Why don't we bring him as #2 next season? He can replace Romero, play the cups and be part of the squad.

Poor Romero.

But I think this is going to be the solution, its going to be a massive ask to come (back) to us full time as number 1 keeper and expect him to handle all that comes with it.

Of all keepers post Schmeichal I can only ever remember Van der Sar slotting in seamlessy (and lets face it he was special). We simply cant afford a settling in period for a number 1 goalkeeper.

Will he be happy with going from playing 36 premier league games plus cups, to suddenly only playing up to 10 cup games barring De Gea being injured?

Time will tell.

Probably not. He might become England Number 1 as well; I don't think he would want to lose that to playing second fiddle.

He has had a very good season at Sheffield United, despite those recent mistakes. If he has another great season, Manutd will have to make a decision. Either they make him number one or he will leave.

Doubtless, he will attract attention if he has another very good season.

The thing is, we are all over every little mistake De Gea makes. It's less so for even Henderson, who is our keeper too.

Romero has been championed by many as being better than De Gea, but they forget he plays a lot of the lesser cup games.

He let one in the other day, that if it was De Gea everyone would have been all over it.

It's a huge call. Back as number 2 would suit us, but harsh on Romero.

I agree. I remember De Gea was getting a lot of criticism not long after he joined for his mistakes. Henderson will get a bit of time if he plays for us, but it won't be long until criticism happens when he makes a mistake. Still, he would have to face it at some point here; he won't get the same experience at a club like Sheffield United as he would at a top club.

I don't think it is unfair for Romero. I don't think there would be much difficulty for him to find a second goalkeeper position at another top side; after all, the guy doesn't seem bothered about being number one judging by his career. He is a good second keeper, but I am not too bothered about him.

It's the problem with goalkeepers: you can't really share the position. If both want to be number one, it won't work. It is like when Van Der Sar left Juventus after they signed Buffon; he just wasn't interested in being number two.

You cannot keep two goalkeepers happy who want to be number one. This might be irrelevant, though, if Henderson isn't that bothered about being a number one goalkeeper.

Would it be fair to say that even if Henderson isn’t ready to step up, De Gea is about ready to step down?
That’s probably spot on.

You could have two number ones for a season. If DDG didn’t like it he might drop his wage demands to get out. Problem is DH might not be good enough to replace him.

It wouldn't go well for us . The media would go crazy every time one of them made an error or looked like making an error and saying thd other should be playing.

We have to make a decision on one of them

Cash is obviously an issue for us. And frankly there is an argument that Romero is as good overall as de gea. Commands the area better, among the best shot stoppers in the world has better ball control and distribution than ddgthe sun was in his eyes and Harry got his timing wrong (for once) so blindsided the shot yesterday. Get Henderson and Romero to slug it out for no 1 next season. We could play 60 games that’s 30 each!
My opinion is that we must keep Pogba, sell Jones, and one or two others as well as De Gea; and that we must go all out to buy a dynamic, Fast, aggressive centre back, grealish and Sancho and if possible a nimble/ fast and aggressive DM. We have a passive and slightly slow defensive central area. Maguire is a top top player but you need to complement him with players of pace and aggression - Lindelof and Matic are ok and Fred/mctominay are not dms just very good squad players to rotate with Pogba/ Bruno
we would have the best squad in the league
Henderson/Romero
w-bissaka. koulibaly Maguire Shaw/Williams
Neves/Matic
Pogba/mctominay/Fred
Fernandes/grealish/Pogba
Sancho/Greenwood Rashford/grealish
Martial/Greenwood/rashord

That’s the ideal first 18. You need 18 top players because Klopp has a magic wand and turns average players into what the pundits call the ‘best players’ my a*se

klopp either has them on the similiar stuff the germans were on in the 2nd world war or he can turn water into wine. Either way we just need to buy the best players. That above squad can win the league no question. Covid or not, United need to make 100 million plus in sales and shell out 300 - 200 million spent - surely we can do that
And don’t forget the shirt sales!

