Thought he was our best player against Leicester.

After all this time I still don't know what to think of him.

I suppose I reckon he's just.. decent. You'd have to go out and spend a lot wisely to replace him, it wouldn't be an easy thing to do. But I also feel like yeah maybe he should be replaced.

He's that annoying level between obviously good enough and questionable.
I think both Maguire and Lindelof individually aren’t that good, just decent, but they add a few things that we have missed in defence. Mainly these are consistency (not injured often) and communication. Both communicate with each other and everyone else well. This makes us better as a unit. If we want to take the next step up defensively, we can improve them but our priority should definitely be the keeper, preferably someone who is also consistent and vocal.

Personally I thought Matic was outstanding today - but he just doesn’t have the energy to play every game. When he plays like this he makes the CBS look better than what they are - hence no table tennis across the 6 yard box.

this is partly down to de gea who, unfortunately we need to replace - again despite having a decent game.

The opposition should not look confident against us and the ball should not get near our penalty area so easily nor should it take so long to distribute from the back. The front 4 can’t do much more than what they do - but we are hardly making it easy for us and let’s hand it to Bruno, Rashford, mason and martial for being the stars who got us over the line. I like Williams and Maguire but the jury is out on wan bissaka, Lindelof, Pogba and season gea for me

we need 4 or 5 players and that includes a specialised DM to cover for Matic and a tenacious composed and pacey CB to partner Maguire. No more mistakes please. Real or Barca would address these problems in a summer! We, Man Utd are the most patient fans in the world but we don’t need to be. Let’s not waste our time being Kind to Decent players who simply are not good enough!

Lindelof is always waving his arms for no reason at all. Waved his arms like a lunatic running forward then misplaced a pass, it was symptomatic and summed up most of his style and appearances this season.

He reads the game and anticipates really well, he doesnt get caught out of position often, if he can add some pounds and strenght I have no doubt he will be one of the top 5 CBs in the world.

please tell me who the other 5 are who are better because we need one at least to replace him...

By the way, in case you needed reminding, we are Manchester United FC - we are not a nursery school or gymnasium for players. He has been here for ages. Look at Bruno - comes in and bosses it. We need more of the same

we have no time to waste!

Usually a strong critic of his, but he was solid yesterday. Didn't let the pressure of the game faze him and defended well, few dangerous low balls into the box that he read exceptionally well.

I think he's grown over the season. There are still obvious flaws in his game, but I'd be happy with him as a squad player, and not a guaranteed starter. I think Maguire has had some blips here and there, but defending set pieces he's been instrumental, cleaning up long punts, shepherding the backline and he's shown leadership. And made himself available throughout the whole season. Him being England's number one defender has benefitted him too in tricky ref calls, which is to our benefit, being perfectly honest.

I'd say overall Maguire is a 7.5 this season and Lindelof 7. We still need a top class defender in that backline, and someone who compliments both of them, i.e. left-footed, quick, intense and loves defending.
Good post. Fully agree with everything. He’d definitely be a reliable squad player and I think he’ll improve further if there’s genuine competition for the CB positions.

I rate him, always have. Seems others on here don't though. If you were to put a mobile, quick, destroyer DM in front of them, Maguire and Lindelof would look far better imo.

Currently, we get bypassed in midfield far too easily, yet they still have one of the best defensive records in the league

Don't bother. I put stats about his pace, put some examples where he was not outpaced by pretty fast players, some quotes from his teammates and coaches....but myth is there. Unbelievable really.
Can you repost the stats on his pace, I would be interested to see them.

I totally agree that he has a decent pace. He is not fast, but he can keep up with most players, he kept up with Vardy who has pace to burn. Obviously, his good positioning helps him to have the headstart, but he is definitely not a slow player, and there is not such a thing as lack of pace when it comes to him.

I loved how he smashed that cnut Vardy near the touchline, more of that Victor, show some fecking aggression and let them know you are here. Yesterday was one game in which I must say loved how he defended. Long may it continue.

I would say he's a typical top-4 position defender and he will probably never be any better (or worse) than that. You can still win the league with him in the first 11, if you have exceptional players on most other positions. The problem is that outside of Bruno, when he's not completely run dry, we don't have any players that are consistently exceptional.

