So new transfer season and a new thread.

We absolutely need a left footed full back as to cover shaw. It doesnt have to be a costly option but we need one for sure.

Williams is primarily a right back and I don't like him changing his foot to cross which halts the momentum of the game play.

Grimaldo would be my choice but would be expensive i guess.

I also like Lewis from Norwich which would be a cheaper option.

If we're going to sign a LB it has to be a Shaw replacement, not a cover for him.

Shaw has been doing fine this year. Why would you want to replace him ? He is our best full back (I rate him above AWB)

That is how most transfers are viewed anyway. If the new LB turns out to be better than Shaw, then that's good. Unlikely though.

Jamal Lewis at Norwich looks a good prospect. I don't think we'll be in the market for a new left back but I think he'd be the perfect foil for Shaw if we were.

Also totally agree with you about Brandon Williams. We are going to ruin that lad by playing him on the left. He doesn't have a left foot whatsoever. He should be competing with AWB for the RB spot for me. Laird will probably move into that role though soon so Brandon might end up being surplus to requirements.

Nah he was switched to left back mainly due to laird looking like a very very talented right back in the youth teams

Maldini was a right back by your definition as well

Dalot can play lb potentially as well

Don't think we are signing a left back this summer

We're not City, we cant collect fullbacks just because. Shaw has shown enough to have the starting spot for now and we cant buy somebody to play there for ~5 games a season. Williams is perfectly good enough to deputise and his right foot is not a massive issue, and I'm sure we must have a left footer coming through the youth setup we can look to for cup games.

With AWB on the right we need some real threat from our left back. Shaw has improved but he's never going to offer that in my opinion.

Isn't exactly the point ? All of the players you mentioned are right backs converted to left backs and not exactly the proper player we are looking for.

I am ignoring the Maldini part completely as you know its a whole different discussion altogether.

Irwin was OK on the left for a right footer as well
Williams has had a great season and him and Shaw are just fine as our left back options next year I think

And we had world class wingers who could maintain the width at that point of time. SAF has played Pique, Smalling and Brown as full backs . Doesn't mean we can go ahead and do it now though ?

Things have changed and the width is now coming from the full backs. We need specialist players.

Having only one left-footed fullback in the team isn't ideal.

It's also a position that suffers from a big drop after our first choice but that's a problem in a lot of areas.

Wes was possibly the best right back in the league for 1 season when he played there. Others were simply down to limited choices, or to aid their development. As we do not have any players who simply do not get suspended or injured, there are times when Bailly, Lindelof or whoever might get called on to move a few years wider on the pitch, we can't have 12 fullbacks in the squad to cover all eventualities.

Irwin was just OK!

Agree our LB options are fine. Williams is a good young player, and proven to be a good back up.

Irwin was very very two footed. Ryan Giggs used to always go on about this in his training videos.

I think we need left back options because regardless of whether people think Shaw is good enough or not, he's pretty injury prone. I think he's fine. He progresses the ball very well but is limited in the final third. I agree that Williams should be AWB's back up though rather than Shaw's cover. His right footedness definitely causes issues for us at left back. We can't be keeping this role for Laird as unfortunately he doesn't seem to be able to get fit and I have grave worries about him because of this.

I'd love to see them take a punt on someone like Arthur Zagre at Monaco. He's quick and agile and extremely attacking. A lovely player to watch.

Jesus, give Williams a chance.. He was playing as wing back, I remember Shaw struggled with that position when he first joined us before his injury, It can be a very tricky position for an unexperienced full back. We're not signing any defenders this summer, then CB will probably be the priority next.

No disagreements about Wes or any others. The point is completely different- when the width has to come from full backs you really can't expect a right footed player on left to give us that unless he is equally competent on both foots (Williams is not).

I think this is a low priority. A CB, DM, CM and RF are what needs to be addressed this upcoming window.

Williams is right-footed. He should be cover for AWB, not Shaw. We play him at LB because he played there in U-23s. He's better on the right.

