Jose Mourinho | Spurs manager

At every club he's been at since 2002, Mourinho has won trophies. Will he win one at Spurs?

Anyone read his comments about Kane?

He's only a special player at Spurs, anywhere else he's not

So it looks like Mou got us 4th place! Interesting fact is when we finished 6th with Mourinho we had 66 points and 19 wins. If we win our two remaining games with Ole we will end up 3rd with 68 points and 19 wins.
The big difference being that this season has had an upward trajectory. Which is what you’d want to see from a manager who deserves another crack. If we’d played this season in reverse order I don’t think many would want Ole to get a chance that Mourinho didn’t get.

When he took over Spurs were bottom half but only 3 points off 5th. 25 games later they're 4 points off 5th. Was still very early in the season where actually Bournemouth were two points clear of Spurs in 7th place. Brighton were also 8th. Spurs were 1 point clear of Man. United when the final whistle went for Poch's last game.

Now where he was unlucky was losing Son to injury just after you beat Man. City and us so you had virutally nothing upfront and took 1 point from Chelsea, Wolves and Burnley which killed top 4 dead (and also lost to Norwich in the cup which looks a terrible result now).

It's been hit and miss. 6th is the minimum unless the claim is Arsenal suddenly have a better squad.

They are starting to look good at home and we know Mourinho generally builds formidable home records when he's at his strongest.

I’m very interested to see if he manages to outperform us over the next couple of seasons before he gets sacked because this is first time he’s been at a club in the PL that is not richer than us. On a level playing field let’s see how good he is I think Spurs glory days ended with Poch and they didn’t even win anything.

Kane has scored 13 goals in 18 games under Jose so far. That's not bad at all considering he clearly hasn't been fit for a lot of them. I think he will score a ton next season.
I think he'll score a lot too. I fully expect him to smash 20 again providing nothing terrible happens in terms of injuries. And it'll be seen as a great season because it comes after two consecutive seasons of narrowly missing 20 in the league due to injuries.

The reality will be that he still won't be fulfilling his potential while scoring 21 or 23 or whatever though. It'll look good but people will conveniently ignore the fact that his GPG will be lower than his worst seasons and that he's really a 30+ goal striker in a team that's even halfway dominant. He put up 29 (in 30 matches!) and then 30 the next season in a Spurs team that was great but not dominant in the manner of a Liverpool or City. It's not unreasonable to suggest that prime Kane, in a team that matches his own ability, would be chasing new single-season PL (or even first division) scoring records every season.

So while I agree that he'll be scoring at a rate most strikers could only dream of, and probably enough to win the golden boot in most years, he won't be hitting the heights theoretically available to him in a team that doesn't shut up shop after halftime or 60 minutes. He'll want to complete hat-tricks in the last half-hour of games, while Jose has everyone else parking the bus and not attempting to score (see also: the Leicester match). A defensive manager will never be a good fit for a player willing to sacrifice silverware for scoring records.

The glory days of beating Ajax of course, since that Ajax team was clearly the best, most exciting football team of this millennium. Just ask Ajax fans. I will have to endure at least another decade of "we're a world class team we almost made the finals".

That was a wonderful moment but sadly those type of moments have been few and far between in my 35 years+ of supporting Spurs. I want silverware.

If Chelsea and us make it to next season CL via the league, we owe him a lot of gratitude. Did us and Chelsea a massive favour by beating Leicester 3-0. Thanks Jose, I always know that you're the best manager in the world! :p

There seems to be a bit of a consensus that Mourinho has had a bit of a poor effect on Tottenham, but I saw this form table of points from when he took over Tottenham. It shows that, even with our great run of results, we are acutally only three draws up on Spurs over the period that Mourinho has been in charge. They have actually been on top four form since Mourinho was appointed.

Goals are actually only 6 less than what we have scored, even though they are supposed to be merely defensive, and their defence has conceded more. Without Kane and Son getting injured, it probably would have been closer to ours. Overall, Mourinho seems to have done a better job than people are giving him credit for.

They have been doing well but Jose still has problems to fix in that Spurs team. I really do get an Arsenal vibe looking at the Spurs squad, glaring problems that most likely will not be fixed.

Aurier needs to be a squad player or sold, should not be a starter for any team wanting top 4 and CL football. Same goes for Winks, good squad player, doesnt have the necessary physical attributes for a Jose style holding midfielder. He needs a backup to Kane, the games will pile up and we will see another season of injuries for Kane if he is expected to play every single match. A replacement for Vertonghen who is leaving come the end of the season is needed. Although Spurs have a lot of young CB's who could potentially step up, Foyth, Tanganga, are either of them left footed or comfortable on the left of defence?

I don't think they ever replaced Eriksen, Lamela feels like a square peg in a round hole there, and Lo Celso has a lot of developing to do. Alli feels more like a secondary striker role suits him better than say as the creative hub in the offensive third.

In a regular season you would have options, but as it stands Spurs, and most other teams for that matter, can probably only afford to bring in one player. I think most Spurs fans would be over the moon if they could pull off a swap plus cash deal for Hojbjerg and get Aarons from relegated Norwich.