But it's also not easy - we have had 26 signings since SAF and the only one that is even close to being a success in his first season outside of Bruno is Zlatan. And he's is an experienced wayfarer that was a success on the field in his first season in every club he ever joined. I doubt there are that many player that can guarantee that outside of Messi, Kross, Lewandovski or Neymar currently.

Lindelof is better at everything when it comes to ball at the feet. Passes, first touch, dribbling, you name it. Even though he’s far from world class. I don’t know why Maguire does everything. If it’s down to instructions from the manager then fine. He can’t be blamed. Could also be the opposition press that let Maguire do those things. But if it’s a mentality thing then maybe Lindelof is not cut to play at this club. He must start to take responsibility at some point and not just keep even things he’s better at simple.
It’s probably a mix of instructions and mentality/ game style. But he has moved a lot more forward the last 6-7 games and I hope it continues. He’s much better at it than Maguire.
I agree he looked good today but let’s not kid ourselves. I thought Matic was outstanding and covered for both the centre backs.

Fine, most players stepped up today especially the the back four - they had to, but it doesn’t mask the deficiencies shown across the season. Anyone who thinks mAguire and Lindelof is a partnership made in heaven or even one that can carry us to a sustained title challenge is kidding themselves.

Plus we have no back up in central defence. I’m not saying we sell Lindelof but he should be 3rd or 4th CB.

let’s make it crystal clear. A commanding CB doesn’t just win the ball and play it back to the goalkeeper or knock it out of play. He steps out and gets the ball before it reaches the striker, he mops up at the back and leaves the striker on the floor then brings it out of defence, is never done for pace, scares the opposition and wins it in the air without much effort- Rio, vidic, Johnsen, Stam and dare I say it Smalling (Who is a much better defender and far scarier to play against)
please tell me who the other 5 are who are better because we need one at least to replace him...

What you write makes no sense. First, there is no CB at United, at least not Maguire, Lindelof or Bailly, who win balls and knock them out of play. They are very possession minded.

And you can’t expect to buy a team player by player. Great teams must develop players. Sure, once in a while there is a success like Bruno, but that’s not how it works.

To replace Lindelof is not easy. There is never a guarantee that the new player would work better with Maguire. To be honest I don’t even know who that person would be.

Huh, i was defending him in many threads so i can't remember where i talked about that.
In short; he was our fastest player against Wolves in one game. During Jose era he was also fastest in one game (Saints i think). It is one game but if you are slow, you can't be fastest in any game, right?
He also was 13th on tests which Lukaku leaked last year. Faster than Bailly and Tuanzebe for example.
He was not outpaced by Vardy or Origi in head to head duel. Etc...etc...
As i said; one huge myth

We should add this to our transfer requirements.

A player that doesn't wave his arms.

Him and Greenwood looked like the only players calm under the pressure of yesterday. I think Greenwood got a bit carried away tracking back, probably why Lingard came on for him, but their composure on the ball was superb and Lindelof shut out the leagues top scorer. Great game from him.

You do understand why he waves his arms, do you?
Every time he drives the balls forward his teammates just stand still and watch instead of making runs.

Also, read alot on caf about replacing him and make him 3rd, 4rd choice.
He's 26, been regular for 2 season here and swedish international.
Doubt he's going to do a Darmian and accept that, he's not among the best CB in the world but he can easy be a starter for other top teams so no reason for him to stay (if man utd doesn't refuse to sell).

I mean I don't get the question marks still over him? He's not brilliant, he has his weaknesses but he's also reliable and consistent. I always feel against teams that play football he plays well. The Leicesters of this world etc.

Against the likes of Burnley and Chris Wood, he'll struggle. However, I think if we're upgrading on him we'll have to shell out a hell of a lot of money to do so, because he's still a good, experienced player.

The likes of people on here saying we should replace him with either of the young CB's from RB Leipzig are crazy. We're not in a position to replace a known quantity with a young CB. The money we spend to get someone ideal for Maguire has to be a nailed on success, that's why I'm happy to wait and stick with Lindelof until someone is available.