If Fernandes was a game changer imagine how confident the dressing room would be with players rubbing their hands knowing they have these guys on the same time

confidence breeds confidence. We can not afford to let Liverpool win it again next season. We must go all out to make sure we have the best players in the league. The above collection would be (in my opinion)

you have your opinion, I have mine. de gea has obviously lost his confidence and he is no longer a game changer. For me, his command of the box and distribution which are now vital parts of the game, are weak - it’s not just about shot stopping and even in that category he has made more mistakes than any other premier league keeper over the last year. He is simply not the same player - Anyway we should not even be in a position where we need a keeper who has to save loads of shots. If the team is set out right and we are on the front foot, and the keeper commands the area , there will be less shots against us!

That aside, if you had to choose would you have henderson or Romero (Argentina international goalkeeper with lord knows how many caps) and Sancho or grealish or better still both in your team or keep the current De Gea?

silly question for most I would think

with henderson, not romero. but also keep romero as an option.

I'd personally sell Romero and get henderson to compete with de gea for the spot.

in theory not a bad idea. But 1 de gea would fetch far more capital than Romero and I would rather have another top attacking mid like sancho or grealish than him 2 Romero is psychologically already prepared to continue as a no2 but change would give a deserved opportunity .When has he let us down and doesn’t his patience and vintage quality deserve reward? 3 De Gea’s mind set now is that he is either no 1 or he leaves. Show him the respect and let him leave before he loses even more value- this could be a damage limitation exercise 4 Henderson would be much happier to compete with Romero rather than the already allocated no 1 - DDG- he has said he only comes if he is no 1. You can’t have Henderson and de gea in the same squad

well then they need to make a decision based on how de gea finishes the season on whether or not to move him on this year or keep him for another year.

if de gea has a poor end to the season individually, i dare say his time at united should be up. if he suddenly and miraculously plays like the old de gea, keep henderson out of loan for 1 more year. if hes merely alright, then i would bring henderson back but keep him to give him 1 season to compete for his spot.

based off of the last 2 years of form, i personally would make the heartbreaking decision to sell de gea, bringing dean henderson back to United. you can maybe be out of form for 18 months and come back from that but i've never seen anyone come back from 2 years of poor form. i love david, but we cant be sentimental here, he has to go, unless he can completely turn it around by season's end.

I'm not saying De Gea is the best option, but Romero is untested. A few cup game / year isn't a good barometer

Fans are fickle, they always somehow thinks the next guy in line is the real deal.

Agreed - and of course. But I can’t see any change at all.

I don’t want to bang on about the subject and de Gea has been incredible for us but I’m thinking of the bigger picture. Watching Fernandes and Pogba in the same team and an in form Matic is a joy. Watching us keep the fecking ball and racking up 60-70 per cent possession over our last 3 games albeit partly against a 10 man Norwich (after we chose a weaker team) gives me great hope for our future.
Few more things and then I’m signing off.

1 we must not rest on our laurels and believe that just Pogba and Fernandes as personalities and gifted creative players are enough. First for me is Grealish simply because he is premier league proven, and has an unnerving level of confidence and passion for the game. He reminds me a bit of Eric. He looks like he has that Keane like driving influence even if he is a different player. I would go all out for him. Sancho looks amazing but he looks good in a very well drilled Dortmund team. Don’t get me wrong - I want him at United too. But get Grealish first. Imagine a fluid front 5 of Bruno, Pogba, Grealish, Rashford and martial.

2we are united we need players that Can grab the game by the scruff of the neck - like scholes, Keane, Cole, Yorke, Giggs and beckham did

3if you can find just please the individuals or the sum of the parts to replace them finally then we will surely play the rest off the park.

The signs are good but there is no time to rest. Let’s go get’em

4 we are the biggest club in the world. Don’t forget we have beaten Liverpool 80 times in the league alone to their 67. 2 of their champions league victories have been with a side that didn’t win the league! United have beaten every single team in the Uk more times than they have beaten us. Liverpool’s bad behaviour denied us entry to the European cup.

