I am very concerned about the situation with De Gea. I’ve noticed with keepers that they have a short life span at the absolute top of world football and at different stages of their careers. De Gea has been world class from 2013-2019. Since then he’s not been the best in the world. He’s been overtaken by Oblak, Ter Stegen, Ederson and Alison and that is not what we are used to saying or feeling about De Gea.

He’s been a fantastic player for us but he needs to go and we need Henderson back. He’s got to be our number one now. De Gea is not going to sit on the bench but I also feel no one can afford this guys wages. Real Madrid have just won the league with Courtoius so they won’t be interested. I don’t know who’s going to take him but we cant afford to mess this up. We have to get it right.

‘David is for me, the best goalie in the world’. Wonder how many times Ole can keep coming out with that nonsense with a straight face on.

That second goal looked really strange. Has anyone checked whether he needs glasses or something? He put his hands at the completely wrong distance from his body.

He does wear glasses. Well, contacts. When he was signed there was a bit of furore over his eyesight

Oh I didn't actually know that. Well get him new ones!

Sidenote: Doesn't Romero usually play in the cups?

Wonder if PSG would still be interested because get the feeling he maybe needs a change of scenery

You wouldnt accept the kind of mistakes he's been making this year from a keeper for Bournmouth or Norwich. Sure he's will make better saves than most in the Premier League, but Jesus wept, he's made some match enders this year. There's so much wrong with his game. 5 years of being the best player in a crap team has pretty much set his stall out.

Anyone fancy compiling a list of when his feckups occur because every one of them seem to be at 0-0 or a crucial time of the game. Never at 3-0 up
Chelsea H (last season at 1-0 up), Everton H&A (this season at 0-0) & Watford A (this season at 0-0) immediately came to mind but know there are more that I haven't mentioned.

thank you for your service David.

Not a fan of Hendo but would be bad if we dont give him a chance now.

The part about him being mentally strong is not true. Mentally strong in other facets of his life perhaps, but mentally strong when he makes a mistake?

Nope. He does not pick up.

He's in a weird position. He's now an expensive risk, as opposed to a dead cert. His wages will be gigantic and the price tag wont be worth it for anyone in this post-pandemic financial climate. Especially in the modern game. He isnt a modern keeper anymore sadly. He's like 2002 goalie. Just hangs around his own box, gives no instructions to the centre halfs and cant play out with his feet. If you want a good shot stopper, there's cheaper options than him.

So I don't go in for the idea of selling him (partly because his salary makes him almost unsellable) but it might be getting to the point of needing to drop him. Send the message that this isn't acceptable, and that he is replaceable.

Would swap him with Dommaruma in a heartbeat. He keeps his wages, we pay them 30 million on top to make up for the lost value.

There is a balance between backing your player who is making mistakes to keep his confidence up vs causing complacency (subconsciously in the player) due to knowing you are undisputed no. 1.

Time to challenge him with Henderson.

Hate to say it and I have no idea how, but I think DDG's time has to be up. For all his class that he has shown since being here, the last 18 months or so he has put us up against the cosh with some outrageous mistakes and enough has to be enough. Bad form doesn't last this long, he is done.

We would be laughing our arses off if any keeper from any team around us was gifting this many goals in a season. Love the man but it's time to start planning for life without. Just don't know how that happens if nobody is interested in him.

Giving Hendo a shot next season doesn't seem to farfetched now.

Romero should have been starting today regardless
Yeah that was a big surprise because he is usually the cup keeper, surely this wouldn't be to do with Ole thinking he should have done better with the Norwich goal in the quarter final would it.

He has won everything except CL.
I’m not going to detract from his achievements but based on this Mikaël Silvestre is a bigger club legend.
made PFA team of the year so many times playing for the club.
You’ll say the reason my Mikaël Silvestre argument doesn’t equate is because he was never at the level of DDG in his position but I was specifically questioning him being a club legend. He was a damn good goalkeeper for long periods, no dispute but whilst individual honours in a poor period for the club are commendable when you have a club like ours that’s littered with trophy hunters, what does a POTY & making Premier League TOTY do for the club?
played for nearly 10 years and most of them at very high level.
Again, commendable.
obviously he is a club legend. Mental anyone would even argue that.
It really isn’t.

For 4/5 years he was one of the best goalkeepers in the world, during this time he played in a poor side but in the grand scheme contributed a League Cup more than Phil Jones.

His career at United isn’t over but if he left in the Summer when reflecting on his United career he’d be looking back at a swath of personal accolades & less league titles than Chicharito.

DDG has been a good servant but had he left when he wanted/was valid to I think he’d be/have been a better player for it - he stagnanted imo. At the beginning of his career here, during a part of the Van Gaal years & for the past 18/24 months he’s been a liability - can’t label that legendary but respect yours & others opinions that he is one.

I take it by your username it’s an ode to the great Rooney, now that is unarguably a club legend.

Disclaimer: David De Gea has done marvellous things for his employers & was for periods our best/most important player. I rate him highly.

He's been backed a lot by Ole given his tremendous howlers 2nd half of last season, but this faith hasn't paid off. Huge mistakes again this season: Watford, Everton, Chelsea...just off the top of my head. All very costly.

If showing faith doesn't work, maybe showing him he's not irreplaceable and putting him under threat will.

