Will Liverpool’s 19th first division title have any effect on United’s transfer spending?

Will Liverpool’s 19th first division title influence United’s transfer plans, short-term or long-term?

The United board may have already identified a few transfer targets and will buy one or two players in the transfer window, irrespective of Liverpool winning the title. The ongoing pandemic will probably limit transfer spending, but this thread is not meant for any COVID-19 related, or usual transfer-market related discussion. A few posters may even suggest that Manchester United need not spend anything and the current squad is good enough. While I appreciate those view-points, this thread is not for that kind of discussion either.

I am interested in exploring a different dimension. My question is simple - will Liverpool’s 19th first division title have any bearing on United’s transfer plans? Will the Glazers/Ed/Board be hurt to see Liverpool inch closer to the 20th title and thus be tempted to spend a little more than usual? Or is there no scope for any sentiment in the day-to-day operations of the current Manchester United? Is the board downright frigid? In the last couple of days, after Liverpool won the title, the print-media is giving me an eyesore, and it is equally impossible to watch the TV. Surely, a few influential people on the board are as hurt as the average supporter is. Or are they?

Will Liverpool’s first Premier League title influence United’s transfer plans, short-term or long-term?

The owners will not give a shit about Liverpool winning* the league. That is the preserve of the fans.

No it won’t
There was never a plan to spend big anyway, business as usual.

Well we can only wait and see. This will show whether Woody is telling the truth in wanting to back Ole to get us back to the top or not. I expect one of the bragging rights when negotiating the latest noodle deal is the fact that we have the most titles. as this is now in danger will it loosen the purse strings more? I wont be holding my breath.

I hope not. You should never act based on something that you can't control, we should focus on ourselves and plan meticulously our moves instead of reacting to what Liverpool or City did or didn't do.

A lot of people are saying we should be aloof above it all and stay our own course.

Maybe that is a mistake.

If United aren't going to step up hard and compete at this point, then when exactly?

United should be in Liverpool's face from the start of next season. The squad is nearly ready, or as ready as it will ever be. The summer should reflect that.

Our transfer business since Ole came in has been very good. Far more sensible decisions and not going for risky over the hill players or players just looking for the big last payday.

James probably been the poorest of the lot under Ole but he came from the championship for 15m. He shouldn't need to play all the time like he has.

I don't think we will finish higher than Klopp or Pep next season whatever we do now. The gap is too big to close in one window and they have better managers. Pep could well leave next summer though so we need to make sure we are the team to take on the mantle to topple either City or Liverpool in 2021/2022. That's probably more realistic. Hopefully get top 4 (or 5) this year and next year consolidate and get closer to the top 2. 2021/2022 should be our goal for a title push. Sancho next summer (if we can't get him now) could well be the catalyst too.

Of course we should react but spending on expensive players hasn't really worked out for us before so who knows, let Ole finish the rebuild and see where it takes us.

Why would they care. I doubt even our player cares too much.
Eh? Our manager clearly has contempt for them (remember the "Couldn't care less" clip?) and we have a bunch of youth players - Rashford, Mason, Pogba, Scott plus English players (AWB, Maguire, Shaw) who will know what this means to the club. Am quite certain that Ole and the local lads particularly will be hurting badly. The puerile reactions of the dippers should also help fire up the team. So to dismiss the team's feelings is, at best, unfounded.

As for the owners and Ed, I'd like to think they will invest - but more because of the unique circumstances than the dippers winning. This window will see the dippers and Spurs shafted financially and unable to strengthen without significant sales, while both City and Chelsea need to spend a lot to rebuild. It'll also see a bunch of clubs stressed financially and forced to sell. Normally, we'd be conducting our business to strengthen, while knowing the others ahead are also strengthening. This window though is unique. If we strengthen now, we'd make up far more ground than normal! As such, I do think we will spend and strengthen - but because of the circumstances and not because of the scum winning.

Ummm... We're fifth because we have had horrific injuries and are coming back from a gutting by the toxic one. Indeed, we're rising and creating optimism in the fan base because of the local lads.

I don't see why Liverpool winning instead of someone else should or will change anything.

