I love Martial but lets address the elephant in the room. Does he score enough goals to lead the line for a side that has championship ambitions? And if the answer is no then will he soon?
There is no elephant in the room, goalscoring isn't on a single player. The question should always be extended to all attackers.

And that question then is more relevant for Rashford, as he's about to (or should) lose a massive chunk of the goals he's scored this season through penalties. Once he loses them to Bruno his record will be under even more scrutiny

I might be a child of the 90s but the sharp end of the attack should hit numbers above 20 in the league. Martial is a great skilled player but is he able to bang them in?

That's fair. I think that he will increase his record and hopefully we will have a better goalscorer/creator than James.

Bruno may score 25 goals next season if he takes all penalties

He scored 17 goals while missing 2 months of football and scored 9 and 10 goals during the last seasons while playing less than half of the minutes available and as a winger. All of that in teams that lacked creativity.

Like I said in previous posts I hope you are right. I love him as a player but I still struggle to see him as a out and out goal scorer. I really hope he proves me wrong.

Liverpool just won the title at a canter with a lead forward who scored 9 goals all season. Martial finished the season with 2 less goals than league champions top goalscorer, without taking penalties, despite missing 2 months of the season.

There isn't really an elephant in the room with Martial. He can score enough goals for sure, but it's not even a necessity to be the top goal scorer if your other qualities bring out the best in the other goal-scoring threats in your team, of which we will have plenty.

So a striker that scores 17 goals in the league without penalties doesn't strike you as an out and out goal scorer? Would you say the same thing about Andy Cole?

I’ve said we need an older PL proven striker as a backup but I was more thinking an Ighalo replacement not this guy who is surely far too good and more importantly far too expensive for that role.

Fellaini gets a lot of shit but to be fair to him he got us some important goals and was a viable plan B at times.
I wasn't joking tbf. Fellaini was the definition of a different option up front and actually very good at what he was asked to do.

Great player and one I would be really excited about having next season. I love watching him at Wolves.

Fair point. Lets see what happens next season and go from there.

They are different types of strikers. Who have the same amount of league goals. Go figure. What do you mean let alone Igahlo?
Was going to reply to that disaster of a post but just didn't have the energy to bother

In 1999 Cole & Yorke were rattling them in, yet fergie still had ole and Sheringham to come on.
I think it’s a school of thought that ole might subscribe to
Wasnt saying we shouldn’t sign Jimenez

Don’t think he will want to come here and play a squad role. He’s 29 and surely wants a first team role. That said this is a nonsense rumour

Coming off a season where we had a front 3 with an average age of 21 being one of the highest scoring in Europe and we're looking to sign Sancho yet this tired narrative still persists :houllier:

Tell me how many goals Liverpool's number 9 scored this season as they ran away with the league...

I think a lot of people expect Martial goal output to increase next year. You mentioned 20 goals in the league yet he managed 17 goals while missing 2 months of football and not taking penalties. Not to mention he did that with mostly no creativity for almost 2/3 of the season. if you factor all that one can easily see him increase his output next year, especially considering he'd have more experience as a CF compared to his first full season as one.

If Ighalo is leaving them this makes sense depending on how much.

Martial seems very capable up top but with us in 4 competitions next year, we can't expect Martial to lead the line in every game.

Rashford isn't composed enough to play as a striker in my opinion and Greenwood is probably still too young to spearhead the attack on his own.

Jiminez is good enough to ease the burden on Martial. Look at the end of this season, Martial played way too many minutes.

I don’t believe this one bit, why would Wolves sell him cheaply? Jimenez is very good in patches in a team playing to his strengths (we don’t, and we wouldn’t) - but obviously he is a much better player than the likes of Ighalo. Makes no sense to buy him, we need better players to challenge for the league. We don’t need him to consolidate our position or fight Chelsea for 3rd, the fee’s not worth it.

Let’s give Martial a whole season of playing with Sancho, Rashford, Fernandes and Pogba and being used to the role seeing as this season was his first as a centre forward after playing wide for pretty much his entire career with us.

I think injury permitting Martial will score 20 league goals at least next season seeing as he scored 17 this season whilst missing a couple of months, it’s rare these days for players to score more than 25 goals in a league season so 20 goals is a good return.

We’re also a team now that shares goals around and I can see Martial and Rashford both scoring 25+ goals each next season and then if Sancho and Greenwood got into high double figures along with Fernandes and Pogba getting involved then we won’t have an over reliance on Martial, we’ve always been a better team when the goals have been shared around rather than relying on a centre forward like we did when RVN was our main striker.