As a defensive unit, AWB, Maguire, Lindelof and Shaw have been good this season. Second only to Liverpool in goals conceded, and I guarantee if we scored more goals this season and turned those draws into wins, there wouldn't have been as much scrutiny on the defense. Early on, every goal was picked apart from a defensive perspective, every mistake highlighted while we were toothless in attack. Sometimes you need your forwards to bail you out, like against Bournemouth. We didn't see that at all early on in the season.

I think that @romufc was just sarcastic. This season we had a game on Caf; who will find biggest flaw about Lindelof. Waving arms is latest

He won’t get the plaudits but he’s actually had a fantastic end to the season. Yes he’s made some mistakes but his overall game has been very solid now for awhile. I’d still look to bring in another CB but it’s not a foregone conclusion he would be beaten out.

Just like how Maguire being slow is a myth?

This was posted last season when Manutd and City were linked with Maguire. Top speed is not of much use, it's how quick they are off the mark is what counts and those extra few seconds are important for both attackers and defenders.

I don't think anyone would believe Maguire being faster than Smalling.

Excellent again yesterday, was Lindelof. I’m a huge fan but I wish he bulked up a bit and was more physically imposing. If he added strength to his game, in addition to his other attributes, he would be really a top-class modern-day centre-back.

The last few pages are the most bipolar in Caf history. Due to the huge investment in Maguire the player and "brand " Lindelof is a squad CB long term imo, the new Evans.

Very underrated. He's played a big part in our excellent clean sheet record.

He's not top level (Title race, CL race), though and I wonder if he ever will be. I suspect Ole will be content with his defensive line this summer and instead invest elsewhere.

I agree he might not be the best CB, but I can tell you he is better than some of the CB's you see out there.
He isnt going to be a Darmian, he will still get game time, we have to play PL and CL games along with all the cup games.

Everyone keeps saying he is suited to European games, well why wouldn't he be suited to CL games?

Was great yesterday, and loved the way he took Vardy out after all his non-existent fouls and throwing to the ground.

I agree :) That my point, his to good to accept to be just a squad player.
Atm he would easy start for the rest of the pl teama except liverpool and city imo.
So no point for him to stay if he's not first choise to partner Maguire.

I do not think we will sell him because Ole knows he can do a job there and he is always fit.

If we have 3 fit CB's, they will get plenty of games on rotation.

Who knows, if we sign a new CB, will he settle in straight away? How many top teams get a CB from abroad that settles in?

That’s the thing. There are not many CBs in the world that would be guaranteed to settle in, if any. I also doubt there are many CBs at that level who would join United and not be more or less guaranteed a place in the starting xi.

I agree on this particular match but otherwise I don’t know what you’ve been smoking
It's not like it's a crazy opinion. I don't think there's much between Maguire and Lindelöf personally, and I can totally see how someone might rate on above the other.

On the other hand, acting as if one has been miles better than the other is a crazy opinion, likely fueled by bias.

He was really really good. Its so strange (well not really given the poster(s)) how people are unwilling to praise him because it will make them look wrong on an internet board (unless its a back handed compliment of course)

He does look stronger and tougher in situations that were an issue before. He matched well against somebody like Vardy which is impressive.

Hey now, I just don't see the point of it. He had a good game, I should have mentioned that too to not upset you. It might seem petty but he has been doing it all season and it just makes the team look insecure. If you have to wave your arms it's already too late and instead of waving you should be making another pass quickly. The opposition reads his nervousness and press the players making themselves available to him after his waving, it shuts off the movement so much quicker and as a result our build up becomes slow and predictable.

I'm aware Lindelof isn't even the biggest ballhogg in defence but it's a continues visual symbol of us struggling to play out from the back, and instead of doing what they're doing the obvious answer for them is to stop taking time and keep the ball moving quicker.. it's an unnecessary thing to do and it doesn't help him or us playing out from the back really.

Geebs is very biased against Lindelof, consistently criticizes him even after good performances. To be fair, that seems to be cause he doesn’t like passive defenders (which Lindelof often is). Same as I might have said that Smalling was bad in matches when he was decent for most people (I just cannot stand players who have poor technique). So a bit of inductive bias on what you expect from the player which makes the opinion quite different to the mainstream ones.
