Interesting. If he's not injured, they obviously don't think he's ready despite our desperate lack of bodies in the middle of the park. Any rumours about clubs who may be seeking a loan move? I'd hope not League one..

If it were to be League one, then that would probably be the most OK option. At least Garner knows what it's like being at a chaotic club :D
I would hope a Championship team would see him as a good option. Though my main preference would be to see him get games here. We've got Fred and Matic, they might very well play every game until someone is bought/fit again. But Garner could at least start getting cameos.

You obviously don’t watch L1 football and are just assuming big name club equals best football.

I watch my local side, Oxford, in L1 and believe me Sunderland would be an awful move for him. Not sure how they’re currently 6th, they are a very poor side. Disjointed and chaotic football, lot of long ball up to Wyke and now Lafferty and the midfield is basically bypassed. Oxford are generally recognised as the best footballing side in L1 by opposing managers but there’s no room there for a loan.

If he’s dropping to L1 then Coventry, Burton or Peterborough knock it around and will suit the better player.

Yes, you are absolutely right. I have no idea about League one teams and the different styles within the league. Hopefully, if he goes out on loan, it will be to a club that allows him to hone his traits.

Not sure about Sunderland, our loan players / sales there post Welbeck have struggled there (Januzaj / Mcnair / Love), and they're just off the back of two successive relegations and are a bit of a mess at the moment. Garner is clearly talented and needs game but a situation like Derby with Frank Lampard & Mount / Tomori is better than a club that's almost ready to get the pitchforks out at their owner (again). Young players need to go to good stable clubs and get played, when they don't it hampers their confidence and development.

He should have at least made it to the bench last night. A perfect match to get some minutes.

Maybe it would be better to loan him to Belgium or the Netherlands for half a season, and if he does well there he could get a loan to the championship next year. The Mount route.

Laurie Whitwell saying Sunderland, Wigan Athletic, Blackpool, Fleetwood Town and Doncaster Rover are all interested in a loan move.

What has happened to this bloke?
He was scoring a lot of goals at reserve level and he did look a bit shaky in the minutes I saw him in the first team but I thought he was really highly regarded at the club.

He's 18. And a Central Midfielder at that. I'd wager nothing has happened, and he's coming along nicely as a player.

He was on pre season with the first team and has played with the first team this year and now he is doing neither.
I am thinking he is not coming along as nicely as what the club expected.

I would wager next year will be his breakthrough season he is very good, just not quite ready yet.

During pre season Garner was found not to be ready yet for first team football, but considering our injury situation we been forced to rely on Garner as a depth option on the bench more then we thought, taking away developing time at U23 level. But there only been 3 games the last 2 months at the U23 level, so its not like there been lots of opportunities for him lately to show form. He got 3 starts in Europa League, that is pretty much as expected I would say.

Said it about a year or so ago, and still feel the same now - especially after seeing him in the first team: he’s got the potential to be a very good ball playing central defender, or a decent midfielder.

Countless elite centre backs - Terry, Ferdinand, Baresi, Kompany etc, even Maguire, all played most of their youth careers in midfield, and I feel like Garner could be the next day. At 19, he should be exclusively used there now, coached as such, and sent on loan next with a view to really developing into the role.

Agreed. He looks physically immature, understandably at his age. I don’t want him going somewhere to get kicked about just yet. He needs experience at first team level somewhere but will get no games here.
I’m not sure if he or anyone knows his best position. He scores goals but generally looks suited to no.6. I could see him as a more mobile Matic when he matures. Holland would be a good move for him just now.

So, what happened to him after the lockdown? Did he stop training with the first team? Personally think replacing Matic is actually our biggest hurdle this summer, would be good to know if the coaches still rated him. Can't be a good sign that he hasn't been around.

I assume it's because we have a lot of midfield players who are higher up the pecking order right now. I would imagine we'll see him on the bench against LASK.

Been training with the team I think but hasn't made a matchday squad which is understandable. Probably needs a loan next season.

@Mr. MUJAC would be interested to get your thoughts on Garner. I’ve not watched much of the reserves recently but I always liked him. Do you think he has what it takes to be a first team player?