Yeah I know he's right footed, and he's good enough to be our back up LB as he's proven plenty of times this season already. Playing out of position at wing back in a FA cup semi final with his inexperience, no wonder he struggled a bit, that performance had nothing to do with his strongest foot.

I think for backup Williams is good enough. Shaw has been good and considering how we desperately need CB, I don't think we should invest at Full back position this year. We have 2 quite youngster also coming up in Devine and Laird.

Losing to Comeback Winning!
Even-though this is not top most priority nor immediate prior-

This still need to be addressed in the future.

These past two seasons have been good considering Shaw's fitness, but it wasn't great -- he still missed games including the crucial ones and his replacements isn't enough to bring what he can bring. Improve squad depth and introduce squad competitions.

In the future, get a new top LB (still not confirm will be an instant success mind) and let them fight for the spot.

We’re most likely not going to make more than 2 or 3 signings this window. Spots in the squad I’d rather address than a more fitting backup for Shaw than Williams:
- Starting RW
- Starting CB
- Backup RB
- Backup for Matic, someone who is a pure defensive midfielder
- Creative midfielder who can play when we need to rest Bruno
- Backup winger who can have a better impact than James or Lingard
- Another creative midfielder, we only have Bruno and Pogba who can create. Mata, Lingard, Pereira aren’t good enough.

I think that an improvement on WIlliams as a backup for Shaw is probably the last thing we should focus on.

Would like to upgrade Shaw but probably not the priority this season. Williams has been a fine deputy, 1-2 poor games doesn't change that.

The difference on last 2 game was definitely Shaw. If you watched us on our goal fest you see Shaw constantly bombarding forward and putting pressure to opponent left side. Williams is not PL level and the difference is jarring. One of the worst LB performance yesterday from him. Boy vs man shit, he got demolished multiple times. Should have kept Young as backup.

Who is this Nuno Mendes fella the press are linking us with this morning? Can't say I've ever heard of him.

I like him too. I think Pool will get him as competition for Robertson.

Williams is a kid, he's had a good breakthrough season and that shouldn't be halted by another signing.

Fair enough his form hasn't been great post lockdown but he's not alone a few don't seem to have come back firing on all cylinders.

Maybe it's the lack of fans, some feed off the atmosphere, he strikes me like that as he plays with such conviction.

I also agree we need to replace/challenge Shaw, not buy a cover for him. Shaw is a good player, he is far from being a great player. He is prone to injuries and lack of form, then he can struggle with playing too many games after returning from injury and the cycle repeats itself. On top of that, he struggles with output going forward. I like Shaw, an honest player with good concentration in most games, but he can be replaced.

Last season he played a good amount of games, that’s the first and only time during his United-stint. This year it’s back to missing a lot of games and sitting on the injury table when we need him the most. We need players that are available for 35 games every season in the League, even if they’re rested here and there. Injuries happen, it’s impossible to foresee even for the most fit player, but Shaw is going to be injured.

William's is good but he's right footed. I dont want a right footed left back continually cutting in and cramming our central areas, which is what happened yesterday, also because Rashford doesn't go wide either.
A left footed fullback brought in,please. Quite simple.

I think his left foot is quite good considering he is right footed. But it is still not good enough for him to not be halted by it.

I think he needs to be a regular next season (at right back) to really develop. He will not be a regular at Man Utd. A loan would be sensible. I would imagine he would be attractive for a lot of clubs in the Championship too. Hopefully he could come back an challenge AWB or Laird in a year or two.

Laird would be sufficient back up for AWB. A bit like Williams was for Shaw this year.

Unfortunately, I think we will keep Williams and he will not develop like he could have. I also think that he will struggle to make an impact. He will just be one more number in the squad, but not add much quality in attack or defence. I really like him as a player, and I think he can be a Man Utd-player long term, but I do not think he is good enough currently. And I do not think he will develop sufficiently playing 1 500 - 2 000 minutes or so.
