Assuming the SSD's are the same size - and I think they will be - and the price difference is minimal due to the fact that a disk drive doesn't actually cost that much, why would you opt for the Digital Edition? Why cut yourself off from physical media. The price difference can't be a factor because that will just be offset by the fact that digital games are more expensive. And you can buy digital games on the disk version anyway, so you're getting the best of both worlds. Don't get it.
There are people who are into VR who are digital only, don't want to have to switch disks etc... Then there are some that have seen their buying habits shift to digital only over this past gen.
I'm with you I like the idea of being able to buy/borrow disks or sell them, not much of a collector. But then I have only sold around 5 disks, and lent out a couple maybe this gen? So it literally is just keeping open that option for cheaper physical disks, and ownership for me...

I don't think they're just going to deduct the drive price. Sony will see the digital edition as a massive profit-maker compared to the physical, as they'll get all the money from sales themselves, and can control the prices as they see fit, so I think it'll be around £100 cheaper.
I'm half tempted if it's around that figure, as with PS and Xbox, resale value of most games aren't that high (unlike Nintendo, where you can buy physical and sell it at maximum £5 loss after a few years), and if you're patient, you can always wait for inevitable sales that will occur.
Downside is having to download games from scratch (Rather than disk, which normally has a small download), and more HDD space being taken up.
I think, for me, it'll be the PS4 BC which decides it. As I didn't own a PS4, and want to play all the exclusives (Plus PS3 games on PSNow), if the digital one charges full price for the PS4 games, and the disk version allows you to insert PS4 games, I will definitely go for disk.
Yeah as had just been said. Why would somebody opt for the digital version over the disc version if the difference is only £50/€/$?
You're essentially forfeiting your right to play anything second hand for 50£\€. If you bought the disc version you'd probably save more than that over the consoles lifetime by being able to buy and sell second hand games.

Yeah, I'm with you on keeping my options open. I have a few digital games, but I mostly buy physical. That way if I don't like the game, I can just sell the thing. The digital console does look a lot nicer, but it certainly wouldn't persuade me to buy it over the disk version.

Even if it's a hundred-pound difference (which I don't think it will be, but who knows) I still wouldn't see the point. For me, it's just all about keeping your options open. Yeah, BC is the important issue for me. If they try and charge £30-£40 for games like GoW, Spiderman etc. digitally, why would I go for that, when I can get the PS4 discs for a fraction of that? Unless they decide to add all the big hitters from the previous gen to PSNow, acting as a similar output to what GamePass is, then the digital version might be better.
Also every gen, you hear of people who randomly/accidentally get banned and can't have their account brought back. Will you lose all your purchased games if that happens?!
Speaking personally I've seen my buying habits change over the last decade or so. I barely own a physical game on the PS4 and I certainly haven't bought on in the last 2-3 years or so. I guess I'm not all that interested in keeping my options open if I already know I'm never going to use it. I also didn't even bother to include a disc drive in my most recent gaming pc build and actually went for a case that doesn't even support it. I just don't see the necessity anymore so if I can buy a leaner machine then I'm all for it.
Fair enough. I'm all for digital games, btw. I own a few myself. I love the convenience of them. I like that you don't have to keep changing disks. I like that when you preorder a game you can play it at midnight on the release date. So I'm all for that. It's the idea of a completely digital console I find strange. But there again, if you really know that you aren't going to buy physical and you like the design of the Digital one, then I guess I can see it. Definitely not for me though.
It's the total norm to have no disk drive on pc's has been for years but i can go to different retailers with competitive prices to choose my games, consoles i can't.
Until Sony or Microsoft let other companies sell cdkeys etc digital will always be the worst choice for value on console.
The overwhelming majority of my purchases have been sales. As such I have no problem paying a full price on the rare occasions I really want a game at launch. In any case I simply don't want physical games anymore, I just don't want all that stuff lying around anymore.
I do know. It's the same thing I was doing on the original GBA right up until I stopped developing around the PS4 era via every single console in between. Compression techniques are very important, no matter if it's a new fantabulous SSD system or not.I mean it's great and all but it's not some new genius idea, it's merely using the new tech to better compress. RAD are usually among the best at it, which is why people use them but it's not some new amazing tech and all that, it's just next gen improvement.

Am I the only one who would take the digital version over the disk one? I've had two game disks already broken by folk in the house taking them out of the cabinet, leaving the box and disk lying about, and inevitably the toddler using them as a makeshift trampoline. Three of the last four games I've bought in the past year have been digital.
What about when you toddler pisses on the hard drive?

Personally I like having the physical copy of games, it's nice to stack the boxes on a shelf like a nerd. Also easier to remember what I have if I want to play a game again a few years later!
The main reason, though, is that it's much cheaper. TLOU2 is €70 on the PS Store, it was €55 for the physical copy, and if you don't like a game, CEX will probably take it off you for like €43 (that's what I got for that piece of shite Animal Crossing).
I can see the appeal of digital if you don't like clutter and just want your games downloaded and ready to go but, not for me, Jeff.

Yeah I admit that it sticks in the throat a little to pay extra for a version of the game that Sony could, with little reason to, prevent from working (those T&Cs are always a bastard) but, for example, there's a sale in the store at the moment where some stuff is half price. Bought TLOU2 the other night for £54.99 but bought Uncharted 4 and the remastered TLOU for a tenner each on the way to the checkout (to incidentally replace the two fecking disks that said previous toddler jumped on).
It certainly looks sleeker, but I’m an old fecker that grew up arranging CD and VHS cases like it was an art form and I just can’t let go.

The last time I bought a PS4 disk was launch for inFamous Second Son.
It does say:

- game share, between 2 PlayStation's, cuts every game price in half so nulls the game price argument imo
- lazyness, cba to ever change a disc.
- discs break, kids and pets are assholes.
- disc drives can break too
- one of my ps4s is up high near the projector so isn't as easy to throw discs into.
Obviously you can game share on a disc version console, but would still need to buy game digitally.

You can do all that with a disk version though. That's the thing I don't understand about it. You have the best of both worlds! The only thing that's different is the shape of the console. You're making an argument for digital games there, which I agree with.
Anyway, this Isn't a judgment on people who are going to buy this console, obviously! I just don't understand the existence of said console for the consumer, really.
I think for the minor saving you’d make it’s better to just go with a disc drive. Mine doubles up as a DVD/blu Ray player
One I didn't think about is not having storage space for 200 games. A lot of people like clean / minimalist rooms these days.
Sony have probably done a lot of research on how many accounts use only digital media. I'd expect either price decrease or higher drive space.

I'd be fine with digital only but disk drives are so cheap theres no good reason not to get one really. Being locked to only PSN would be an issue too i guess, having some protection from that helps.
If the storage is the same then, yeah, it's kind of a no brainer, but if the SSD is bigger in the digital version it might be enough of an excuse for me. Although having a bigger SSD and still being cheaper seems highly unlikely. I don't know what to believe anymore.
Cyberpunk delayed until November presumably so it can launch alongside the new consoles.
Spider-Man, Cyberpunk and the years usual multi-plats in Fifa, CoD etc isn’t the worst line up for a release. I won’t be playing last of us 2 until ps5 either so for me it’s going to be pretty good.

Am pretty sure ps1 is white. Black versions only started since ps2
Grey. The white/black PS5 fits with what PSVR started a few years ago. The signs were there.

Even as a kid I found the release of the PsOne strange. IIRC it came out a few months before the PS2
