I don’t believe this for a moment, Ed has shown to be totally incompetent to the football side of the club. This should have happened 5-7 years ago.

Saying that, Ragnick would be so good. We can only dream. Of course, if it will be someone, it will be some ex-United player getting an internship for a role they have zero experience.

Just curious: Why would Ragnick be so good? Is he better and more proven than the usual names being thrown around for DOF these past 3 years?

Rangnick would want full control over everything. Its the reason why he had issues with AC Milan especially with Maldini.

I have no problem with that. I'm sure if he was brought in he would be aware he will be working with Ole anyway.

Ole and Rangnick will work better together then Maldini and Rangnick. AC Milan have very limited funds, they are very much set in their ways and they are less open to external influences then we are. Also Ole loves young talent as well

However Rangnick is pretty much LVG in terms of compromising with his philosophy. I can see him clash with anyone who doesn't fully share his philosophy including ole and Woodward

At some point, United will appoint a Director of Football/Technical Director and even after he's done his first press conference nobody will believe it.

Rangnick looks to me like someone who has a very clear idea of what he thinks is right and doesn't really want to compromise on that. Which is why it makes sense to hire him if you want to (re-)build your club's structure, but for United that moment probably was somewhere around Moyes/Mourinho. It would be surprising for Woodward to try an internal overhaul after the club seems to have stabilized recently.

I don't think anyone really cares anymore about a DOF. As long as we are recruiting well, selling the deadwood, working towards a dedicated football philosophy and not ignoring the academy.

Woodward is doing a fine job on the financial front, so that's sorted.

Why bother with a DOF.

The only one I feel would fit in nicely is VDS, given his experience of playing with us and being CEO of Ajax

Any sensible DOF who have good sense of responsibility will be at odds with how United is run at the top level management. Doubt Ed and co will surrender big portion of their "power".

The first DOF in the future will likely be someone who is a yes-man.

Anyway, with Ole, Phelan and the rest back, United is operating with a clear identity, sufficient structure and good process, so getting a DOF that will change the whole structure may be counter-productive. We need a DOF type that is more on to improving the current system of management and not revolutionize the whole thing.

Maybe we could do with someone to negotiate transfers/contracts instead of Judge but apart from that our only other issue post Fergie has been stability. With us jumping from one footballing style to another and losing the likes of Nani, Hernandez, Zaha, Rafael, Vidic, Evra, Ferdinand etc for peanuts and without a long-term plan.

A Sporting Director from within is the way forward because it'll provide stability. And as a club we'll pull in the same direction from the scouts to the coaches etc to bring in players who suit a progressive forward thinking play style. We don't need Rangnick.

United appoint a DoF, or Mike Ashley sells Newcastle. Which one happens first.

Nonsense, shows more uncertainty and lack of direction. Leaking through press just before transfer opens. I can't stand Ed Woodward, so clueless.

What makes you think he will be a good DOF when he's never done that role? DOF at Ajax is Overmars so bringing in VDS with no experience is not the way we should be heading.

Has any one worked out if the news “leaks” about DOF coincide with shareholder calls or some stock market shenanigans of some sort?

Isn't this kind of leak usually following on some bad results/news? Should we be concerned that something somewhere went wrong?

This sort of leak normally would occur after missing out on UCL football. But this time it's happened when we were in a strong position to qualify.

Red Bull Leipzig is run in such a good way. They came out of nowhere and now are one of the best teams in Europe (schooled Spurs in UCL this season).

He has been leading them.

I can kind of understand Ed's reluctance to bring in a person seeking full control of football operations. He still has some bad taste in his mouth from giving Van Gaal and Mourinho all the power on recruitment and seeing a divide emerge between the club's scouting network and the manager bringing his own network which works at odds at times. I don't doubt Ragnick would want to rely on his own cultivated relations in the football world than be a part of whatever it is Ed has been building.
