I've heard from a journalist that Phelan is viewed as our DoF internally. Not sure if it was Whitwell/Mitten or a journalist on Stretford Paddock.

But it was definitely in the last week. So he's the likely appointment. Then again it could have been one of SP crew.

Oh god, it will be "what does Mike Phelean actually do" all over again

More bullshit PR in case we miss out on CL. Even if we did, it'd be a similarly incompetent appointment like our manager.

Every summer...
Without fail.

I posted it just cos its not really a summer without 'sources' rolling this one out.

When I saw this I immediately started worrying that this will be their excuse when we don't sign anyone: waiting for a new sporting director to assess the squad before making deals.

We will all look silly when Rangnick is announced in two weeks.

It was reported in the past that United had put the appointment of signing a Sporting director on the back burner.

Nicky Butt is a ideal candidate for the role IMO.

I'll save myself hours of trawling through dogshite articles this summer, note to self:
  • DoF - we will be linked with many names, mostly ex players and inevitably the interview with VDS will resurface where he points out he's actually CEO of Ajax and not a DoF and then an article will come out saying he wants Woody's job.
  • Bale - this will reignite with a gusto given he can play RW and Real don't want a fee. I doubt we're even considering him.
  • Lozano - someone will do this purely for banter
  • Pogba's brother will say he wants to leave, he'll be pictured with Zidane on holiday, twitter will meltdown, he'll then sign a new deal here.
  • Sancho to United will run all summer with no deal being agreed, we'll end up with Ryan Frasier on a free

Even if this was true, it'd just show incompetency. A director of football at a successful club would've done most of his work for this summer's transfers already.

Lets assume it is true, any chance it is Solskjaer?

- Is basically a sporting director today with a few extra tasks,
- Would be difficult for the board to sack in terms of PR, could be clever to move him up,
- Probably complement Woodward and Judge well,
- Co-operates well with the board («easy to handle»),
- Our general play has been poor. There is very little improvement in a few areas (ref «shape of midfield», «how we build from the back», «how we press»)

Could be a wise move from OGS too. A sporting director could last for years! A manager/coach? Three-five years maybe.

The briefing is doing the rounds...
"But United will stick to their transfer committee model after success under Solskjaer"

Just take the manager/head coaches seat at the table and give it to the DOF. That's how it should work

Without fail, every single time the fire approaches Woodward's ass (failure to qualify for the CL), the DOF story gets steam.

It's beyond parody at this point.

STOP LOOKING TO APPOINT A DOF. JUST APPOINT SOMEONE ALREADY AND MAKE THE ANNOUNCEMENT. OR STFU!
