You can't be serious. The best 1 on 1 defender in the world doesn't read the game well. He plays to his strengths and completely shuts down the left side of the oppositions attack. No matter who he plays against.

Let me guess Messi doesn't shoot well neither?
I don’t think he’s the best 1vs1 defender, and he doesn’t read the game well imo. He’s a fantastic tackler, but question yourself as to why he’s constantly having to make so many more tackles? He’s rarely in the right position.

I’m not even going to answer your Messi point.

Typical Cafe overreacting after one game back from a 3 month break. AWB was clearly showing signs of improving his attacking before COVID (assist and performance vs Chelsea). Give him time before saying he's should be sold ffs. He's been one of our standout performers.
Well said.

If he never becomes a better attacker than he is now his defending will still merit inclusion for the rest of his career.

That said, he clearly will work on the attacking and the trick, for me, is to learn to play to his strengths. He's never going to dribble past defenders from a standing start. He needs to take them at pace with the help of a good feeding pass, or he needs to cross early (already has some excellent crosses in his CV). What he mustn't do is stand on the ball for ages trying to gee himself up to try and skin someone. Takes the momentum out of our attacking football. If you're not already going past the guy, just feed the ball infield to Bruno or whoever.

I think he's the greatest 1 on 1 defender of all time.

Too many oppose any kind of criticism of the lad. Is it really controversial to say he needs to improve? I mean Valencia was slammed for the same thing and the consensus was his attacking contributions weren't great and needed upgrading. The frustration of having attacks die in that right corner still rings in everyone's mind. His link up in tight spaces also has to improve because he struggled against Jose's low block with no room to run
Who here has said that he shouldn't improve? Point it out

Thanks for buttressing my point. Since we are all in agreement that he needs to improve going forward, why the need to downplay criticism about that aspect of his game? He will always have a place in the squad because of his defensive prowess but his claim to be a nailed on week in week-out starter in an attacking team will hinge heavily on his improvement on the ball

It's because some people go entirely overboard. It was the same in the Smalling thread. People going way too negative like idiots.

We replaced Darmian with the younger and more expensive Darmian. We'll be looking for a new RB soon enough. You cannot have modern RBs who are useless at attacking.
You can't have great success as a club without a well balanced team. You need some defensive players in defensive positions, and it doesn't really matter if a shirt is modern or not if it doesn't fit. Hipster shirts with fancy logos gets all the shine right up until they don't anymore, but a clean white tee never gets old. Wall-Bissaka is a true United-player, and might prove to become one of the best right-backs of this decade once he gets more experience. The 'expensive Darmian' claim is just full on hipster hyperbole and also totally unnecessary.

Darmian hasn't done in his entire career half of what AWB did for us just this season. The only way this transfer could go wrong is if we sign some coach like Pep / Klopp who in turn demand an attacking fullback.

Well Pep does use Kyle Walker. I think 3 assists in the last 2 seasons, that's less than AWB.

Tbf that's precisely why fullbacks aren't judged or compared on goals or assists. it's a low output position where a single goal/assist can double a player's season tally. If AWB greatly improves his linkup but doesn't get another assist till next year i'll take it happily.

I’m not even going to answer your Messi point.
He makes tackles because he plays in the premier league and the other team has the ball for part of the match.

What do you expect? AWB to intercept every pass before it gets to the left midfielder.

I don't see how a defender making so many tackles is a negative trait.

He makes tackles as he faces wingers who always tries to take on defenders and beat them.

This Tackling = Not in position myth should die and quickly.

No matter how good your positioning is, without tackling you can't win the possession against wingers who tries to dribble past defenders .Look at his duels vs Sterling, he was always in the right positions and still made tackles as Sterling tried to dribble.

Tackling is very important attribute for Fullbacks, it's not like he is a CB who should rely on reading the game. FBs bomb forward and will rarely be in defensive position to just rely on reading the game,

Hasn't he played like 30 odd times for Italy mate? He didn't have the greatest time at United but he was a very solid player in Italy hence why we signed him.

AWB defends very well but he's not above criticism. I'd personally rather a player like Doherty or Trent at United over him. Okay maybe you'd be losing a little bit of defensive work but you'd gain far more the other way.

But Kyle Walker is a good passer of the ball. AWB is not. In fact, AWBs passing game is barely PL-standard. He is slow in the build-up and looks insecure.

You cant measure that in assists. Just look at Carrick or (Scholes towards the end).

Walker could pass and move well with the ball, and he's very agile. AWB's on the other hand is very slow off the mark and struggles to move in a straight line. His technique is horrible, it is like a nightmare.

