Maybe the idea is to stick him at LCB role next to Coated OR they are preparing for an eventual Coates sell?

Only time will tell.

I am more worried about finding a striker because Sporar is absolutely garbage. He is very close to approaching Diaby levels of shit.
It is probably the most difficult position to get good quality players, hence the reason strikers are always expensive even if they have dubious quality. Weissman would be a great hiring, but RB Salzburg probably already have him lined up to sign.

Hi Primeira league watchers. I would like to ask how is Andraz Sporar doing in sporting. He was very profilic in shitty slovak league. Is he already look good or as flop?

How is Ruben Dias doing?
Has looked entirely mediocre since the restart; making more blunders than normal. That said, Benfica as a whole have been a trainwreck, especially down their left side - Grimaldo getting injured has absolutely killed them and whoever is playing LCB is getting exposed regularly.

He's average, not awful but he's not great either.

Just straight awful.

When the Ball gets to him it’s like he is on an island. He does not know what to do with it.

He is not particularly tall and he is not fast either. He lacks technical qualities to hold the Ball up and his attacking positioning is terrible. He does not attack the space or attempt to guess the trajectory of a cross or drop or whatever. Furthermore when he does get his chances... he misses. He needs 5 chances to score 1 goal.

For the 7M we payed for him he has been terrible.

thats sad to hear, as he was very effective in our shitty league as well europe league. I would say he is classic poacher and always was. Maybe he needs more time to settle in better league. He was also trash first half year here, but then he became bombing goals. He was never player to play hold up play, or dribble and run past players, or link up play as Firmino, he needs balls to the box. But im sure hwen he find confidience he has very good instincts to score goals.

I hope you are right because right now it looks like 7M dumped straight in the trash.

Well Benfica are basically confirmed champions next season.

Jorge Jesus is all but set to return and I highly doubt he would come back without a guarantee of top quality signings (I think Gerson and gabigol might come with him from Brazil, just my guess).

So with the acquisition of the best Portuguese coach in actuality along with a influx of big signings soon to follow they will blow through the league.

Porto were one of the weakest champions in the past 10 years and that’s credit to the dip in quality in the league and Sporting obviously don’t count so with the best coach in the league and potentially the best squad depending on who they sign it’s going to be a breeze for the cnuts.

I follow Flamengo closely and consider them my second team. I’ve been extremely upset with Jesus, both the fact he’s going and the way he has handled it.

The more players he brings with him from Rio the worse it is going to be for you. Flamengo under Jorge Jesus were ridiculous. But the good news for you is that I doubt he will be able to bring more than one player, Flamengo are rich as feck in Brazilian terms and very stubborn; so they won’t be selling anyone easily.

Also, there are some insane rumors starting to trickle out that Flamengo are going to try to bring Gallardo of River to replace Jesus; in that case you can forget about any big sales as that appointment would be massive and signal another period of domination for Flamengo. I’m skeptical that he’ll come, however.

I hope JJ fails again miserably at Benfica. He will probably come crawling back.

He won’t, he was by far and easily the best coach in Brazil. He cleaned up the league effortlessly. Benfica will give him all the conditions to succeed along with the help of the referees of course.

Flamengo are very rich though so they might make it difficult for Benfica to purchase them BUT in the end of the day the possibility of jumping to Europe, to a bigger club, and to possibly play in the CL will prove too enticing.

I do agree with you though, I hope he massively fails but I just don’t see it happening.

Well, Jorge Jesus to Benfica is confirmed now. Disappointing that he left Flamengo. They were so good under Jesus.

Sporting basically saved Setúbal from relegation. This point is going to save them. Belenenses is going to make it easy for them, for sure.

I was just coming in to comment on that myself!

I watch a bit of Gremio and he's definitely very talented. I'm looking forward to seeing how he does.

Benfica knocked out from pre-Champions
No big surprises tbh. As me, @SCP and @Peyroteo were saying in the other day, PT clubs have re-entered the cycle of hiring established and "expensive" players or promising players that already have a lot of market interest like happened in the mid 90s, and in a small revenue league like ours this has high potential to fail. That period was our worst UEFA períod btw, despite hiring players who in theory are better than raw potential ones.

Verthongen, Darwin Nuñez. Weigl, etc

While Verthongen is actually a bit different because he came with favorable conditions for both Benfica and player (Verts wanted to keep playing in a top team and live in good vibe city even if it meant getting less money), players like Nuñez and Weigl costed 25M and 20M each.

For a league like ours this is a very risky business for the following reason:
  • From the moment they sign, their value is decreasing until they start delivering good end product.
  • If they fail, there is no way the club is going to get the money back unless the player's agent get a miraculous deal.
  • Not able to get rid of the player will take a heavy toll on the bank balance.
  • Some of those players were in a better league, despite being in a smaller club. I believe that those players will easily demotivate if they don't become first team options ASAP and think they left a better league to be on the bench.
We are a league that has to buy raw players for 10M tops, or maybe stretch a little bit more if the player is really worth it. More than that is not realistic.

Benfica had a solid start. To me they are clear favorites with their great signings

How in the world have Braga not scored here?

Santa Clara can't leave their own half and Braga keep missing sitter after sitter

Bullshit penalty for us :houllier: atrocious decision

We're playing well though. Porro and Mendes on either wing give us a lot of quality

Apologies for using the old thread, there seems to be none for 2020/21.

Just seen Pepe still starts for the NT. How has the old man been doing for Porto and Portugal recently?

He wasn't great at the start of last season but has been a beast since the lockdown break, it's insane how physically dominant he is at 37.

Doesn't surprise me much, now that I hear it. Impressive player, and in his prime one of the genuine world class defenders of the past 15 years or so.

Still has it in terms of being aggressive and winning aerial duels and 50/50s, but there's no way to escape human physics declined by age.

Not gunna lie,

My opinion on Ruben Dias MIGHT be changing. He has looked solid for Portugal every time we played so far this season and in the game vs Arsenal I was really impressed. I hope I was wrong with him as this will only benefit Portugal. As of now hopefully he carries on this way.

Sporting have started 2-1-0 with a game behind which I set to be played next week mid week. So there is a chance we can at start 3-1-0 with already having played Porto. So far so “good”. I have a lot to say about this team but I will wait for now.

Porto have no chance of winning the title with this weak squad.

Benfica are all but champions. 5 point lead already and I think within the next month this lead becomes at least 8. Should be a cake walk for Benfica this season.

Braga had a unlucky as poor start but they are picking up again.

It's a very young and inexperient squad. They will need time, and they are starting to have less of it.
VSC as well who made some interesting moves along with being able to keep Marcus Edwards.

Sure, that's to be expected. (Was only talking of his prime years, in case it was unclear.)

Porto did some decent loan deals, but they still lack firepower and creativity upfront which will cost them on the long run.
About Sporting there's no way to hide it: the squad is overall unbalanced, but Palhinha and João Mário will bring solid ground to the middle of the park, and birging Nuno Santos and Pedro Gonçalves was a good deal.

The problems are lack of firepower since the strikers quality is not good and the center backs, which is ironic if you bare in mind Sporting uses a 3 CBs system.

They should play to there strengths and play a 4-3-3. We have fantastic midfield options that we can exploit but instead we insist in a 3 CB formation when we don’t have the CBs do fit the system.
