Genuinely think we shouldn't be going for young talents that may turn out well or may not (Lindelof type signings!). We need a complete centre back that will instantly improve us, like Koulibaly (seems city bound), Hummels, Skriniar etc. Someone of that ilk

£50m on another maybe talent isn't what we need in defence right now.
This! It's why I'm against the likes of Konate Upamecano Dias and this Torres guy. I'd rather we forget CB and spend 40m + on another position of priority than spend it in CB on another maybe talent.

My only concern with Skriniar is that he lacks pace and Maguire needs someone who has that to get him out of trouble

Ah. Some link finally. Even better than Maguire on the ball. Wand of a left foot. But I haven't seen much of his defending or speed (not even on highlights videos) so hard to assess. The way they focus on his ball playing makes me suspect that's his main strength. I recall asking about him and someone who knows La Liga well replied to say he was quite a passive defender, maybe even worse than Lindelof in that regard, and not great in the air despite his height. I'll have to trust the scouts are doing their work.

Well, that, and he's been pretty shite this season too.

Lindelof was never as good as Upamecano or Konate and Benfica fans also rate Dias higher. Lindelof was never in the same bracket IMO.

My wit's end
I don't like the way he spells his name. It's either missing an L at the end or a T at the beginning.

What's the obsession with defenders who like to fly into tackles, it usually due to a lack of positional soundness

Nah, we need a centre back. I’d say it’s top priority alongside a defensive mid and right wing IF we want to challenge for the title in the next couple of years.

The thing is CB is one of 3 crucial positions we need to try and address in this window, one way or another.

Yep, recall Fergie's comments about Maldini.

I haven't watched & followed Villarreal so frequently like I used back then 15 years ago of the Senna, Riquelme, Forlan era. So can't really tell how is this guy so highly rated. The whoscored rating gives him low rating, could be down to team's performance.

However, his case is slightly different to Upamecano & Konate. His injury record shows he's not an injury prone, not as bad as the two France men. His release clause is 45m pounds. So it's 5m-10m cheaper (not much). He also already made his first appearance in international team.

Never watch him but based on his YouTube, looks like Laporte to me. Same height, very composed, good on the ball & his distribution, physically looks the same when Laporte was at his age (not muscular). Defensively, need to see more. Still risky signing for one season La Liga player but I can understand why we are in for him.

I don't think Chelsea will be in for this guy, my Chelsea fans mate told me they are prioritising left back & goalkeeper first, we could be the favourite to get him if we act fast. I think this depends on how much we'll pay for Sancho and how much we can sell our players. Do they want Bailly back?

He clocked a top speed which is fair, but does he actually have the pace to cover for Maguire's turtle behaviour?
No point signing another Lindelof.

Ohh ffs don’t be telling me he’s weaker than Lindelöf

I think the idea is to compliment. Skriniar while good is also slow. Don’t disagree with your general point though.

Yeah makes a very good point but like you say we need to bring in someone who compliments Maguire

I want Pau Torres.

I've never seen him play.

But we're owed a Villareal signing after missing out of Marcos Senna and never signing Juan Roman Riquelme
Oh Riquelme, what a player he was....not sure he would have fit in to the premiership mind you

The left footed LCB is very hard to come by so Ive been wondering if we end up for Pau Torres, Salisu, martinez, Ake. Not exactly bombarding with talent.

I wouldn't be surprised if one of this ends up true.
Hasnt Salisu signed for Southampton or agreed terms at least?

In my view he is the next best defender to come out of Spain after Laporte, he in fact plays very similar to Laporte, and he is more agile.

Dont agree, for starters Hummels and Skriniar are not blessed with great pace which is one thing we do need. Hummels is of course an excellent defender, personally dont get th ehype over Skrniar whatsoever, especially as the right partner for Maguire.

What we do need to do is simply sign a quality centre back, it doesnt have to be a name. I think our scouts have failed miserably there or somebody has. Rojo was jsut average, Lindelof never even looked very good at Benfica when I watched him. Bailly looked a good signing and was decent in his first season, but of course injuries have hardly helped him.

I think Konate and Upamecano look like very good signings....my only personal concern with both of them is whether they have the organisation and intelligence to lead the defence, which of course you would get from someone like Hummels. With our budget this season and his age and cost, Koulibailly has to be a no no, that is the kind of player or a Romagnoli that we should in my opinion have signed last summer along with one of these younger talents.

You watch him? Could you give us a load down about his style of play? Would be fit next to Maguire?