5Credit for winning the league to Liverpool
But this was a freak season and klopp has a magic potion because sorry but - Henderson, Fabinho and wijnaldum are nothing on the midfields of any other premier league winning team and I include leicester in that. Van Dyke - however is the best central defender since Rio and he should have been ours...

Besides can dyke, TAA, salah and Henderson (lord knows how he became so good after being so sh*t) who stands out in any other team.

6 Huge hat off to Klopp I don’t know what his magic potion is but it really is incredible how with so few naturally gifted (technique wise) players he has managed to get his horses to run 20 miles a match!

7we just need to keep ball and work our magic- we need creative surplus!
ok think I’m done , my fellow united fans god bless and to the future!

My issue with replacing Dea Gea with Romero is purely his injury record. He has missed out on a few games as our number 2 which would be detrimental to our season if he was promoted to number 1.

TBF I haven’t watched much of Deano this year except highlights. As a former goalkeeper I worry it’s a massive jump to playing at United. I forgot who said it recently but SU he sees more action during a match. At United he might need to make a big save 1 or 2 times in a match so mentally it’s a big difference.
I suspect there will be a breaking in period with him in the #1.

I don't think Henderson is ready to start for us, I also know Romero is clearly not good enough to start for us.

Hopefully Henderson will be our number one eventually, but next season would be too soon anyway, it won't happen.

I'm curious why you think Romero is clearly not good enough to start?

I think i've seen him make one or two mistakes max in the games he's played for us. Seems to have that relaxed mentality that all the top GK's should have. I quite like the idea of Romero and Hendo slugging it out for number 1 if De Gea was sold to make room on the wage bill.

Still saying what I've said all along. He's a very good keeper who will be world class one day. De Gea is a world class keeper not playing his best this season but still much better than most. Henderson should get another season on loan at Sheffield.

Next summer, we will know whether De Gea is in decline or was just having an off spell. At that point, Henderson will be about as experienced as De Gea himself was when we bought him, and we'll have had another year to look at him. At that point, selling De Gea and replacing him with Henderson - with excellent quality in Romero as backup in case it turns out to have been a mistake - will be a perfectly valid option.

Because young goalkeepers should play week in week out, that's how they develop. If we don't intend to use him as #1 then he should go on loan.

Watch his keeping for Harry Kane’s disallowed goal tonight

the kid is nowhere near ready to take over. Another loan is needed! mistakes like that would bury him at United.

Which one? All 4 of Kane's 'goals' didn't look great for Henderson

He can want to be Man Utd and England's number 1 all he wants but he looks nowhere near good enough

This year and next year is what will prepare him to get his opportunity at being Manchester United's #1. He still has loads to improve and adjust to the PL life with all the twists and turns it provides.

DDG got a ton of shit his first year in the PL, taking over for VDS. He did make his mistakes and was able to mature physically and mentally and get used to the PL. Same with Henderson. One year in the PL with Sheffield United isn't enough when he's still getting used to the league, getting used to expectations, and making mistakes or being critical of himself throughout the season.

I think the last week has shown that Henderson is best served having another season on loan at Sheffield United or another Premier League club and get another years top level experience, Sheffield United could get a European spot for next season depending on the cups so Henderson could get a a full season in Europa as well as the Premier League which would benefit him and us going forward.

The last week for De Gea has seen him fly under the radar after his mistakes as our front five of Martial, Rashford, Greenwood, Fernandes and Pogba has taken all the spotlight and attention meaning De Gea has had a couple of clean sheets and quietly built his confidence up a bit.

Not only that, but will that be the best for his development? I don't believe so.

I think fans are overthinking this. De Gea is still a very good keeper, Romero is a great backup that seems happy being so, and Henderson is getting a ton of football in the Premier League. Leave things alone and give him time to develop without it having an effect on our own results.

Yep, I can't for the life of me see why on earth we wouldn't leave him where he is for the next year. He should rack up 36 more Premier league outings, pending injuries/suspensions etc, and can challenge for the England squad from there.

We whopped De Gea on a deal until at least 2023, and at his wage it'd be a real struggle to shift him off, so leave it as it is another year.
Romero seems happy with his arrangement too, so all in, leave it as it all is.
