Do United fans underrate their players?

It is probably a mix of overrating and underrating here. Emotions cause people to get extreme in both directions.
I think the biggest difference with the top 2 is the managers they got. They lift the players to new levels and Ole is not doing that. Most players are underperforming under him in my view.

No. More often than not it's quite the opposite. Players that we think are world class barely register for neutral fans

We are currently in a battle for fourth and even in a fairly pleasant season by recent standards, we a hundred miles behind the pace setters. The answer to the ok is no.

If anything we as a fanbase often vastly overate players from the academy.

Who exactly is underperforming under Ole?

For players who've played for more than 1 manager here:
Under Ole ...

• Rashford is playing his best football at United
• Martial is playing his best football at United
• Matic is playing his best football at United
• Paul Pogba is looking truly world class
• Fred is playing his best football at United
• McTominay is at the very least maintaining his level
• Shaw is playing his best football at United (apart from maybe just before the leg break)
• Lindelof - I don't rate him hugely, but is playing his best football at United
• DDG has been struggling, and that preceded Ole

New players ...

• Maguire, AWB, James ( to a lesser extent, but from the Championship), Ighalo, and Bruno have all come in and done well - better than most expected.
• Greenwood's come in and has 12 goals

Before you refer to the table, we really shouldn't be thinking of the season as 1 homogeneous set of results, because it's really not.

The first half of the season was woeful and inconsistent - mostly due to the inability to break 'smaller' teams down when they defended with a low block, however, our main flair players (Pogba, Rashford, Martial) have all missed huge chunks of the season through injury. Now they're back and with the addition of Bruno, we've looked a completely different side since the turn of the year, so lumping everything together doesn't give a true picture of the trend of improvement.

Would you attribute our league position to our players being bad or having one of the poorer coaches/managers in the league though? Nobody's saying our squad is top 2 level, but it still should comfortably be top 3-4. But it's just getting dragged down by having a poor coach.

Ultimately, your league position is a weighted average of the quality of your squad and the coaching staff (depending on how much weight you put on each).

I think that both our players and our manager are more or less there where the league position reflects.

Ole is okay, but not world-class. Our team is okay, but not world-class (Pogba and Bruno are the only ones who might be considered world-class, with an emphasis on might). It is an okay team, with an okay manager, who is in an okay position in the table.

Other than Bruno and Pogba who are truly top level players, the rest of the squad is overated. The most overated player in this squad is Rashford. Don't get me wrong he is a good player but nothing more than that.

Never seen those stats before but kinda drags it home. Pogba, Matic and Bruno give us an actual spine to the side.

Daniel James I’m always harsh on maybe unfairly but 80 percent of the minutes is insane. We defo need Sancho as soon as possible. James is in reality doesn’t have the cutting edge to be a true United player.
