Becoming a bit of a "poisoned chalice" isn't it?

Surely the next time we assign it, we have to get it correct. Putting it on established stars hasn't worked.

I'd love to see us give it to Mason Greenwood personally. Youth product too. Beckham and Ronaldo got it when still wet behind the ears, and it worked okay.

Jadon Sancho. It has to be.

It would be a crime against marketing if he didn't get it.

Sancho or Greenwood. It needs to be somebody with something to prove.

We should only give it to a highly talented British player, French or Portuguese one.

We should stop giving it so much importance. The more we want our #7 to be successful and a rightful heir, the more they end up sucking. In contrast, the #7 for Chelsea and Liverpool are Kante and Milner.

However, Sancho to be our #7, Mason #11. Nice combination of 7-9-10 or 11-9-10.

The decisions behind signing the players given it/giving the number to players who didn't need or want it (Valencia) have been consistently awful.

Owen was a cheap (read: free) trick to try to gloss over not replacing Ronaldo. Valencia should never have been given it obviously. Di Maria was a badly thought out Woodward galactico signing, as was Sanchez.

As long as it isn't Peresic, Willian, Ozil or any other entering the end of his career I'll be happy. Sancho is most likely.

Random aside... Why do people care so much about who has what shirt number? It's literally just a number.

Yeah, I think I grew out of caring about shirt numbers when I was about 15. Weird to think of grown men who actually care about shirt numbers and new kits but to each their own.

The 7 shirt has commercial benefits so needs to be a good looking flair player. Sancho or Greenwood would suit it well

One of those myths that needs to die.

Michael Owen, Angel Di Maria, Memphis Depay, Alexis Sanchez...

If we get Sancho over the line, we should give him something else.

Give it the winner of the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award every season. So currently, Luke Shaw would be wearing it. De Gea would also have been wearing it for quite a few seasons as well. It’s a bad idea. But It’s an idea.

This shirt number means so much for the club and the fans. The next player to wear it has to deserve/earn it on the pitch before wear it and stop just give it to random players we bought, please (Memphis, Alexis, Sancho(?), Valencia, Di Maria etc).
The negative thing is that puts a lot of pressure on them when they aren't ready to wear it imo.

It's not really a poisoned chalice. A good player with a good attitude will do it justice. Give it to Sancho and wel see.

If he fails you may have a point!

Honestly I would prefer Greenwood over Sancho. It’s the ultimate “we believe in you, we trust you,” symbol. I remember Becks speaking about the motivation it gave him when he was handed it.

Tony V wore it for a season too.

Since when? I don't recall it even being a thing until about fifteen years ago.
Robson, Cantona, Ronaldo. That's it. Best mostly wore 11. It's bollocks.
Yes but still. It's like the 10 for France (Zidane, Platini). A lot of players had the bad idea to wear it...unnecessary pressure on them while they aren't ready so it's a easy way to fail.
You've forgot Beckham too.

Sign Messi next season on a free and give this number to him. That should piss off Ronaldo.

Couldn’t disagree more with people saying the number isn’t important, it’s a key part of our history and deserves a worthy heir. I think Sancho will be the one to break the curse if he signs. If not I’d give it greenwood.

Kanchelskis as well (though he wasnt synonymous with it of course). And there was the whole market around it Best being 7 especially since he wore during our european cup win. Thats what hes become known for.

The number 7 is only a poisoned chalice if you sign shit players and give it to them. We could say the same thing about any shirt number that's consistently had shit players wear it over the last 10 years

Well seeing as Robson, Cantona and Beckham (who you missed) were more than 15 years ago I think you might be wrong there. Best wore it when he played on the right wing and 11 when on the left. He wore 7 when we won the European cup.

So pretty much from the 80s until 2009 the shirt has gone to our best/most talismanic player. However I’d say you’re slightly right in it not being much of a thing until recently, but recently begins in 93/94 when the premier league brought in squad numbers and Cantona was officially the number 7. Rather than Robson who chose that shirt pretty much every game and Best who donned a different shirt depending on his position.
