So i got myself a switch with mario odessey. Gotta say that being able to play proper good looking 3d games handheld while travelling is pretty cool. Mario is very good but maybe im getting a bit old for the formula.

Anyone considering Paper Mario out on Friday? Being drawn to that more than Ghost of Tsushima tbh. The reviews for that have left me a bit underwhelmed.

The main game is quite easy. But there's real challenge to be found in the post-game, which is ridiculously long.
But yeah, I agree on the Switch. It's a great device. Especially when you share a TV with someone. Yesterday I finished SteamWorld Heist while my family was watching the news or something.

I'll keep an eye on the reviewers and make a decision. I still have plenty other things I haven't finished yet though.

I was convinced it'd be Paper Mario I would be picking up this Friday but IMO Ghost looks amazing so opted for that.

My experience with Ppaer Mario games are mixed so I'll probably wait to pick it up (id normally say wait for it to go on sale but Nintendo rarely if ever discount first party games)

I already paid for this a while ago, will hopefully receive it tomorrow or Friday.

The Paper Mario series is good, the writing is probably the best part, so I would suggest getting involved in the characters and reading the text. There can be a fair bit of it, but it is very funny in parts so I'd recommend doing so. Unfortunately, the latest two main instalments (Sticker Star, Colour Splash) were not up to the standard of the first two games. The developer (Intelligent Systems) has seemed reluctant to go back to the original set-up which is what everyone is craving.

I could understand the Wii game (Super Paper Mario) as that took a different direction entirely and was not a bad game, it was just 'not a Paper Mario game' in the way that the original two were (turn-based battles like a Final Fantasy game for example). However, in Sticker Star on the 3DS, they went back to turn-based battles and the quality writing, but brought in a Sticker system where you purchase stickers to use attacks. Not the worst thing and the game probably gets far more hate than it deserves, but I strongly agree that it does not match up to the first two games. Colour Splash on the Wii U was largely similar except you add paint to your hammer to do attacks / puzzles etc. There's some decent stuff in these games but the overall level-up / random battles / way of using items etc is just not how most fans of the series want it to be. Colour Splash had people avoiding the random fights throughout the game entirely because there was just no benefit to doing them. It seems from the reviews that Origami King could be quite similar to that, which is going to be disappointing but I still think the game will be good.

I am hopeful that Mario can just use his Hammer & Jump attacks all the time without them costing Stickers / Paint as you could in the first games. But those games actually had experience points gained from all battles and you'd choose to boost either your HP, FP, or BP. HP is obviously your overall Health, FP was for your Special Moves with increased damage and BP was Badge Points (the real winner and thing people want to return). You could add Badge Point slots to Mario and attach Badges to him in order to be able to perform special moves using FP and a whole host of other cool quirks. This had a significant amount of strategy to it which the developer hasn't been able to replicate with the other systems they've tried. A game that is seen as an RPG but doesn't really have any kind of character progression seems a bit odd, but it's the direction the series has gone.

I would still suggest playing this, but I'd watch some videos on YouTube first of the previous games to see if it's something you'd like. Check out AbdallahSmash on YouTube as he did a great series recently where he played through every single Paper Mario game in preparation for the release of this one. I just had a bad feeling that the majority of battles in this game will become pointless very quickly, which is super disappointing since they have put a lot of work into the actual battle system it seems.

Edit: Oh, and if you have a GameCube / Backwards Compatible Wii and see a copy of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door going cheap anywhere, buy it... That is one of my favourite games of all time and the pinnacle of the series for sure. Anyone who has played all the Paper Mario games and says that isn't the best one is lying. It's quite an expensive game though usually going for £100+ on eBay if in the case and decent condition. Glad I kept mine!

Reviews are out. 81 on metacritic so far with scores all the way up to 100.
It seems like it depends whether you like it as an action-adventure as opposed to an RPG game.

Yeah, it seems like it's mostly what I expected. Random battles become largely redundant from mid-game onward. I haven't seen if there is an enemy log yet but that would be an incentive to me (trying to defeat every kind of enemy at least once in the game).

Mario's Boots and Hammer can be used all the time which is good. However, the downside is that more powerful versions of them are degradable. This has been described as the Breath of the Wild of the Paper Mario series and I can see why. This is a bit of an in-between from the original games and the latter entries. Eg. In Paper Mario you could attach a Badge and use Metal Boots to jump on enemies with spikes on their head. While in Sticker Star, you'd use one Metal Boots sticker and it's gone. Now, you get a physical item but it won't last forever. At least this is some form use for the mass of coins you seem to get

Again, this will be a good game. But unfortunately, it will be compared to other games in the series that are infinitely better. They do a lot right and make a good game, but there's always that thought in the back of your head that it could be even better if they just went back to the roots.

Still looking forward to playing some of it. I have Friday off work too!

Pretty much. Sticker star and Super Paper Mario were great games in their own right, just not up to 64 or the absolutely brilliant TTYD.

I have all of them on disc/cart including the superb Super Mario RPG which spawned this series off in a roundabout way

I have always thought that Paper Mario was a game where you play Mario as a paper boy.

I've been living a lie it seems.

Do Nintendo purposely create an artificial scarcity for Switches?

I know it has been difficult to get ahold of one but I thought that was due to the pandemic and workers not working as much and therefore making fewer consoles whilst people bought more be 8 they were stuck at home.

It seems odd that Nintendo wouldn't want to meet the demand.

It creates more prestige and hightens brand value. Well... That's what I think.