What about quality in attack, structure, good performance, patterns of play?

Before anyone quote this post to come up with some sort of different replies, don't even bother. I need answer from this poster, interested to hear his take on this.

The turn around is massive from the start of the season. Their defensive play has seen marked improvement. They conceded in 11 of 12 games (17 goals conceded - 1.4 per game) at the start of the season. This has been the main focal point of this season: fixing the defence. It was a necessity as they were shipping goals left, right, and centre.

It wasn't miraculously fixed because he joined; they still conceded 13 goals in the next 10 games (1.3 per game), which is actually a marginal improvement. Teams are finding it far harder to get through their defence. They have been looking more and more comfortable recently in defence, though, there are still blunders. Since lockdown, the concession has dropped to 6 goals in 8 games (0.75 per game) with 4 clean sheets.

They still have issues in terms of games where they hold the majority of the possession (Sheffield Utd and Bournemouth), which is almost exactly like we were in the first half of the season. They need new midfielders as there is no one there that is really all that good at creating chances. Lamela is truly awful at creating anything; the number of chances he messes up is astronomical. NDombele seems to have severe fitness issues, which makes him almost unplayable (Not sure you can base your team around a player who seems to only be able to play 50 minutes per game). The only one with any promise seems to be Lo Celso.

They are turning into a good counter-attacking side. They break with pace and have been causing massive troubles for their oppositions. It still needs work but it is a promising step forward. Their midfield needs a massive overhaul in the summer; if they accomplish this then I think they will be a far more dangerous team next season than people will expect.

The truth is, they could have beaten us in the first half of the match after lockdown, but Lamela could not make two simple passes to put Kane and Son through on goal for a one-on-one with De Gea. The likelihood is that at least one of those would have been a goal. Getting a proper creator will have a massive impact on their game, both on the counter and in possession., particularly with Kane (who seems to be regaining form) and Son in attack.

I think they have been slightly underestimated because of that period where their results took a downturn when they lost both Son and Kane. Massively unlucky to lose both attackers at the same time, leaving them with Bergwijn (promising), Fernandes, and Moura (wildly inconsistent). They may very well have been in with a chance of top four if that did not happen, after all they are only 4 points behind Leicester even with the awful start and that period.

Actually it's amazing how we can spin the performances depending on whether we like the manager.

Spurs will not have the money to overhaul their midfield. And it's Spurs, come the last hour of deadline day after not signing anyone they will be trying to push a player swap(Walker Peters) plus cash deal for Hojbjerg over the line. Not sure why they dont keep Walker Peters, id imagine just about anyone at RB would be a better option than Aurier. A training cone would probably be about as useful defensively, give away fewer penalties in the box and accrue fewer red cards.

I often look at our recruitment strategy and shake my head. But we are light years in front of Spurs, how many midfielders do they have now? And their midfield is still gash, so they are looking to bring in Hojbjerg. No DoF so just a scatter gun approach to buying players, bought Bergwijn when they really needed a backup striker for Kane. Hell Bergwijn had to play a game up top as a striker. Brought in Fernandes for, reasons?

Im not saying either Bergwijn or Fernandes are bad players, just that they were not what was needed in terms of glaring problems with the squad.

I don't see any of those things personally. I think they were always a decent counter attacking side, they have plenty of pace, and certainly played much better fluid attacking football under Pochettino when they broke with purpose. They seem hesitant and devoid of both confidence and ideas right now. Sometimes if their back line (and Lloris) holds up, they will grind out a game and win by a goal. Their transfer window will be interesting to see.

I was wrong about Jose, he clearly still does have what it takes to be a top manager - it takes a special type of mind to work out that playing extra games would give you more points.

I guess his point is that the injuries stopped them earlier. Or that Corona was a problem for them.

It's obvious what he's actually claiming, though.

I feel we'll see a "decent" second season from him, as we saw with us (second was OK; relative to what he spent and the youth we had available, no, but relative to how José's been, it was OK), then the tears will flow. We'll see how much poison Levy allows him to create this summer with the budget. Gonna be a fun watch

Corona saved them. They were terrible before restart and had Kane being injured. Not only it allows them to stop their poor form but also give them more time to get Kane & Son back from injury. We would have smashed them if we actually playing before the pandemic. Talking about injuries, we also had some and Pogba's long injury definitely one of them.

We'll see what he can do next season. I think he can do well if Kane can stay fit. He can finish top 4 or if he can't then I can see Mourinho takes the Europa League trophy for the CL spot. Kane & Son are not some young players, they are in their prime age. The guy doesn't coach & improve attackers, he let them do their own things, Kane & Son are more perfect for him than Martial & Rashford. He can focus on strengthen midfield & defense now. Whether Levy can keep feeding him money to replace their current average players & potentially the new deadwood players that Mourinho will bring remain question mark.

He's done a decent job considering where they were you have to give him credit for that.

Nah, hope he then turns it around in the nick of time for them to finish top 10 and for him to keep his job. Rinse and repeat. About time he breaks his 3-year cycle.

I’m sure Amazon paid him well to act like that and give them something to work with for the final episode.
