So they can sign players like Willian and Coutinho, paying huge wages but can't keep their staff on?

As a fan/supporter, I’m embarrassed a club with the finances such as Arsenal are doing this.

I’d be even more embarrassed if I was one or two of the playing staff and pulling down the equivalent of that in just over a couple of months.

As beautiful a game that football is, the business and financial side of it is ugly as sin.

Exactly. For big clubs such as Arsenal, the priority should be to retain all staff and then go and spend. They’re in no danger of being relegated. Retain the staff, help the economy, keep the community strong. Pathetic from them.

Disgraceful club. They done this while paying that rat Kia millions of pounds in agent fee for bringing his washed out pals like Luiz and Willian. And why the feck they wanted to associate themselves with scum like him anyway ? Its so weird. Arsenal is the dumping ground for unwanted Kia clients.

I’m not detracting from what they did, but I really can’t imagine a pre Kroenke era Arsenal doing this.

He stole the soul of the club!

Is Arsenal's commercial department completely non-existent or Kroenke skimming everything off the top? Surely, a popular EPL team like Arsenal with a huge worldwide following should not be in this much trouble financially to be unable to support 55 extra staff?

People on Twitter are blaming Ozil and his wages
They should be looking at the fecker who signs his cheque’s!

Ozil should be embarrassed for himself though. If he took a pay break for 3 months he’d cover all those wages.

But not his fault he’s getting it though.

What if he can't afford to?

It's Arsenal who got themselves in to the situation, not fair to blame the players.

These steps have all reduced the impact of the pandemic on the club and have helped us continue to maintain investment in the team. This will continue to be a key priority.
Absolute shitc**ts.

disgraceful stuff. How can you even try to convince anybody that 55 redundancies are absolutely necessary when you are owned by a billionaire and throw big contracts towards ageing players? Not saying dealing with that Covid stuff is always easy, but that's sad. Yet another club that has handled this very poorly.

Can’t wait until they back track on this, after massive public backlash.

Ozil? Your owner is worth $10 billion dollars.
The owner is 99.9% to blame but i can understand people moaning at Ozil. Everybody agreed to the pay cut while working their ass off to get something out of this disaster of a season. He kept it all to himself while sitting on his thumb in Turkey. Kroenke took on hundreds of millions of debt on a new loan, what's 3M more when we're being linked to Partey's release clause at 45M, Willian getting a 3 year deal at 32 and the list goes on...

I'd gladly not sign Willian and stick with youth if it meant those people kept their jobs.

Most clubs going to start making redundancies over the next year. Posted in other thread the full extent of the economic damage to football won't be visible till end of 2021. Sponsorship and broadcast income going to reduce (along with the obvious we've seen already), though by exactly how much and how fast remains to be seen.

These are businesses, if we don't like it, need to change how the economy works entirely.

That’s why I said they should be looking at the fecker who signs his cheque’s.

Kroenke is the reason this is happening, but Arsenal FC shoulders the shame/blame because he’s not a owner who’s got anything but profit and loss on his agenda.

An act like this is ruthless and callous, even more so during the week of having won the FA cup.

Would like to see the type of staff. On the face of it, it looks like a shitty decision but they might be working for departments that are basically redundant for the foreseeable.

Didn't he refuse cos they didn't say where it's going? Basically his point was why take a pay cut if the owners/shareholders are just going to keep it? Seems fair enough to ask really.

Yeah, I think this is the problem with knee jerk reactions (I've been guilty of it myself to be honest.) Like all businesses football clubs have been hit massively with COVID and they have to make sacrifices, I bet over 90% of this forum the company they work for have implemented some cost cutting exercise whether its redundancies, pay cuts, closures of offices etc. My work have done it and it's a shame but it is life, they realised there was basically departments over staffed and Person A could do Person B's job (sometimes better) so economically they get rid of Person B, I'm sure it's the same at football clubs.

They could of worded it a lot better I agree and shouldn't really talk about the signing of new players in the same article that is very David Brent getting a promotion and trying to celebrate whilst shutting down an office at the same time but stuff like this was going to happen eventually. I never quite get the argument of current players being criticised. I wouldn't criticise someone in my work keeping their job in a different department and me losing mine.

This is what bothers me the most about modern football. We make bizarre signings like Cedric and no doubt pay agents millions of pounds but we have to make 55 people redundant to save £2.7m? Especially in this climate? How easy will it be for those let go to find new work. It fecking stinks

It's gross for a huge PL team to do it but to do it after winning a cup that got them £3.6 million and during a time where they're gonna give their star striker £300,000 a week is taking the piss.

Really really poor from Arsenal that. You would really hope we will never stoop that low, but just you know someone like Rashford would step up and pay the salaries out of his own pocket if we did.

You’d hope that some of the players will volunteer a pay cut.

The timing is just shambolic. Win the cup and get a chance to play in europe and then taking such decision.

That's very poor, how can they justify by firing 55 people or 55 positions to save 2.8 million when they will be signing some chumps for big money?
If we don't sign some chumps for big money there'll be more layoffs. Arsenal are in a poor situation with bloated wages and no cl. But the way out is not to stop recruitment and sink further down. The 3m saved can be the difference between Partey and no Partey.

3 million is nothing for club like Arsenal.

Logged in to say that this is disgraceful. Kroenke is sitting on billions, hasn’t invested a penny in the club, and yet we’re seeing 55 hardworking staff members sacked. Billionaires are evil.

This is the worst take I’ve read all day. If as a club we can’t take care of our own staff members during a global crisis, who the feck wants to support this management anymore? I don’t care about Partey or no Partey, sacking people is wrong, especially when they have money to line up Joorabchian‘s pockets or when the owner hasn’t invested a penny in the club. We should all be ashamed of the club.

It is how the rich stay rich unfortunately.

What a shambles, as a big club to operate in this manner is slightly worrying.
