from people who have seen him play more than me I have a question - what is his best position?

Managers seem to think right back but he looks like a centre back playing full back whenever I see him there. Is he any good in the air? Could he work as a bsckup DM to Matic? Because I really don’t like McT in that DM role.

Thanks

He did ok. I think it was a difficult game to come into as they've got tricky players but I wouldn't write him off. I think he plugged a gap and hopefully he can push on from here.

Not sure if I'm seen him play more than you, anyway - RB.

He has bag of stamina and similar to AWB, he has pace and agility to burn, good on 1-on-1 and love to slide tackle (Sane at City once said he is the best defender he faced).
Attacks better from the right. Seen him do this at Crystal and Fulham before, it's good.
Aerial defending is just okay, not spectacular.
Can be too rash at times so too risky, not suited to be at a more central role, plus I'm not confident with his positioning, so not CB.
Not a fan of his passing ability and positional awareness, so not a CDM.
Best playing him where he can get more spaces, don't like his play in limited spaces.

Think he is a John Oshea type, that is why Ole is giving this chance. It could be vital having a player like that in your squad who can cover 3/4 defensive positions.

Think he has played RB and CDM as well.

He’s a CB, always has and always will be.

Managers playing him RB doesn’t really mean they think he’s best at RB either. Fergie player Smalling and Jones at RB, he still saw them as CBs. Young players get pushed out wide coming through, that’s how it always is.

Did a good job filling in at leftback. Did most of his defending well, made a few runs forward to support our moves down the left.

Obviously we would be better off with a left footed player as our backup to our backup fullbacks as Williams is right footed. And at 22 he doesnt play enough football for him to be staying, you would think

I saw the match later on and he did a lot better than what I expected.
I think he is a DM. Not like Matic but a lot like Hargreaves. He is very strong and quick. His job should be to stop the opposition and to pass it to the creative players. He needs to play there to gain experience and with only experience would he know how to read the game.
He didn't attack much and maybe it was what Ole wanted? To defend first as he is not a left back and he has not played for such a long time.
I like to see him go on loan to a club in Europe where he can play as a DM.

In response to my question of what’s his best position we’ve had 4 different answers out of 4.

- one shout for DM
- one shout for CB
- one shout for RB
- and one shout for “John O’Shea type” jack of all trades mater of none

This guys best position is as ambiguous as the ending to Inception

An interviewer needs to flat out ask him what his best position is.

He lacks the passing range and awareness for a big club. He'd be poors mans Schneiderlin at any club wanting to actually win games. Yeah he could do a job breaking up play, but certainly not going to be a top class player in that role. His best performances over the last 3 years have all been at rightback and even then he lost his place to better players.

Filled in ok yesterday, but it was a bit of an emergency job, rather than hinting at suddenly becoming a superb utility player like O Shea.

Says a lot about Dalot that he still can't start even with Shaw and Williams out though.

Couldn’t watch the game and this thread has been unbelievably unhelpful at giving me a review on what kind of game he had.

He’s ranged from being diabolical to very good.
That partly reflects different expectations. Some people judge him as though he was playing regularly and that represents his normal standard. Others, and I'd include myself, make allowances for the fact that he's not played first team matches for 16 months, probably didn't expect the call, and he was playing out of position, and measured his performance accordingly. By that measure, he did well without doing anything outstanding, but really Ole just needed him to be a pair of safe hands and he did that with some aplomb.

I thought he was the best candidate to fill in for Shaw and Williams - he's better defensively than Dalot, who for me looks for like a straightforward right winger, and Bailly can be prone to costly errors. He's physically more like Shaw, and has good pace for a defender. I just thought Ole was unlikely to pick him because of his lack of match time.

He strikes me as very much a Van Gaal player - brought in, like Rojo and Blind, because he can play in multiple positions in the Dutch style, hence the very different views on where he's best. When he first arrived he was described as primarily a right back. He looked good in the recent 2nd team games he played as a centre back, though.

It's difficult to give a definitive judgment on him because he's played so little, partly through injury and partly because he's been out on loan, where he didn't impress the supporters of the clubs he was at. I think Mourinho wasn't interested in him, so that may have affected his confidence, whereas Ole is prepared to look for the good qualities first. It also gives him a potential backup at right back, where Dalot has failed to impress. At the moment he seems to lack Williams' gutsy ability to get forward and Shaw is a more complete player than him. I wouldn't read too much into his passing back to Maguire - that's just nervousness in a player coming back into EPL first team football after a long break at that level - Tuanzebe was doing the same thing to Romero in his most recent games.

