Heartbreaking really. Imagine being slagged off by Nick Hancock and Sex Pest McGrath?

As bad as that was, the age of Twitter could have made things even worse. Chadwick would have received Lingard levels of abuse if he were around today.

I disagree. You can turn twitter off. The BBC used to roast him every week on a show that got millions of viewers. A 19 year old kid. It was so uncall for.

I couldn't read the article but I feel sympathise with him.

Did he say if anyone in the United team bullied him?

All jokes aside, I’m not generally a fan of over political correctness, but in cases like this it is good that such behaviour would never be tolerated today.

Those replies are all surprisingly nice, I thought it would be a load of scouse calling him all sorts.
They probably aren't following a minor squad player from a rival team 20+ years on in fairness!

The best comedians are the ones who can make people laugh and be wholesome at the same time. Not a big fan of the bullying type of comedy.

You can also turn the TV off. It's one of buttons on the remote.

Its more the target of the jokes, more than the jokes themselves. Dwight Yorke and David Beckham are sort of fair play. They're big names, they put themselves out there, they'll take whatever shit given to them. The likes of Jason Lee and Luke Chadwick are hardly such easy targets, its pathetic.

I feel like if you're in on the 'joke' yourself (him calling himself a journeyman) the twitter trolls lose all their ammunition.

You can walk around on your merry way knowing your parents are probably not going to see the abuse you get by some faceless people on social media. A massive difference when in the pre-twitter world you see famous comedians, who you are paying your TV license to slagging your son off for how he looks.

A similar interview for those who don't have access to the Athletic.

I didn't really think about all the Chadwick comments at the time, viewing them in much the same way as I would jokes about Phil Jones being an oaf or Ashley Cole being greedy. As soon as I saw Daniel Taylor mentioning that Chadwick interview it suddenly dawned on me that it must have been pretty horrible for a shy kid to start getting publicly mocked for being ugly, which you'd think would have been pretty fecking obvious to me at the time. It's too easy to fall into the trap of thinking different rules apply to footballers when it comes to the insults they take and that they're somehow immune to being cut down by it.

Would be nice to see Gary Lineker’s thoughts on this.

Looking back though I loved the show even though it was cruel at times.

He posted this on his LinkedIn last week.

If he says, it has affected him then it’s not up for debate.

People shouldn’t have to ‘turn off’ Twitter/the BBC to not get abused.

Good post. Totally agree.

It’s easy to tag along with the jokes and somehow not expect a footballer to care, or just not think of them the same as you would an everyday person.

I got the free trial to the athletic about a month ago. My initial plan was to cancel when its over, but I've been massively impressed by the writing, even in a period of time with no sport.

Good thing there was no Twitter during his time at the club. It is the definition of social media abuse.

Sometimes I don't understand why a player still posts something silly after being a target of abuse for playing like shit. Why open the app at all? it triggers people more. Can't be good for their mental health when They read comments. As anyone can write anything unfiltered. Usually the most disgusting comments will soon be deleted but who cares? if you've seen it once you already knew the intent of the writer.

And that is why they do a free trial.

What can you say? We people are horrendous at times. Just take a look in the Lingard thread...

Its weird that we always have to target someone, even when its our own players.

Yes it is, the media mock people relentlessly. There are numerous memes that go viral and even work their way into the media. There’s always been a need to point out perceived issues people have and take the piss out of them.

It's good that he opened up about this.

We need to realize that there are people whose feelings can get hurt easily. There's nothing wrong with that. Not everyone can "take it" even a genuine actual compliments but it sounds a bit like mocking or even friendly banters that borders near to the border of offensiveness. People perceive things differently (come on admit it, sometimes you tease with your mates in offensive ways but it won't be too offensive because the intent is fun and you know they can take it, then they will get you back with similar banters, it's enriching to the relationship, however sometimes it can get overboard so you stopped and apologized. Some people cannot do that and will get hurt or at least not before achieving high level of friendship or trustworthiness. And that's okay -- they do not need to change because that's who they are. At times, a fair sense of doing that is also used by people to break the ice, but some people *I hate to use the word "sensitive people" because that has negative connotations* may perceive it as threats. People are different and we should be aware of that, adjust our behaviors with and accept them.).

Of course, then there's the intentional bullying claimed to be pretentious jokes, harming that attacks undeserved aspects or appearance-features of other people. This shouldn't happened because it's never good nor have any good purposeful. Always harming with bad intentions.

Because of his looks i doubt it the world's changed a lot? Lingard's been abused because of the way he's been playing for almost 15 months - he's been absolute shit yet acted like some sort of a superstar. All his bullshit merchandise and promoting his clothing brand days before the Liverpool match. Not to mention his stupid tweets. He's 28 and acts like i did when i was 13. There's so much a fan can take when their team has been poor for years but to watch some prick exploiting his fanbase for $$$ because he plays for one of the most popular clubs in the world and showing almost nothing in return on the pitch. I'll never support that kinda shit. You have one job perform on the pitch the rest comes later.

It probably ruined his career. Being 19 years old and being called an ugly cnut on TV constantly by ABU presenters would destroy you. I don't know why he was singled out, when he just has the face of your average footballer.

I don't think it would happen on TV today.

Rooney was already a millionaire who had made it when they started calling him Shrek, but some players, the shy types, will crack easier than others.

There has been a shift in bullying from visual appearance to social appearance. As others have alluded to people like Chadwick, Dowie, Rooney etc. have all had their visual appearances mocked relentlessly by panel shows and comedians but I haven't heard a player be mocked for how they look for a while now in the same capacity. Without trying to make this another Pogba/Lingard thread there are hundreds of footballers who are rinsed nowadays for how they appear on social media with no real evidence behind it. As was shown with Kitson when he was having a go at Sterling - he does the exact same thing but certain footballers get targeted and bullied to the same extent, just differently. Thing is, people like Pogba and Sterling can handle it because they are top level players and have the mentality that is needed to drive them through negative patches but players like Chadwick clearly do not have the same mentality and it can deeply impact them. Very sad and I hope he's doing better now. I do also dislike the hypocrisy by the media though when speaking out about these kinds of stories and then revert to bullying someone the next week but c'est la vie.

Fully agree, unfortunately there are still many such so called comedians out there. Graham Norton made a career out of it on his original C4 show where he would phone somebody up and insult them on tv. Apparently it was comedy.

Online bullying is also rife and is widely practiced and accepted as being ok, you only need to open facebook and stroll through comments to see this. As for twitter, that's even worse. It really shouldnt be tolerated to the extent that it is.

That carry on by the BBC was absolutely disgraceful and a public apology while a bit late in the day should be issued.

Well ‘media’ is a very loose term, and anyone with a camera or even a phone is considered media today. No official media such as BBC could repeatedly take the mick out of someone’s face, unless the presenter was the player’s personal friend or something. They could get sued for a start.

People still call Rooney ugly, stupid, Shrek, etc. It's especially sad to see when a lot of our own fans do it.

The case with Lingard is totally different though, there can be no comparison. Lingard was given a lot of support throughout his development period and even became a fan favourite at one point - I mean, there was a Messi Lingod thread on the Caf at one point. The harsh criticism towards him is about his abysmal performances in the last 2 years and his behaviour as a senior first team player, who was touted to be one of the faces of the club due to being a youth product of our own academy.

If Lingard could choose to play like Pele, he would. It's out of his control that he's lost his form.

Of course you can.

Are you saying he's deliberately playing badly, and he can choose to play at a higher level any time?
He's regressed thats the point i'm trying to make. He reached his peak at 24-25 and now he can't play at the same level anymore. Happens a lot in football.