People have this weird inferiority complex when it comes to De Gea. Its as if we should be eternally grateful that he was generous enough to play for us when we were so unworthy. And now we have to pay him back by paying him a fortune and never dropping him or criticising his performance no matter how bad it is. Anyone who thinks we should move him on are deemed disloyal, ungrateful or accused of having short memories.

What a load of crap. It's football. Players are good enough for a while then they aren't. When they stop bring good enough somebody else takes their place. All footballers are aware of this. They don't think they are owed their place if their performance no longer merits it. David has had his time and now it's somebody else's turn. Time to thank him for his efforts and move on.

The first time it started to look a bit worrying was the Sevilla game in 2018 when he knocked us out of Europe. He'd made a couple mistakes already that season and they were now creeping into the bigger games.

He then collapsed in the WC and hasn't looked right since. There's been a collective effort to ignore it and hope the problem just goes away but he's clearly lost his nerve.

the Manchester United mega contract kiss of death. No chance we can move him on unless we do a Sanchez and that’s not going to happen to DDG not for another season or 2 anyway at least. I also like the look of Donnarumma. He could be a really dominant keeper in a big team.

Oh god yeah the Arsenal one was where Xhaka hit it and he got wrong footed wasn't it. The Barca one was Messi's second where the shot just went through him much like we saw in the game today. The worrying thing is that they are different sorts of errors and are happening far too often for it just to be a one off mistake.

I agree, how many years left on his contract? Ideally we will be looking for a player swap deal as no-one is outright buying him and giving him them wages. I think our only hope is that he does regain some form next season.

Wonder if Athletico would be interested in a cash swap deal for DDG back? :smirk:

I can dream

Love De Gea, but he needs to shape up or be shipped out. His blunders have cost us top 4 last season and now an FA Cup final.

why do we give whopper contracts to players that are clearly in decline. Part of winning at recruitment is also knowing when the perfect time to move a player on is. He’s wanted to leave for ages and now he’s tied down long term somewhere he probably doesn’t really even want to be and he also has the added pressure of being the highest paid goalie in the world and he’s crumbling. With more ruthless recruitment he’d probably be leaving around now instead of starting into a mega deal. He’s been poor for a long time unfortunately. It’s gone beyond a blip. I fear this is the standard we are going to have to get used to if he sticks around.

He has to be dropped. This kind of form in any other position would lead to that, I've never believed goalkeeper should be any different.

It's his concentration imo, I don't know why but it's gone.

Bring Henderson back, give him the no.1 shirt and tell Dave he needs to earn it back. If he's not up for the fight, ship him out.
Two words

Dean Henderson
DDG was bad today but I don't really trust Henderson myself. Henderson has been making bad mistakes too and that for Sheffield. I fear the pressure would get to Henderson if given a chance here.

I'd go with Romero for the time being. Henderson should be sold and funds should be used for a real number 1.

His transformation from Schmeichel (minus the aerial control) to Barthez (minus the occasional good performance) is complete.

He is terrible nowadays.

Exactly. I will never understand this logic. We don't owe him anything. He was great for us when we were shit and we rewarded him with that fat paycheck.

But it's this club where you are allowed to be completely shit just because you were great in the past.

1 fecking example when a player who has had such a steep decline turned it around..give me one.

Obviously he has to cost us top 4 again on Wednesday and the Europa League for Ole to see there is a serious problem

I asked this In the match thread so thanks for answering here. I guess they do regular eye tests but ever since last season and that goal he conceded against Arsenal, I just came to my mind that something's up with his eyesight:)

It's easy to forget in the face of the errors of the last couple of seasons just how many times this guy has bailed us out. Far more than the amount of errors he's made. But something is seriously wrong. I keep reading on here it's decline. It's not decline. He's 29. A 39 year-old keeper who never had half as much ability would expect to be saving the routine shots he's been letting in. It must be a mental thing, a confidence thing. He seems to have been in a downward spiral ever since he made that howler at the 2018 World Cup. Confidence is key for any player and that applies to a keeper more than anyone. It's a lonely position and there's no hiding place. I can see why the manager doesn't drop him, a show of faith to bolster confidence and all that, but it must be clear now that approach hasn't worked and he should be benched for a few games.

I'm not sure Henderson is going to be the roaring success that practically everyone on here has decided he will be. It's one thing putting in decent performances for Sheffield United, where you're under no pressure, everyone thinks you're great and is happy you're there. Quite another doing that at United when your every move is scrutinised and you're under constant, unyielding pressure. Make one mistake, everyone will be saying you're not good enough. Harder to survive that spotlight as a keeper than any other position. Ben Foster was more highly regarded back in the day than Henderson is now. Everyone thought he'd be number one for years to come. Wasn't even in doubt. But he crumbled under the pressure. I still remember watching in abject horror as he dropped the ball straight onto Darren Bent's head. One mistake led to another and there was no coming back. United career ended, just like that.

I hope the club can find a way to restore De Gea back to his old self and give Henderson more time to develop.

De Gea quite clearly has to feel some pressure for his position because he is too comfortable and knows he can make mistakes but won't be dropped.

I cannot see that happening until at least the season after next because certain Henderson will go back out on loan again next season.

His poor distribution has definitely become an issue in this new era of keepers like Alisson & Ederson (hate giving them two credit)