I only aggressively looked for (and bought it) when I knew there was stock shortage

I got mine after checking amazon regularly to see when they were back in stock. I wasn't going to pay stupid money for a switch

Gotta be honest, the new Paper Mario is pretty dull. I'm struggling to keep interest past the first ribbon.

It's got tons of charm and style, but it's even worse for Link Between Worlds in hand holding and the new battle system is so dull you actively avoid encounters from the first few levels. Also the battle timings (and weapons) are heavily dumbed (if that were even possible) and within the first act you get TWO new ways to find the only interesting collectibles.

I will continue and hope it changes my mind, but I'm already so bored I'm playing it alongside replaying Sticker Star and the latter is waaaaaay more interesting as a game (plus the 3D is 3ds games is ridiculously under rated in games that do it right!).

Gotta admit playing Mario Odessey on my new Switch has made me love Nintendo again. I was personally never greatest fan of the Wii and Wii U. Don't know which game to get after this one. Played breath of the wild on Wii U and despite it being one the best reviewed games ever and universally loved I felt i lacked the formula that traditionally made Zelda games great. So I think maybe I will go with Luigis mansion 3 next or some pokemon game.

Just got Overcooked 2 on sale. I hate cooking, I hate being in the kitchen and playing this game with my wife (who instantly got the hang of it) is giving me an anxiety attack

Breath of the Wild is mostly an exploration game. I didn't like it at first and stopped playing but I gave it months later a second try and enjoyed it.

The new Pokémon games are still the same formula without real surprise. I think they are still ok and the main story can be done under 20 hours. Then depending if you like online battles and raids, it can last a lot of longer. If you don't have Nintendo online, some of the raids (usually some of the event ones) can be challenging since the NPC aren't very strong. You can still do trades but by using Pokémon Home if you don't have Nintendo online. Without a paid subscription, you still get access to the events and mystery gifts (and of course the updates).

If you have Nintendo online, try Splatoon 2, it is a fun game, even for people who don't play shooter games.

I really like Fire Emblem Three Houses too.

Yeah agree with most of that. I've just got past the first ribbon and hoping it removes some of the stabilisers now. The standard battling is already tedious but the boss ones are fun. Best thing about it for me so far is finding all the toads and yes two items for that is unecessary. The one you don't get from the shop is shite as well so I won't even bother using it.

Some of the dialogue is pretty funny and the artwork you can collect for the museum is gorgeous and actively encourages more toad searching. At the moment it's a 7/10 game.

Loving the fact they've put Donkey Kong Country on the Snes app, but most of the rest of the titles on there are underwhelming. We're what, over three years since launch now, and still no sign of virtual console? Still no gamecube or N64 titles available, despite the Wii U having that capability. I don't understand Nintendo.

Just grabbed the Ultimate Edition of this for £3.74 (well half that with what points I had left) on the store. Probably won't start it until I've finished Paper Mario though.
Nice. I stopped playing once TLOU came out and now I'm on GOT but I intend on getting back to finishing it.

I wanna pick a Switch up but they’re still sold out everywhere. Should have taken the plunge a few months back when Amazon had them back in stock.

I tend to agree with Paper Mario. It feels a bit more like a Paper Mario re-hash of something like Spyro or Banjo-Kazooie with the collectathon aspect, but a vastly different battle system. I want to try and find all the collectibles, Toads etc. The battle system is very hit-and-miss. You can tell they have gone to great detail to try and make it interesting, but sometimes it feels flat and tedious. The worst part is obviously due to no character progression through most battles, there is very little pull in wanting to battle a particular enemy more than 2-3 times.

Visually the game is fantastic, as is the music and most of the performance and writing. However, one area I found to be a huge struggle for many reasons was the boat part, when you're going down the rapids. This is rather difficult to control and one of the Collectibles is obtained by collecting every coin and filling every hole with confetti whilst going through it - that's going to be so difficult. Also, there is one part where the frame rate absolutely tanks (at least in handheld mode, I need to attempt this in docked mode and see if I find it any easier and if the console handles it better). That was rather disappointing but it's the only performance hiccup so far.

This game is definitely a 7/10 at best, even if some parts of it grip me and it becomes much better, I don't imagine the overall experience will warrant more than that score. It's not bad, just nowhere near great. I'm not sure I would buy the next Paper Mario game if it continues in this direction, I may make the switch to Mario & Luigi if they bring out a new one and it looks good. For now, I'm hoping they remaster the first two games, or even make a game closer to Sticker Star (I'd just like the Badge mechanic from the first two games to replace the Stickers then it'd be a much better game).

Look on stockinformer if you're in the UK. Helped me get hard-to-find stuff recently, as they send alerts as soon as anywhere has them back in stock.

My daughter wants a switch lite for her birthday in September, and I thought they'd be no problem, as everywhere had them back in April. Now it's just the same as the regular switch, out of stock everywhere.

If you don't mind used, check forums like AVforums classified.

Seem to be a lot more for sale the last few weeks compared to earlier in the lockdown.

I got my v1 used around May time on a forum for £200 with the pro controller, when they were selling on eBay for double that.

Cheers fellas. Haven’t decided yet between a switch and a switch lite, I quite like the look of the lite but I think I’d get good use out of the TV aspect so will keep on the look out!

I've got a spare grey one (unopened) with Pokemon Sword and Minecraft - in the original shipping box they came in. Ordered one in December last year, accidentally ordered two and the company wouldn't refund.

I see what you mean about that rapids section.

I'm currently at the Shogun/Ninja Theme Park. Easily the most fun section of the game so far. Even the battles are getting slightly more interesting now I can use the Vellumentals in them.
