Seems like he’s definitely off this summer and it’s just a question of who to?

Everyone should note that he is in L’Equipe’s Ligue 1 2020 team of the year.

For under £30m he seems like not a high risk...obviously I would like a world class defender to come in but who is readily available and not commanding an extortionate fee bearing in mind most of our transfer budget is being spent on Sancho.

If we are after a left footed CB then 25m for a 22 year old that was in the ligue 1 team of the season is worth a punt. I mean asides from Pau Torres whose costing 65m now there aren't any decent left footed CBs available

I am anything but a Lindelof fan but anyone who thinks Ole wants to replace him are just not listening to him when he talks about Him or Axel.
What’s he said about Lindelof? Solskjaer also said Sanchez would come back and prove everybody wrong. You can’t take as gospel what he says to the media.

'worth a punt' Umm,no.
I like to think we've stopped taking punts on such players. Christ, even this guy's YT compilation looks average and this is him at his best ?!

We can't keep spending £50 and £60m on players. £25m for this lad seems logical to me. I haven't watched him live, saw a few youtube clips, likes a slide tackle and he has an accurate long pass.

Lille just bought Sven Botman from Ajax, who is a LCB. Said in an interview they told him he's been bought to be a starting player. Gabriel's replacement has been bought then.
So he's not very good at Fortnite

Still think he'll end up at Napoli. Not sure how good he'll be so I'm not really fussed about this transfer. Pau Torres is another guy I have zero idea about. But him being a Spanish player and Barcelona wanting him doesn't sound good for us. So maybe Gabriel is the easier and cheaper option for us.

I've watched most of Lilles Champions League games this season, and he's been pretty good for them. As a signing it makes a lot of sense, as I think K2 is too expensive, and Upamecano has just signed a new contract so a blockbuster CB is unlikely this season.

He's left footed, a strong lad, loves a tackle, and can spread the play quite well. However he will need to up his game if he wants to break into our starting 11. He seems to have to make last ditch challenges too often, and his passing success was only 82% last season in the league, although he did attempt 3.7 long balls per game.

If we sell 2 of Smalling, Jones, and Rojo, he would definitely be a good replacement and at that price it's hard to argue.

Im not convinced about our interest. This smells like when we were supposedly in for Yerry Mina our name just being used

Why do Lille want to sell him though? It feels like they're not making an attempt to keep him.
Besause almost all the french clubs (PSG aside) are looking to buy players on the cheap/or give a chanche to youngsters, develop them then seeking for a resale value.
That's the reality, they haven't the financial power to build a competitive team long term.

Gabriel is everything we wish Lindelof could be. He is good in the air, relatively good pace, goes in for a tackle (more composed, not bailey style), he is very good on the ball; quite tidy with a few long passes here and there, doesn't get bullied by opposition and won't back down from a challenge. He reads the game quite excellently for his age and would provide an excellent left footed partnership for Maguire.

We should be all over this, I don't see him doing worse than Lindelof. He might not pull up any trees from the moment he arrives but given the time and opportunity Lindelof has been given, he should be able to cement his place beside Maguire and we should have a solid CB pair for the next few years. I hope we sign him, 20 million is a steal considering his current abilities and potential.

One of his strengths is aerial duels, what's his passing like?

EDIT: Video gives him 7/10 for passing which is quite good.

Just about to post that myself

A lot more positive things than the Chelsea vid posted earlier. Can certainly ping that ball with his left. Very neat
I think that's a better way to gauge how good he is though. Watching his performance against a premier league side other than just highlights of his best stuff overall

If he was actually meant to replace K2 then we really need to hijack this deal. Specially if K2 is going to city!

Passing looks good, seems to have a AWB style for love of tackling and seems like he's good in the air.

£25M..... let's do it

You just said you hope we don't get Gabriel. What does your hope have to do with Ole's claims? Furthermore none of them are left-footed which Ole is looking for if Ole's word is all we're going after..

He seems to be a talent, but I'm not sure we're really interested. The only links so far have come from Sky, Castles and "ultra reliable voix du nord" who spent most of last summer linking us to Pepe and Soumare

He’s a current player, what do you expect him to say? “Iceman? Haha we call him melty man in the office”

I see your point but if we just took players' performances in isolation, say Bruno against West Ham as an example, we'd be wondering why we bought him!

He didn't have a 'bad' game against Chelsea but given that Chelsea have more quality and experience all over the pitch and he's still only 22, I wonder if we are taking all the criteria into consideration. Just a thought.

Think they're going down the Monaco/Dortmund path of signing young talent for cheap, develop them then sell for a high price. Rinse and repeat. The Angel Gomes to Lille links make sense, getting player for free then sell for 20M+ in a few years to (probably) an English club.

Was thinking the same. If we do buy a CB willing to bet it will be Rodon or Mings

But this guy will be as cheap if not cheaper and looks like he will have a higher ceiling

Mings shouldn’t be anywhere near this level. The crowd couldn’t handle smalling, if we sign Mings.. the horror.. the horror

Wow he’s got some leap on him!

I love a cb who can go and aggressively win the ball. Also seems to have a good left foot in him too
From someone who’s seen him play a lot this season

We’d be well stocked with Maguire, Lindelof, Axel, Bailly and Gabriel.

Suspect he will end up being Koulibalys replacement at Napoli.
