The nerves of the last game compared to the chilled out nature of this one will be a fantastic feeling.

Looking forward to (hopefully) seeing Mengi in particular.
Yup, should be a very nice relaxing game :)

Until Jones starts and we’re 3-0 down in half an hour.

We're up 5-0 is why people want the reserves to play in this match only. People want the first team to play 4-5 days after that which means they would have had 2 weeks rest. So reserves only for this match.
I know were 5 up, but am always wary playing a team of strangers, which is what they will be, could also backfire. I would prefer we played half the first team who could be subbed at half time anyway.

If a team of united players can’t hold a 5-0 goal lead at home against an Austrian team they should all be sacked immediately.

I think we might just be ok with this one.

I agree this should be the case, but we have some dross in reserves. Lets hope you are right.

Absolutely. Especially as imo we should be looking at moulding Scott into our future permanent captain.
Nah. He probably won't ever be a definitive starter here.

He looks to have some leadership capabilities, always gives his best and is a good lad, so I wouldn't mind having him as captain when the big guns are out.

I actually think that Rashford should have become captain when Young left.

Bailly is fine, and I’ll edit Axel out for Mengi. Williams shouldn’t play as we need him for future rounds too. I’m all for the idea of this U23 team like the Astana game but this lot are better than Astana. Remember the meltdown from the Astana loss? Chong was blacklisted instantly.

What’s the latest news on Shaw. I see people in this thread saying he’s injured till next season but where did we hear that?

Dalot is a good attacking wing-back but he's not a full-back. So why play him there when he'll be a defensive liability? I honestly have more confidence in Laird for normal defensive duties.
Bailly - yes - play him if he's fit. Partnering Mengi.
TFM? conceded 5 fouls in the 1½ matches he played against Palace and West Ham. That's a concern because defending set pieces have traditionally been one of United's big weaknesses He needs to be more careful. Hopefully he's just rusty.

The point about this next game is - all we really need to do is defend well. I can't see LASK scoring against us if we play our 2nd best defence.

    LASK
    • Can field 14 good players, including a Brazilian striker 'Klauss'.
    • After the first 11 plus 3 subs the quality drops right off.
    • Will play 5-4-1, changing to 3-4-3 when they have possession.
    • They are athletes and mostly Austrian nationals (only 4 non-Austrians in their squad).
    • They all defend well. None are particularly slow (apart from their Brazilian striker 'Klauss' who is slow). They probably won't start with Klauss.
    • Weaknesses: lack of quality in attack and on the ball. None of them have scary pace.

So no danger of them scoring 5, no matter whom they play?

Don't want to see Dalot at RB and Mata as false #7 again. That will give them an attacking route down our right. They shouldn't even be allowed a sniff. Maybe: Pereira or Lingard at RW, James at LW. No way is there any excuse to put mata, pereira and lingard on the pitch at the same time. That would be a sadistic crime against the fans. Even 2 together is pushing my patience too far.

i think it would be about putting such players 'in the shop window' as well as ensuring no first xi players have to turn up.

That’s the thing. Williams shouldn’t play as we need him for the QF and beyond. Besides, TFM’s fouls could help in breaking up play.

Tbh though, our entire conversation about which defense we should play is irrelevant. They ain’t scoring 5 even if both of us played there

Want to see lots of academy players in this. we will get some idea of what they are like as LASK really should not pose more than about two minutes threat (famous last words)

What do you guys think? Garner, Mengi and Levitt or Pereira, TFM and Lingard? Would be so boring seeing a team with no future: Mata, Pereira, Dalot, TFM, Bailly etc.

    Chong

Mix of experience and youth. Tempted to play Lindelof instead of Bailly as he'd be a better leader for the younger players.

Garner to get minutes please at some point.

If Ighalo starts vs LASK, he may become a player who scored in all 5 of his first 5 starts for Man Utd. Not sure it happened before, actually (so far Ighalo started 4 times and scored in each).

Not eligible. United did not include him in the A list. Here are the players eligible to play:

    A LIST
Eric Bailly, Diogo Dalot, David De Gea, Bruno Fernandes, Fred, Odion Ighalo, Daniel James, Matej Kovar, Victor Lindelof, Anthony Martial, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic, Sergio Romero.

    CLUB TRAINED
Jesse Lingard, Scott McTominay, Andreas Pereira, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Axel Tuanzebe.

    ASSOCIATION TRAINED
Nathan Bishop, Lee Grant, Phil Jones, Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

    B LIST
Ethan Laird, Max Taylor, Brandon Williams, Di'Shon Bernard, Teden Mengi, Angel Gomes, James Garner, Arnau Puigmal, Largie Ramazani, Dylan Levitt, Mason Greenwood, Tahith Chong, D'Mani Mellor.

Strike-through players left us. Other red font players are injured.

Mini-injury crisis in defence. Could see a few U-23s played there.

PS: "Timothy Fosu-Mensah is a notable omission from the squad, according to UEFA's website, but he qualifies as a B-List player so could still feature in the knockout stages."

TFM qualifies for the B-List because although 22, he's officially still an U-21 player according to the rules as he was born : 2-Jan-1998. he was only 20 on 1-Jan-2019. At the start of the year when the season began he was under 21 - which is the qualifying rule for U-21s.
For some reason you missed Ethan Galbraith, who came off the bench in Kazakhstan.

Wasn’t that long a holiday for the first XI.
I thought OGS would have allowed them to stay away for LASK.

I would love to see him. More than any of our other kids.
He’s a decent talent but I doubt he’ll make it here. Hoping to see more of the likes of Laird, Mengi, Garner and maybe Levitt.

I doubt he'll make it either, but I watch a lot of our youth games and, right now, he's my favourite to watch from the lot and has been for some time. Though Mejbri is running him close now. I prefer him to Garner and Levitt, personally.

Why is Luke Shaw on the Club Trained list? Have I misunderstood what that means? All the others listed are first-year academy graduates.

Made a switch based on McTominay not being in training. Give Timmy Fosu Mensah a game at CDM, many think his natural position, can't hurt to try him out here. Give Garner some license to get forward and maybe nick a goal, he has been good in that role for the reserves this year.

Fred needs to be a consistent fixture in the line up, he will get better as he gets more starts, think he finds being in and out of the side difficult.
