Moyes himself confirmed it.
He said Giggs and Phil Neville told him Thiago was not a Man Utd player.
I am speechless.
Phil Neville? fecking hell! Even I would hesitate to take footballing advice off Phil Neville.

Moyes would of just shown Thiago videos of Phil Jagielka and he would of walked after 6 month anyway.

The story at the time was that Thiago, Strootman and someone else were done deals but Moyes wanted to scout them personally before taking a decision. It sounds realistic when Moyes was also known as dithering dave at Everton.
The 3rd target was Herrera according to reports. Moyes dithered to such a extent that by the time he settled on Herrera it was too late and not enough time left in the window to complete the deal.

One more example of not having a Sporting Director and giving too much control to a manager.

Kimmich isn't fit to lace Thiago's boots. He should leave Bayern just cause of statements like this.
That's about as valid a statement as when said that "Schneiderlin is as good a passer as Roy Keane was, if not better".

Looks like old muppet dream coming back to haunt us.

Grealish, VdB, Havertz and now Thiago... Lots of options for Ole to consider and upgrade the squad further. Hopefully we'll choose wiser than 6 years ago

Yeah because SAF would have accepted working with a DOF

I know it's Guillem Ballache but if this is true, my word.
Very hard to believe. Pep explicitly wanted him at Bayern, i don't think Thiago needed to be turned down by another club to be convinced.

The whole point is that Moyes was a ditherer and a bottler. We're doing absolutely fine without a sporting director now. Managers like Jose and Van Gaal use the lack of sporting director excuse for failing miserably at Man Utd when the truth is that they were just shite.

Yep, If I remember it correctly he was going to come here until Pep jumped in and stole him. obviously working with him at Barca and selling him a similar dream at Bayern is what did it.

Then we had LVG turn down Kroos the next summer.

That's the one, I couldn't remember who it was at all.

I'm talking about the problems post SAF which includes the vast amounts wasted with no real direction.
Little point mentioning that in the context of missing out on Thiago in 2013 though

When we start competing for the league and Champions league then we can say we're doing fine without one. There's some way to go yet though and alot are easily pleased it seems with opinions changing game by game.

The current model requires a manager to stay for the longterm which stastically isn't the case at most clubs so adopting the most successful model(Sporting Director) is very prudent for long-term stability/planning.

It was Garay I believe not Herrera 3 midfielders in one Summer that doesn't sound like United at all.
It was 3 midfield targets but only could be signed. Do you remember who was playing in our midfield at the time?

I mentioned that in context to a poster who is on the same page as me and we've both discussed the matter at length previously.

Mate, sorry but what? Kimmich is absolutely essential for Bayern and would be an undisputed starter in 99% of all clubs.
I know something like 7 others have already called you out on it, but that is not enough.

Yes it was Garay - at the time our centre-backs were pretty evenly split between i. old and injured, and ii. inexperienced and injured, so Garay made sense age-wise.

Herrera was a very late in the window option; IIRC the club had followed him since the Bilbao games, so offered Moyes the chance to move for him but he wanted to scout him himself before making him almost our most expensive transfer ever at the time - I remember MUTV justifying not signing Herrera for that reason on one of their phone-in shows in the aftermath of the window.

Disaster all-round.

De Rossi then confirmed a few months later than we came to him too late in the window and that if had been approached earlier he would have joined. A Dof would have gotten us Thiago that summer and Kroos a year later. We have only figured out our midfield 7 years after that mess.

It was a complete shambles. Our midfield was a shambles for a while and we just didn't replace Scholes hence our football was getting worse and the 'no value in the market' line was constantly repeated.

Fergie himself has confirmed that Herrera was his target and it was reported that United had done the ground work on all 3 of Thiago, Strootman and Herrera and the scout reports were available to Moyes. All three players being targets didn't mean we were gonna sign all three. But Strootman and one of the other two was sensible considering it was reported that Moyes wanted two midfielders.

Daniel Taylor of The Guardian reported the following almost 7 years ago.