Being 20-30+ points behind the league champions for 6 years straight is the only motivation the board should need to step things up.

It should motivate the club and board to spend but I can imagine the clowns on our board making the excuse that it’s still 20-19. Also worth noting that city absolutely dominating the past few years hasn’t motivated our club so why would things change now?

No, we're fifth because we were complete crap in the first half of the season. Cannot make excuses when you are losing against relegation fodder.

Agree completely with this. To win the league again we need careful, deliberate planning. Going on a spending spree will not be a guarantee for knocking Liverpool off their porch.

Nope. United are a business. We don’t care about winning titles. The goal is to get top 4. We’ll sign no more than 2 players .

Liverpool have arguably the best coach in the world. And we think the poor mans Kenny Dalglish is the man to get us challenging them. Our board is clueless.

Honestly don't think we will have much to spend this summer. With everybody in such a dire financial situation, I can't imagine spending 80m on a player let alone the 100m that dortmund are looking for.

Its going to be a difficult summer, but hopefully Ole has identified his targets and we can get them for a reasonable price.

What the Glazers seem to forget is this; the longer we spend in the shadow of other clubs winning trophies both Domestically (Chelsea, Man City & Liverpool) and in Europe (Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus & Bayern Munich), the more likely we will lose an entire generation of potential fans.

So if the want to see Manchester United remain "The Biggest Club in the World", they need to invest big to not just restore our previous Domestic Dominance, but to properly challenge the CL on a regular basis. Their failure to realise this after 16 years shows why they need to go by any (legal) means.

How much do you think the Glazers care about the Liverpool vs Manchester United rivalry?

Probably don’t, unfortunately the Glazers and Ed are business people rather than football people. We are very much in danger of undoing SAF hard work of knocking Liverpool of their perch.

I don’t think the senior people at United give a shite about who wins the Premier League. I’m sure they think it would be nice to win it for customer relations but if United were getting top 4 every season and Liverpool were winning the league they wouldn’t give a solitary feck and spending would be the same if Newport were winning the league every year.

We spend money to sell shirts and to try and qualify for the Champions League. Remember this is the same club that thought Fred and Dalot would be adequate to close a 19 point gap on City.

However, what I will say is that I don’t think the Liverpool board give a feck either. They struck gold with the right coach at the right time who knows when to get rid of players, how to pull off shrewd signings and coach a team. This is the basis for their success. Yes, they finished top 4 and got to the CL final in 2018 and still spend a fortune but a lot of that was down to the Coutiniho sale not a boards desperation to win the Premier League.

United need smarter footballing people. To answer the question the Glazer lot wouldn’t have given a feck in 2009 but we were still successful.

We should be desperate to succeed and have a plan in place to do so, regardless. Where Liverpool are on 19 or 32, it shouldn't impact our focus on excellence.

I don't think this board cares about footballing matters. Liverpool won the UCL finished second and didn't care. Winning a league won't matter.

If Liverpool went and got commercial deals that were better, we would definitely announce new commercial deals.

Agreed.
But some fans like to make excuses.
It's like when parents make excuses for their kids, who are badly behaved and perform badly at school. Next year my kid will do better....it won't unless you accept what is wrong and attempt to correct what is wrong.

Correct.
It's all about the sponsorship deals and the financial results. For our board, their big day is when they announce results...that's their league title.

Excuses make you feel better though. It's like everything is against you while you do nothing wrong.

Things will get toxic next season if Liverpool win the league again and we're not even a footnote in the discussion. They know they have to have a good summer of recruitment because we absolutely have to have a say where the title goes next season or win domestic/European honours.

I do like that we are one of the biggest clubs commercially.

However; we are a football club, the main aim should be to be the best club.

What happens when you are the best club? Commercial deals follow. Look at how Liverpool and Spurs have climbed the ranks by 2/3 great seasons?

Imagine if we were winning titles and having these commercial deals, we would be untouchable imo.

How hard is it to see, success on the pitch will bring success off the pitch?

What Pogs is the new lingard  Youth he's bloody 27.

Why would the richest club in the world have to sell to buy ? And Chelsea have already spent 50 odd and still have money, as they had no sales bar Kovacic which was a loan turned deal last July.