If he is unable to play even in the Championship, then it doesn’t look good at all for him :(

Fred and Mctominay haven't even been getting minutes so his chances were always limited.

Undoubtedly needs a good loan next season, and then probably another after that at a higher level if possible.

He's quite young, especially for the type of player he is, and is rated highly by our staff. I think he'll make it here, but mightn't be getting regular game time til he's at least 21.

Loans will help a lot IMO, he's the kind of player that needs game time in the men's game to develop grit and experience

There are loads of clubs in the world, where at his age players (in his position) already play senior football. Look at Camavinga - he is younger yet plays, and not in League One...

At the same time, you say that Garner needs “a loan to League One”... if he is not good enough at least for a starting spot in the Championship club, he might simply be not good enough.

I’m all for sending him on loan; however, it would be much easier if we had an agreement with a club like we used to with Antwerp. I’d love us to find something with a smaller/midtable club in Holland or even Belgium again. Feel Garner (and other youngsters, for that matter) would benefit more from a season in a less physical and more technical league rather than getting turfed down to the Championship or League 1 and playing a gruelling 40+ game season, with a greater chance of getting clattered regularly. Just my two cents, of course. I’m sure there’s a reasonable argument as to why playing in the Championship would be better for his development, too.

And Vardy spent a good portion of his career in none league football, and yet just finished the season as top scorer in the best league in the world.

It's unfair to make comparisons like that. There's so many variables that go into being a successful footballer. He's highly rated by our coaching staff for a good reason. He might not be ready yet, but that doesn't mean he won't be in the future.

Championship hasn't been like that for some time now. It's a technically good league. The likes of Norwich last season and Leeds this season won playing expansive, attacking football.

The club rate him very highly, to the point where I think he’s probably the main reason why there hasn’t been any links to another defensive midfielder and a mew contract for Matic.

Sorry, this bump wasn't meant to be a dig at him at all - I really rate him - just curious that I hadn't noticed him in training. Sounds like he's there so all good! Thanks. Still have high hopes.

Of course, and you could also add Sheffield Utd to that as they played some good stuff when they came up, contrary to uneducated and widespread media belief. If there was a particular Championship side that came in for Garner that intend to play an expansive brand of football then that warrants consideration and could be a good, perhaps even preferable option for him. I’m hesitant to rule out the idea of loaning players down the leagues entirely, as that would not be prudent and would arguably be negligent. It’s merely a preference I have for loaning young players abroad, where possible, as I believe it bodes well for their holistic development. I cannot disagree with your assessment, mind you. Entirely fair.

Unlike forwards and wingers, central midfielders and central defenders don't develop well until they are 20-21. I don't expect him to see anywhere near first team next season or a loan and it is better that way and let him develop physically and mentally without any pressure.

No I didn't?

I think we'll see him come into the men's game in his 20s, he'll just have to be carefully developed. He's not physically dominant like Greenwood, Owen, Rooney etc. so won't explode onto the scene but he's a very, very good footballer

I'd love to see him in a side like Bournemouth, it would depend on who they have to let go, but he could be a cheap option for them for a year to fill a squad space better than most they'd get for the price of a 1 year loan.

Great shout, yeah. That’s exactly the type of team that you wouldn’t mind loaning your young players to, especially in the Championship where you’d expect them to be favourites in most games.

Agreed, but I'm not even sure there are many well developed central defensive midfielders at the age of 21, at least not a top club. Perhaps there are a few.

Bournemouth? Howe seems to have issues integrating any players who he didn’t get promoted to the Premier League with? How many new players have done well for him? You can count them on one hand (and maybe have a finger or two left over).

In an ideal muppet world, we send him to Ajax on loan for 2 years and buy VDB as the 8/10 backup.

Give him time to get used to senior football in a less physically intense environment.

Will we keep him here next season and play him?, perhaps in cup games or giving him the final 10 minutes of a settled game (where we're up 2 or more). I feel he needs to play at least 2000 minutes of competitive football next season. I don't see how he'll get that at OT. This season, Greenwood got 2106 minutes of senior football (Premier League, FA Cup, Europa League). A lot of it before the lockdown. He came back after the lockdown with more muscle and quickly made himself a starter.
