The 1980s Spirit - Magic and Bird

This NBA side is built around two of the greatest NBA players of all time, forever rivals but whose styles mesh extremely well together.
Magic and Bird lead this team with the quintessential 1980s verve. Showtime no-look passes and clutch shooting, both with an extremely balanced all-around game. Larry Bird was phenomenal at game-winning defense along with his famous shooting exploits. The style here is based on powerful teamwork that both Bird and Magic excel in. To complement them is Sidney Moncrief, an all-around star with game-winning defense and Elgin Baylor, a scoring machine who can finish a lot of Magic and Bird plays if they are double-teamed. I will rotate the center position frequently throughout the 7 game series using Bill Walton, 1978 NBA MVP and finals winner and the 1987 Sixth Man of the Year and Giannis, for classic moments the Greek Freak when speed and all-around ball handling are needed. They both fill important roles and will be constantly rotating based on in-game needs. Terry will come off the bench for more shooting when Bird is taking double-teams and Artest will be frequently rotated in to disrupt and diminish Labron's game.

They played together in a charity game once in the mid-80s I discovered:

Starting Five
Magic Johnson
Sidney Moncrief
Elgin Baylor
Larry Bird
Giannis Antetokounmpo / Bill Walton

Bench
3 point shooter: Jason Terry
Defend Labron: Ron Artest
Bill Walton /Giannis Antetokounmpo

Bird Steals from Isiah Thomas

Magic Mixtape

Bird Mixtape

Vs. the opponent
Labron James = 6 Losses in NBA finals (3-6 overall)
Playing against each other frequently both Magic and Bird still have over 50% record in NBA finals (Magic = 5-4 and Bird = 3-2). Magic and Bird are consummate winners while Labron has proven to be highly vulnerable in the big moments against teams that play with amazing teamwork and defense. With Sidney Moncrief and Ron Artest available to hound Labron all game, Magic and Bird will shine here.

How does Lebron at Heat compare to the older one in terms of passing and court vision? Klay and Dirk together is almost cheating though the same applies for Magic and Bird :D Would prefer a more physical center in moby team tbh

If I was a neutral I'd vote against onenil just for this Skip Bayless level stuff. At least Skip knows how to spell his name.

@oneniltothearsenal can you shed more light on how a 6 ft 5 Baylor is gonna have any chance at stopping a 7 ft GOAT power forward in Dirk draining those jumpers on his ass all day long?

Absolute size mismatch over there.

From the limited footage I've watched of him, I felt Baylor wouldn't translate well to basketball in the 90s, but that's just my opinion. Happy to be proved wrong.

I personally would of started with Artest instead of Baylor. Although I disagree with @Himannv that his game wouldn’t translate, the man is a top 10 SF all time.

Again I’m not particularly sure how Moby is playing on both sides of the ball as it’s not listed.

Does everything run through Lebron? Pick and Pop with Dirk? Are we running off ball screens for Klay?

Defensively, how does Dirk/Pau guard Bird?

At the moment I’m leaning towards Moby, simply because I don’t think anyone can guard Lebron except Artest, who is on the bench.

What do you make of Baylor playing at 4 and his match up against Dirk?

Advantage Dirk, easily shoots over him with the one step jumper he loved so much. Would of thought Bird might be on him as a smaller big seeing as Dirk isn’t so physical.

I like Moncrief on Klay/Payton, I might have been tempted to sacrifice Baylor for Giannis.

Giannis
Bird
Artest
Moncrief
Magic

Play a modern fast paced style, have Giannis on Gasol to negate the post game, Bird on Dirk, Moncrief chasing Klay off ball, Artest on LBJ which is a great matchup and then leave Magic on Payton.

Offensively neither Dirk nor Pau is a good matchup for Giannis so exploit transitions with Magic.

Probably should have voted for Moby here. I'm not convinced by Baylor and I have trouble figuring out how he will fare against more modern players. I think he'll struggle against the likes of Lebron and Nowitzki.

winner of the draft will be the one that posts the best assist, if nobody posts in 24 hours moby is the winner as the father of no words victories in drafts.

Baylor was a hell of rebounder in his career,I would say he was similar to ABA Dr.J(elite rebounder).Dirk wasn't an elite rebounder for pf,he was average in defensive robounds and in offensive rebound he was mediocre due to his playing style.IMO Baylor can outrebound Dirk but if Dirk uses fadeaway,Baylor couldn't deal it for sure.

Baylor would be perfect 4 for small ball.
