The Lighthouse is one of my films of the year. Very atmospheric, eccentric, disturbing and comical.
Great direction and cinematography.

Quite annoyed I missed Portrait of a Lady on Fire in cinemas because that's looks great too.

I love how this thread is so much shorter than the opposite one:lol: Anyways, I'm gonna apply the same logic here. All of the movies below are considered good by most metrics, but I still think they deserve more acclaim:

Porco Rosso
This is my favorite Ghibli film. Cool setting, visually beautiful, great main character, great humor and surprisingly deep. Most people have Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke or Grave Of The Fireflies as their favorite Ghibli films, and they are not wrong. Those 3 are probably the best Ghibli films and I love all of them. But Porco Rosso is also great, and I'm surprised it's not talked about more often.

Millennium Actress
My favorite film from my favorite director. It's not nearly as famous as Paprika and Perfect Blue, which are both excellent films. More people need to see this film!

Django Unchained
People supposedly like this movie, but it's rarely brought up as one of Tarantino's best, which I think it is. In my opinion, it's the most entertaining and rewatchable Tarantino film.

127 Hours
This will probably be my most controversial pick. I think it's very entertaining and surprisingly well written and edited. The plot makes it sound like it's not going to be a very interesting film, but I was very positively surprised.

Have you seen The Witch? Same writer and director than The Lighthouse. I'm going to watch it tonight! Hope it's good!

A Good Year - quirky Ridley Scott romcom(?) with a surprisingly good cast. Archie Panjabi and Marion Cotillard just brilliant!

Hunt for Red October - enjoyed reading Clancy’s books but this is my favourite movie from them. Baldwin was my favourite choice of Jack Ryan too before they tried to go all blockbuster and get the likes of Ford and Affleck as leads. Captured the drama very well and Connery as a Russian sub captain

Porco Rosso is a brilliant film but I wouldn't class it as underrated.
I think the most underrated/underviewed Ghibli film is Only Yesterday. A really nice coming of age film.

Going by the other thread:
The Big Lebowski
Pulp Fiction
Lord of the Rings trilogy

Oh, and Inception which is not so much under-rated but mis-classified as a war crime.

It was groundbreaking when it came out but it's a bit of a "so what?" now.

We share the same taste in movies!

Those are per chance my Top 3 of all time (Return of the King at 3). #4 is Fight Club, then Shawshank Redemption and at #6 is Inception.

I was just pointing out films consistently turning up in the over-rated thread: and especially the really weird Inception thing.

I love Big Lebowski but I'd have ROTK as the worst of the three LOTR movies.

Based on pure entertainment, I'd go with Kill Bill 1.
I'm not a fan of the Kill Bill movies. They feel Tarantino parodies, which I can only surmise means that Tarantino got too cocky from the successful 90's and starting throwing everything that fascinates him onto the screen, thinking that everyone else naturally would like it too.

Still way better than most of blockbusters, though!

A good deed ripples through several lives.

very uplifting film.
 Aye, a necro bump here, but also was taken a bit by surprise when randomly watching that movie when I was younger.

Also "Birdy", one of the first movies with Nicolas Cage (and Matthew Modine). A Lot of people will probably find Cage uninspiring now, but I remember it as a great movie (last seen it 15 years ago, should probably give it a rewatch)

I thought Lighthouse was a bit overrated by the art-house audience. I much preferred The VVitch.

Underrated films for me:
Mean Creek
Dead Man's Shoes
A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints
Shutter (Thai version)
Cache

I read somewhere that Tarantino has always been drawn to Westerns and Kung-Fu movies. I'd argue Kill Bill and Django are rudimentary Tarantino. He made those for himself. And Kill Bill 1 had some kick-ass mojo as well. It sizzled with energy!

Criminally underrated. Tarantino may have only wrote it but for me it's the best "Tarantino" movie.
Also the cast couldn't get any better with so many cameos - Brad Pitt, Gary Oldman, Denis Hopper, Samuel Jackson, Val Kilmer, Christopher Walken... And a pre-Sopranos James Gandolfini to top it off.

Dredd.
If they've promoted it more they could have made loads more sequels. So many stories to pick from.
I hope the rumoured TV show turns up.

Arguably one of the best scenes in movie history between Hopper and Walken. Amazing.

Macbeth 2015

Received lukewarm reviews by almost everyone(A part from one 5 star review in the telegraph) and didn't do any big numbers at the box office BUT......it's up there with the very best big screen adaptations of Shakespeare. The play is striped down to the very basics, it even does away with the iconic ''Tomorrow and tomorrow'' speech to focus on themes such as child lost and mental illness. Fassbender performance as Macbeth suffering from PTSD is every bit as equal as the great Toshiba Mifune in Kurosawa epic Throne Of Blood, Cotillard gives possibly the best on screen Lady Macbeth ever and the supporting cast is well rounded. The film also includes one of great modern soundtracks and the cinematography is well

It's Game Of Thrones but not shit.

Great film. Now I have the soundtrack looping in my head.

Not sure about mainstream media but it got plenty of love in the horror circuit.

Watched it many years ago and thought it was one of the best films I'd ever seen at the time, and remember telling people so. Bit scared to watch it again in case it turns out it wasn't actually that good.

I mostly agree with the Tom Cruise ones. His work has been downgraded, at least in my imagination, since he went from Hollywood heartthrob to short lunatic Scientologist who can run. He still plays a good lunatic though, like in Magnolia or Tropic Thunder.

To be honest, I was tempted to laugh at the ending of Hereditary.

Agree with Collateral, my favourite Cruise performance and Foxx plays his character flawlessly as well. The film has a brilliant soundtrack and suits the more gritty than usual depiction of LA. Would recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it.
