18 year old Portuguese LB who has been linked to United for several months is being strongly linked to us today by Ojogo, who are the most reliable outlet out of the big three, and they're are reporting that United are looking to sign him and will likely get him below the release clause which is reported to be €45m.

They also report that Solskjaer isn't convinced by Brandon Williams and wants someone better to challenge Shaw for the LB spot.

I'm glad we are looking to get someone in as I've always said we needed a proper left footed LB to challenge for Shaw's spot.

Find it hard to believe ole doesn't rate Williams
Same. But he might prefer him on the right side as an understudy to AWB.

Is this Mendes any good? My excitement is tempered by the dashed hopes of Dalot.

He’s played two more games this season than Dalot did the season we signed him. What could go wrong here?

If we are signing him then it's clear with physical pressure to go up and down the flanks you would need to rotate the full back position something Pochetino also done during his early years with Spurs.

He's very good and some even desribe him as being among the very best LBs for his age group in Europe. I think this seems like maybe a opportunistic move by United to exploit the financial uncertainty at SCP which suits both clubs.

Buy him and loan him out for another season. Makes no sense, he won't play a lot here if he isn't good enough to start

Sounds

I dream of an actual complete full back.

Perfect . Williams is a right back and let him compete with AWB.

Portugal has produced plenty of nice full backs (I do rate Dalot btw) and hope this guy also makes the list.

@SportingCP96 doesn't rate him enough, atleast for now.

They said the same about Dalot, but right-sided...

Which is true and United beat of alot of clubs to secure his signature. But sadly it hasn't worked out.

Mendes is from a academy that we've greatly benefited from too in the past. He's also defensively very good for a 18 year old and just as good going forward from what I've read.

Wtf? He's played like 5 games for us and he's playing as a wingback in a 5 at the back formation which United don't play. I like him a lot, the potential is obvious but it's way too soon for rumours about him leaving to start nevermind him actually leaving.

Dalot was stupid to go as soon as he did, if he had stayed at Porto he'd be a starter for them by now and he'd have time to evolve and leave to a top club when he was ready to do so. No point for these players to leave to a top club before they're ready to play every week and then let their talent rot away without any development.

Whether this signing happens or not this point is spot on, the physical demands of the fullback role in the modern game is evident, look how spent AWB is. you need two options for both fullback roles, now I thought Williams and Laird would be the backups but maybe Ole and the coaches have concerns over either/both.

Luke Shaw has zero competition at LB as things stand. This could make alot of sense.
Brandon Williams is more than capable of competing with Luke Shaw in my opinion. Also, we've got to fix RW, CM, DM, CB and possibly even an out and out ST before we can even think of getting a backup to Shaw. I'm not sure if this makes any sense in this transfer window. Unless he's the second coming of Roberto Carlos, I see no reason in spending money over there right now.

I'd send Williams on loan and keep Laird due to Laird being comfortably more talented.
I think that would make sense if Laird could get through any type of sustained period without an injury. However, that isn't the case so I think it would be silly. On the other hand, AWB never seems to get injured.

Solskjaer will know what needs to be prioritized in the up coming window. And all those roles you're mentioning won't happen in one window.

If the recruitment team feel Mendes is a player that has huge potential and they can get him for a corona discount, then they should. I'm a huge believer in our youth and have followed the fortunes of our younger players for a very long time and I still can't make out if Williams is a longterm United player or someone that will have a decent career elsewhere. But i'm pretty sure he won't be challenging Shaw in the immediate future.

Shaw needs competition and someone capable of rotating with him without any drop off in quality. Williams has a good way to go to be any more than a squad player here and there’s a very decent chance he’ll never be as good as shaw. You would hope this lad could eventually be the type of signing that pushes shaw to another level or out of the team altogether and I say that as a fan of shaw and Williams.

We should take the Leicester approach and sign the proven LB, Alex Telles from Porto seems a better option for that money.

Buying a youngster from a lower league that has barelely played doesnt seem as a great idea specially after Dalot.

Dalot was signed by Mourinho and his personal scouts. This lad will be signed by Solskjaer and the club scouts.

Does it makes a difference?

Nuno has less than 600 minutes played in the portuguese league, to pay around 45M for him would be extremely risky to say the least.

It does matter if you see the talent in our youth team.

He's been scouted from his youth team days and will be seen as a big prospect for the role. And nowhere does it say he will cost €45m. I wouldn't be surprised if he costs 10m due to the financial constaints on SCP.
