It is a bad sign getting injured when you don't even play. I think I'm going to write him off now. Missing an entire season through, with a three-month break in it, is not bad. It is not the first time he has been out for a long period, either.

He is 22 years old now. I think people who think he will get over it are probably dreaming. Bailey and Jones never got over them.

I don't think Bailly has had as many injury lay offs as Jones has, I can remember the serious knee injury from last year, but I'm struggling to think of the times that Bailly has not been available for selection prior to that bad injury, although I have no doubt that he would have picked some knocks that would have kept him out of contention possibly three or four times since he arrived in 2016. I believe he is available for the Tottenham game, I'm not sure about Jones. Anyway, as this is a Tuanzebe thread, I think Axel is a very good player, but needs to be playing regularly, so I can see him going on loan next year if Mengi performs well in pre season, and ultimately would love to see him playing regularly for United. Think he would be outstanding in a back three.
Before his knee injury he had his ankle injury meaning he missed most the season before too. He has a bruise that kept him out for 3 weeks before that. Another Knee injury which kept him out of 8 games the season before that. You rarely see a player with that many injuries suddenly stop getting them.

Tuanzabe needs a loan to prove he's able to stay fit. I agree. Mengi should step up to replace him in the squad.
Ever since Wes Brown.. Silvestre.. Heinze.. GNev..

Gets worse in the 2010s with Rio, Vidic, Smalling, Jones, Rojo, Bailly, ...

Fit CBs: Evans, Blind, Lindelof and Maguire.

Also to be fair, Smalling always return back quickly from injuries.
Yes but all those players you mentioned started suffering those injuries at the end of their careers. Brown, Silv, Heinze & Neville were all at the end in the mid 00's. In the 10's Rio & Vidic were at the end. Jones, Rojo and Bailly all play like psychos. Smalling has had niggles throughout his whole career but never bad enough to consider him an injury concern, except that his back-ups Rojo and Jones were always out.

Evans, Blind & Lindelof are composed defenders.

Moral of the story, old defenders have injuries & pyscho defenders do too.

Unpopular opinion maybe we should try to convince Smalling to stay one more season. We will then get his replacement next summer and let him go. We have been fortunate that Maguire and Lindelof didn't get any serious injuries. We can't have Axel, Bailly and Jones as the back ups when they all have questionable fitness records. Axel loan, Bailly stays let Jones and Rojo go.

I think a few fans are of the same opinion. I had such high hopes for him. We cannot afford to have an injury prone CB.

We should look to bring Mengi through Imo.

Maguire and Smalling might actually be the best pair but I think we should sell the latter while we still can

? Brown is injury prone since young, early 20s no? He finally got over it around 2006 onwards at United.

Agree with Silv, Rio, Nev and Vida but Vidic is also a "psycho defender" but just that his body can take it for 3-5 seasons then he became injury prone. Heinze is similar to Smalling for me, play rash and gets injured a lot but often back from injury quickly.

Hopefully Axel (and Bailly + TFM) can get over it like Brown did. I lost hope with RoJones.

Thats not issue as long as we bring someone to start with Maguire or to atleast be someone reliable both ability wise and fitness wise. Going into next season with our current back cb's would be irresponsible.

I can't recall how Brown was early on, he doesn't appear to have got over it later on though, he wasn't selected as often and still often injured. Look at his injury history.

Vidic didn't seem as rash as the others, in my opinion.

I don't think there is evidence of players suddenly not getting injuries, particularly players like ours where it doesn't take much to injure them. They don't even have to play to get injured, particularly Axel.

Brown was plagued by injuries throughout his career. Managed to have the odd season where he stayed fit but some really bad, lengthy injuries early in his career led to more niggly stop and start existence later on.

To his credit, he always returned looking quite sharp but was never able to reach the heights his talent promised when he broke through.

He will be replaced by Mengi, young injury prone players hardly change, will most likely be injury prone his whole career and never develop.

He's missed 25 games this season through injuries and missed 17 games last season with Aston Villa.

I think we are at a right time to sell him, he's 22 and we dont want another deadwood player in our squad.

Will be disappointing if injuries end up becoming his main limitation. If I recall correctly, Van Persie wasn't always fit in his early days. Not was bad as some of our defenders though, there seems to be an injury disease with permanent residency at the club. Hoping that Axels manages to overcome this, I am one of those who believes he has the potentials to be a top defender.

Sadly this seems to the usual story with him. Not sure we can consider part of our main 4 CBs next season
Agreed. Potential is there for all to see though, so I would prefer if we moved him on we have a buy back in place. Feel 22 is still too young to completely write him off, but with previous experience in trusting Jones and Rojo backfiring, would be silly to have him one of our main 4 in the future.

Love the lad and hope he can overcome these injuries.

I really hope he stays fit too because I'd play him now if he was.