Sorry there's no easy short answer, but he's the kind of player some people will dismiss out of hand as "not Utd quality" and others will say, "give him a chance" - I would say the latter.

I think he would be ideal as a DM, but he needs to work on his awareness and passing, but I think he will be cover for any back four position, especially full back for next season. You can coach him to pass the ball better, but not sure if you coach awareness, seems to be a instinct thing.

I think he could be useful as a RCB in a back 3, kind of similar to the position we have seen Shaw playing a few times this season.

I remember him being a little rash at times, but given how long it's been since he played, I think he did really well against an experienced player in Townsend.

His main qualities seem to be his physicality and tenacity, he's got decent feet and not bad on the ball either. Probably jumping the gun here but he could be a valuable squad player for us, similar to how a few have mentioned O'Shea already. I remember being very impressed with him under LVG. If he can recover that kind of form, but at the same time keep the reserved and simple aspect of his game we saw at Selhurst Park, then would give us more options.

I felt infinitely more comfortable with him playing than Dalot that's for sure, and that's a worrying sign for Dalot's future here. He's more of a RWB or RM, and we don't really favour any formation that will ever allow him get bedded in I feel.

Looked good when he came on. Was fast on the ball and to recover. Was making some interceptions too to get us going forward.

Maintain that there’s nothing we get from AWB that we couldn’t get from TFM. Tim was unfortunate to have had a terrible loan spell with Fulham. With us in his first season, then with Palace, he was impressive, and I’ve seen him look far more comfortable with the ball than AWB ever has.

He’s always been a great 1vs1 defender, great tackler, rapid and strong. Could have saved us £50m.

You’re really onto something here.

TFM has a role to play at the club.

I think the ship has likely sailed on him making it here as a first-teamer but I do remember being really impressed with his performances at such a young age when van Gaal was here.

He got a bit lost (like many others) when Mourinho took charge, and was probably a bit unfortunate. If we do keep him around though, I think his future is as a centre-back. He doesn't look comfortable enough on the ball to play full-back long term.

You forgot one thing -- fitness.

TFM had his big injury keeping him out of many games, and there's a risk he won't be the same.
Hindsight is really 20/20 with you..

Would saved us 50m but would also cost us many points since we don't have good player at RB in TFM's absences.

This isn’t hindsight. People always complain when I reference things I’ve said in the past - but I said all this last summer. I wasn’t against signing a right back, I was against signing a right back of the profile of Wan-Bissaka, as I felt we already had a player who could do what he’s good at.

Also, my point today was not a ‘we should have’ post, it was a ‘we could have’ post. I’m musing. Hypothesising.

Would be perfect as a RCB in a 3 man defence. There's no getting past him and he'd not be challenged a lot in the air.

Already a better attacking full-back than Wan-Bissaka.

And he isn't even a full-back.

Really thought he should have started (unless the thinking was he started the last game, first game in ages and couldnt do a second so soon after).

Looking over my shoulder.
Absolutely rapid and closes down players so quickly. He also had this one moment where he controlled the ball perfectly to set up a nice forward pass. He looked good! Awb looks knackered, so I would not be opposed to TFM stsrting against West Ham.

He probably will be a right back in all honesty. It's the one position where he's shown some quality in the senior game. Ironically he lost his right back spot to AWB when he was on loan at Palace.

AWB needs a rest, he should start against West Ham. AWB has not been himself in the last few games, take him out put this lad in.

IMO it was harsh. Fosu Mensah was having decent season till that point, then we had game against Palace which means he couldn't play. AWB did well but it was more or less same as Fosu Mensah. From Palace point of view, there was no point playing loaned played when they have player who offered similar quality.

ManUtd game came at wrong time for him then Palace didn't see the point of developing our player when they had player who was as good defensively.

Now that he is back fit, would love to see him against West Ham. He is good defensively and he is also fresh to play 90 mins.

He didn't do the same as TFM. He was a lot better. When AWB broke through his defensive stats were off the charts from the get-go. Perfect for Hodgson's system.

TFM did well enough, especially when he was doing a one-on-one marking job on a guy like Sane.

He looked much better as a RB.

Think AWB deserves a weeks rest in preparation for Leicester.

Not convinced he's any better than AWB on the ball but his athleticism could be a help.

I don't remember properly, so fair enough.

Hopefully we give AWB break against West Ham. He looks exhausted.
