top 10 right now. It felt like a movie you got to live in for 2-3 hours. Funny. Unpredictable. Achingly cool.

I think the things with Tarantino is, you have to like his type of movie. I know some people that absolutely hate everything Tarantino, which I kind of understand, since they have a very particular brand. I'm personally of the same opinion as you, you really get to live in the movie and for me the 3 hours really flew by.

The ending was obviously rather different and maybe a little divisive, but I thought it was hilarious.

I'm in the strange position of thinking that Tarantino & his work are completely overrated, while actually liking some of his films.
Maybe my problem is not so much with him or his movies, but the culture of hype we have now.

Agreed.

“Just because you didn’t like it, doesn’t make it bad”
“Just because you loved it, doesn’t make it good”

He is objectively good at many things, but many of his movies are love/loathe.

I hate The Beatles, Radiohead, U2, The National, but I’d never try to suggest they were bad. I just don’t like them. Ed Sheeran on the other hand.......

A lot of his stuff is "cool", and he's good at recycling other people's stuff in a way that makes it look original - which is not a slight on him, I actually think he understands the medium of cinema much better than a lot of directors. I just don't think there's that much "special" about him, I find that a lot of other active directors have a much more unique brand of cinema than his (Lynch, Malick, both Andersons, Cronenberg, Von Trier, Fincher, Soderbergh... off the top of my head). But this recycling approach works super well if you buy into the references, but it's pretty hollow overall otherwise.

I agree. I think some of his stuff is decent, but the obsession with being "cool" and putting feet on screen at every point is off putting. Plus the whole "The 8th film by Quentin Tarantino" marketing schtick kind of implies your going to get something amazing. When you're going to get characters that all talk kind of the same and a man indulging himself for several hours.

Any Harry Potter, Lord of the rings/Hobbit film.

Daughter loves them all so I've watched them with her over the years but other than some effects (and even those have dated), didn't rate one. Average acting, too long... I liked the Orcs though.
I loved the Lotr trilogy, havent seen the Hobbit and thought Harry Potter was a load of crap. I seriously hate everything about it.

I like Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds. The rest from Tarantino is visually great, but absolutely boring. Jackie Brown for example is a pure waste of time.
Agree with everyone who mentioned Interstellar. Everything that comes after Anne Hathaway's monologue about love, is an insult to the viewer. Same with Memento. Horrible ending. Don't like Nolan at all, except for Batman. Even though those are also overrated.

The thing about Nolan is that he has 2 glaring weaknesses: bad dialogues and forcibly trying to make things seem grander than they are(often through bad dialogue).

That is why I think Dunkirk is his best movie(keep in mind that I haven't seen Memento since I was a teenager). Dunkirk proves that Nolan nails visual storytelling if he wants to. I also love how we never really see the Germans but always feel their presence.

I agree with your sentiment, but not about Dunkirk. That movie was so strange. I didn't understand so many editorial decisions there. The strangest one was the torpedo scene. He completely ruined any element of surprise by suddenly showing the boat from the outside and allowing us to see the torpedo hit. Made no sense to me. I didn't care about a single character in that movie, too.

I really enjoyed Memento but watched it over a decade ago so my memory is a bit blurry. What didn’t you like about the ending?

Agree about LOTR and Harry Potter films being overhyped and overrated. Minions too. Shite - even my nephews were bored shitless. Avatar, overhyped and boring.