I still believe Ethan Laird will replace him at some point in his career. I appreciate Wan-Bissaka, but Laird is just that good. ‘That good’ includes being very good 1v1 in defence too, so if he develops as hoped, I think whenever his chance comes along, he’ll take it.

I don’t have much of a problem with AWB, but I do have a problem with AWB and Shaw. We just don’t get enough going forward from wide areas. It’s a particular issue on AWBs side actually as we don’t get much from the right wing either.

If any player from academy replaces the first team member then it would be brilliant for the club, upgrading position without spending money and then we will improve the squad by relegating first team player to squad position.

Laird's injury problems might hold him back.

Agreed. Hopefully he can overcome them and fulfil his potential because it’s enormous.

True, but his successful passing is also as a result of City's (previously Pochettino's) successful positional play, where they insist the ball carrier should have several set options. I've seen AWB use inventiveness and technique to get out of tough situations that Pep wouldn't even want his RB to be in in the first place.

That's not to say that their passing is on the same level, Walker's passing is proven to be currently better; but I have no doubt Pep and Poch's training and playing methods are as big a factor on Walker's passing as his own natural talent. Meaning that if AWB were trained the right way, and we played functional football, he too could become at least as valuable an asset in possession as Walker. We've seen he has the inventiveness and technique to get out of tight spots on his own, IMO he just needs the right instructions to take that to another level.

We are also comparing a player who has had 1 full season in the PL.

This is his second season, can we wait until he improves a little before some fans calling for Laird to replace him?

2 months off and he is playing with James. You need someone a little more experienced than him to help him out as well. James and AWB are quite similar they are looking for options.

Watch how AWB responds when Pogba or Bruno push to his side, he gets more confident.

His performance tonight backs up this quote. He’s improved so much since the start of the season. Some of the comments in this thread after the Spurs game were ridiculous.

Another great assist, his attacking wing play has come on a lot. Can turn a full back inside out and put a good cross in.

Imagine that, 1 year of attacking practice and he looks more confident funny that!

he really isn't as bad as people like to make out, just needs to be more confident.

He's improving in his offensive duties, which I admit I thought he wouldn't given how gangly he looks on the ball at times. He's turning from a very good into a great purchase for us.

Tonight was another clear sign of his improvement going forward that we've seen since Christmas time. A very nice assist today, and he put in another great ball towards the end of the game (unfortunately no one made the run into the space.)

Anyone who wrote him off for not offering enough going forward at the start of the season were far too hasty. He's a defensive minded player first yes, and damn well good at it. No shame in establishing yourself in the team by sticking to what your good at and then using that base to build from there.

I absolutely adore the lad. Shat on the people who said he`s not good going forward. When he hits his prime he`ll be the best RB Utd have had since Neville

Think people need to calm down when talking about young players, and AWB is still in that bracket.

It is important to remember he played for a palace side that were never very attacking, and he also was paired with Zaha, who is very good as a solo attacking threat. All he had to do at palace was his defensive duty, which he did very well. He started the season strong in defence, but not very good in attack, partly as he seemed to lack confidence and seemed to hesitate to go forward in fear of being caught out of position.

It is obvious that the coaches have been working with him to improve his attacking game, but also important to note that not having a good RW is just as much a problem for AWB as well. Today, the fact that Greenwood could keep hold of the ball even when he was marked was helpful to AWB as he could get up the pitch without worrying about being caught out. Having James as a partner was probably not helping either, as he is fairly light weight in that aspect.

He will keep improving, and even though he may not put up the same numbers as TAA, he should still be a very good RB for us. We also have some more attacking alternatives at RB in Dalit and Laird.

Overall, the RB position is looking very strong currently, and AWB is improving with time.

Did exactly what he should always be doing today: played to his strengths. He didn't try and dribble past players the way he was sometimes against Spurs. That will never be his game. He used his pace when running into gaps and otherwise relied on his explosiveness to steal a yard, Valencia-style, and get dangerous crosses in. That's all it really takes, as today proved.

He is a freaky magician. Who plays like him seriously? Such a crazy player to me, just a joy to watch on both ends and it's really a very interesting set of attributes he has for such a big talent at right back. You can say he lack in a few areas, and I think he does still, but it doesn't matter if his professionalism and will to improve continue. I really want to see what type of player he is at his peak.

Quick, strong, tall, weirdly long-legs for world class tackling, good technique, imaginative on the ball and with the dribbles and he is very agile. If he can continue to work on his delivery and ability to create space for himself offensively, as well as improving defensively in some aspects like concentration and positioning, he might become the best allround RB in the world with his weird skills.

The one he might remind me of the most is Evra in his style. Just has way longer legs and hair. In character he reminds me of Irwin.