"The issue of Thiago Alcântara also needs clearing up. In his case, it has been portrayed as him snubbing United for Bayern Munich when the truth is actually that Moyes decided he was not entirely comfortable going for the Barcelona player. United had been monitoring him for three years and effectively lined up the transfer but Moyes, as everyone at Everton can testify, likes to have a huge amount of background information on new signings and, having initially gone along with it, decided in the end he did not want to take someone else's word about a player he had seen infrequently. Again, it boils down to a new manager shopping in a new market, with a limited amount of time"

I fecking hate Moyes, like literally fecking hate him. The feckwit didn’t get that he was no longer on a shoestring and managing Everton and decided that Fellaini was a better signing than Thiago, every time I think of Moyes I think of him showing Ferdinand and Vidic videos of Phil fecking Jagielka and my blood boils.

Wow. I am honestly speechless. That man had the cheek to turn down Thiago? Twice? Does he realise how bad of a manager he was? What authority did that man have that hes turning down WORLD CLASS PLAYERS FROM JOINING UNITED?????

And dont get me started on Van Gaal.
Yeah those two have done so much damage to this club, what on earth are they thinking turning down Thiago & Kroos.

I've heard about Moyes turning down Thiago before but it just doesn't ring true to me. I reckon Pep just came in and stole him from under our noses and we deflected the blame whilst hurriedly pursuing other taller, more hairier avenues.

Why would Moyes turn down a player who would make his life easier, in a summer he's already stated it was tough to do deals, only to sign a far worse player for more than his release clause at half past 11 on deadline day? If Fellaini was anywhere near our first choice, we'd have paid his release clause. We didn't, all our targets went elsewhere and so we were left with no option. We were clearly desperate, and yet against this backdrop we're told that we apparently had Thiago begging us to sign him and we said no? It just sounds like a face saving excercise to me.

I mean, we're not talking about some unknown midfielder from River Plate. This was Thiago, Barcelona's next talent, Xavi's heir apparent and he'd even scored against us a year previously! What's to research? Moyes would just say 'yeah feck it, it's not my money. Get him in the door'. Anything to make his life easier, surely?

True words.

i highly doubt Thiago was desperate to play under Moyes when Pep wants him.

It's no choice

Not to protect moyes but most manager has players which they rejected who became amazing.
Thiago alread was amazing ffs. It just shows how obvlious he was to European football that he didn't even know who Thiago was at barca?! the feck?

He shouldn't have needed any extensive scouting, just a YES PLEASE and bring me Kroos while you're at it!

Instead he fecked around, tried to get Fabregas who clearly wasn't interested and then ended up with Fellaini at MORE THAN HIS BUYOUT CLAUSE

I was Moyes out as soon as it became apparent he was actually targeting Fellaini. Even before the fact that he signed him for more than his release clause because of dithering. Turns out I still gave him too much time.

It's plausible because if you remember correctly his buyout clause was so low because Barca failed to reach certain appearances or minutes clauses in his contract. What he wanted at the time was a big club that could guarantee him serious game time. He looked at our midfield and saw his competition at the English champions would have been cleverly and Anderson, I think he must have fancied himself to usurp those 2.

Shows how much you watch Bayern! Kimmich is absolutely class.

No he's not as fancy but for a midfielder he does all the dirty work + scores and assists plenty too. He's the perfect combination of workhorse and skill and presses like a mad man.
He's slow, weak, and a mediocre passer. Scoring the odd cute goal doesn't make up for that. I might not watch Bayern week in week out but I pretty much watch all CL matches. Never been impressed by him.
That's about as valid a statement as when said that "Schneiderlin is as good a passer as Roy Keane was, if not better".

What's this guy feeding you guys? No he wouldn't be starting for pretty much every team. Bayern simply have too much for the Bundesliga at this point.

Please tell me you guys don't really think Kimmich is as good as Thiago? I recall the Spurs game in which Kimmich scored a great goal but proceeded to do very little in the first half. In the second, Thiago came on and Kimmich was shifted to right back, and the difference was remarkable. Outside of scoring the odd good goal there's nothing Kiich does better than Thiago.