Why? Lindelof and Bailly are both miles better.
I'd put him in now because to me he has shown the attributes to partner Maguire.

Lindelof has proved he isnt good enough to partner Maguire or atleast doesnt have the right attributes and Bailly has become our new Phil Jones.

But I agree they've both proved to be a higher level player so far.

The right way is not to just throw in an inexperienced player as CB. You can do that with a winger, forward and even a CM, but the CB position is so vulnerable. I strongly believe Ole’s plan was to let him play the easy EL during the spring and then more and more PL matches around Christmas to let him compete for a spot in the starting XI. Now this didn’t work out. If Bailly comes back fully fit without new injuries, I think Tuanzebe will have a tough time getting minutes at United. It’s not the part of the season where you develop unexperienced players. Not in cups, not in the league.

edit: I’ve seen in many places that Tuanzebe should be very fast but I have never seen that on the pitch. I think he looks more of the composed type. Anyone who actually knows if he is crazy fast or not?

You say Lindelof doesn’t have the right attributes yet have conceded something like 3 goals in our last 12 games & 2 of those were individual errors from De Gea.

I’m all for giving youth a chance, but the number of people on here who rate Tuanzebe higher than Lindelof is baffling.

The only reason people seem to want him to play is because he’s got a bit of pace. That isn’t anywhere near enough, and there is no guarantee he will have pace for much longer given his injury record.

He can barely even stay fit for 1 game. I would rather have a defence where we have conceded 3 in 12 playing week in week out than a defence where we keep changing and chopping.

Exactly. People’s bias for younger players is all I can attribute to anyone calling for Tuanzebe over Lindelof.

Think last summer, we could have gotten about £25m for him. This summer i’d be surprised if it was more than £15m. We could do with raising some funds, and can’t see anything more than sentimental reason for keeping Axel, and wanting an academy player in the team. Even if that were the case, he’s far away, and Mengi is rapidly closing in on the first team squad too.

If we weren’t so polite, we could probably raise some good money this summer by selling Smalling, Jones, Rojo, Lingard, Pereira and Tuanzebe. That’s probably close to £75m I’d imagine, for players who have contributed little to nothing of value. As it is, I’d expect us to try and keep Lingard, Pereira and Tuanzebe to the point where nobody will pay more than £5m at most for any of them.

United didn't produced central defender from quite a while, hopefully situation won't stay that way for long... definitely could save us lot of funds if one of Axel or Mengi could excel.

It’s tough to see him having a career at United with his injury record.

he’s been injured for 197 days since December 2018.

For a club that has carried the likes of Phil Jones for years, I think we can manage to give an exciting young prospect a proper look. He looks a player.

Is this kid ever fit?

What is it with us & injury prone centre backs? Bailly, Jones, Rojo, Tuanzebe, Fosu-Mensah. We literally have 2 centre backs who can be trusted to be fit.

His contract expires at the end of June 2022. He'll be at United for at least next season before kicking on and establishing himself as CB cover or be sold/let go. No rush on Axel just yet, especially if he's on low wages. I mean the club still has TFM on it's books and he's gone the same way of Axel, but he's still here. TFM may end up being sold in the next two windows, or be let go in the summer of 2021.

Wonder if he'll go on another loan, he needs game time and is currently around fourth choice or lower. I think a loan to a club like Sheffield United would be great if they'd take him, he's better than all their backup CBs and would get playing time in that 3 man backline. Plus his pace and passing capabilities would fit Wilder's system. Really want to Axel to succeed but it's tough with his injury problems, I'm sure potential loan destinations would be very wary of that. Don't think he'll make it unfortunately but I hope I'm wrong.

Think he’ll be gone this summer or next.
When you think about it there's not really much point keeping him if he's constantly injured, out of our CBs we're willing to part with he'd probably fetch the best fee.

Well, it depends if anyone is willing to take the risk on him. I would be annoyed if he became another Phil Jones for us.

He is never fit when we need him..

He will stay, talk about future club captain a while ago etc.
I think they'll perservere because unlike Smalling who wasn't good enough on the ball and hampered Ole's way of playing out of the back, Axel is a far better footballer for the particular style Ole wants to implement.

The injuries are a worry but Ole and the coaching staff who monitor the player regularly will know best.

This is my thinking. I think Mengi is 12-18 months behind him in terms of his status at the club. He’ll probably be hard to shift now though, so terrible has his injury record been, so I imagine he’d stay. That said, if a club did come in and offer £20m-£30m for him, and we rejected it, I’d be scratching my head for any reasonable justification for it, other than him coming from our academy.

Ole says we won't see Axel until September. Must be an opportunity for Mengi now.

What's this injury he's picked up? Have high hopes but this is killing his opportunities at the moment. I often feel like making it can all be about timing and with Maguire looking for a solid, long term partner now is no better to stand out above Lindelof/Baily or at least run them close.
