I dont really understand the argument "tranfer ban yes BUT you lot got the whole loan army so don't complain".
People mocked us for years because of this.
It was the club decision to put this system in place and because of that Chelsea benefited this season. Yes it was kinda forced upon but it ultimately helped.

Now for Frank itself, he like not every manager would really believe in this squad to get to top4. He gave the "boys" enough confidents unlike Conte or Jose they would have sulked complaint etc. as seen from previous seasons.
For him it was a chance to manage Chelsea and he took it as well as he could.

This seems like strange logic to me. It's effectively like saying the season would have been classed as a greater success had the results occurred in a different order.
Leicester were very unlucky with injuries.

But in general recent results should always take precedence because they reflect progression.

Take United as an example. A managers job is to make the team better. United are a far better team than they were in August. Because they've improved due to the work put in all season by the manager, coaches and players. This improvement is reflected in the results over time. Good management leads to better results.

Not trying to be smart here but this seems like a simple concept that certain members of the cafe don't seem to get.

Yeah, but in Ole's case it wasn't good management. He just lucked out on Bruno (who isn't all that anyway, there are signs indicating that he's actually a bit of a fraud - he wasn't sensationally brilliant in a couple of matches towards the end of the campaign).

We can't forget the first part of the season. The only reason 3rd looks like a reasonable achievement is how shite we appeared back in November. Besides, we shouldn't even mention "3rd", because it's an utter embarrassment for Manchester United, regardless of - you know - circumstances (there are no "circumstances", only excuses).

Improving - over the course of a season - isn't a thing. It's just another excuse. "Elite" managers don't improve - they're pure gold all the time, no exceptions. Anything else is the mark of a fraud (of course, there are valid exceptions here, but they only pertain to a limited number of individual managers, who were terribly let down by their players - but the Manchester United manager is never let down by his players, that simply doesn't happen).

Both Ole and Lampard have done a very good job but one gets massive credit and the other gets very little credit for his work.

Also as a general point the teams with the highest wage bills tend to finish in the top 4 positions much much more often than not. Leicester’s wage bill is like a 100 million less than the rest. It would have been an extraordinary achievement to finish in the top 4. I think they possibly could have pulled it off if they had all their key players fit but then that’s the nature of the beast. They didn’t have the squad to be able to cope.

Bruno wasn’t the sole reason for United’s improvement. Rashford would have missed most the 2nd half of the season so if anything they are one of the main beneficiaries of the break in the season. whether that is luck or not, who cares?

But I thought this was about Lampard anyway?
Overall I’ll give Lampard a 7.5/10. He has made mistakes but that’s expected of a new manager. So far his biggest contributions have been made off the pitch, uniting the entire club in one direction. It can’t be understated just how important that is.

I think most Manutd fans will agree with you on this. The shambles under Jose, this is why I cannot understand the criticism Ole gets because reuniting a squad is not as easy as some think.

 a feckin joke really the media ass-kissing of Lampard. Its really weird people just mention Chelsea had a transfer ban (just one window at that) and forget to mention they brought in Pulisic to replace Hazard and probably has been their best creator, had tons of experienced loanees on hand and also the fact that they had a squad which finished 3rd even with the amount of turbulence under Sarri.

With four nominees, who should have got fourth place ahead of him?

We’d all like Ole but Chelsea finished ahead of us - and made a cup final, beating us en route - despite the transfer ban (which is an obvious reason to give extra weight to the influence of the manager) Who else stood out as a manager? I can’t think of anyone.

I think Fwank’s a bang average manager who will be found out in the near future but don’t think this nomination is any kind of outrage.

You're right though. Lampard getting a nom for this is nothing really. He's a mile behind Klopp or Wilder in terms of winning this.
Exactly. I guess Pep could feel hard done by. He’s clearly either the second best or best manager in the league. But dropped a good bit below his own high standards this season.

None of this matters anyway. Klopp is a shoe-in. Deservedly so.

Ole beat Frank 3 times this year, once in the league cup and both times in the league.

Who gives a feck who the other 3 are, only one is winning it, Klopp. As if the media are going to choose anyone else.

I reckon he will win it by an absolute landslide

That is some delusion. Other than top 2, all teams have been in free fall. With 66 points, United and chelsea just got lucky. Don't paint Lampard as a messiah against your own Premier league champion managers. Winning a Premier league is a whole different thing than getting 66 points.

You sacked your manager as you finished third, won europa league last season. Don't understand lampard as some one who lifted your whole club which was in disarray.

You have good recruitment system, army of loanees, good tactical system developed by Sarri as a passing team etc which lampard benefitted from. Selling hazard and buying 2 players for 80+m despite transfer ban, still Chelsea fans are trying to portray Lampard being the saviour.

He's quite clearly comparing to how they would have managed this current situation not there legacy. Lampard has done better with our circumstances of this season than Jose and especially Conte would have done, that i am certain.

Na mate, it was mutual. The board would have kept him but Sarri wasn't too happy either.

Conte won the league as he changed the system to 3 at the back while you had no chance of winning the league. Those managers are in a whole different level. Claiming they would have done badly is pure assumption of my new toy is best. Just my opinion though.

You really think Conte, in light of his behaviour in his second season at Chelsea and especially now at Inter would have knuckled down and got his job in the circumstances we faced this season? I truly dread to think how bad his behaviour would have been and the toxic atmosphere that would have spread around the club.

Jose, may have at a push got us 4th but would have done it playing no youth (with the possible exception of Mount due to his work rate) and absolutely eye bleeding football even by his standards (and he'd have used the transfer ban to justify it) which would have been a major step back in the ultimate goal of challenging Liverpool and City.

Last summer the target was to build a progressive style of play while integrating youth players, it should be pretty self explanatory to point out that's as far removed from their MO's as it's possible to get.

The media are so desperate for Lampard and Gerrard to be a success. It’s so forced.

What’s with the revisionist history over Chelsea? Looking on Reddit, all I see is “he deserves it, everyone thought Chelsea would finish mid-table at the start of the season” comments. It’s total nonsense. He had the third best squad in the league. He’s done a decent job for sure, he deserves credit for that but. Obviously I have a Man Utd bias but I really think Ole has done a better job this season, he’s improved every player.

Never claimed they would have done badly but probably.
My point was that the overall mood through out the season would have been unbearable because as you said those are managers who demand a certain level of service from the club in say players qualities and so on. They would shield themself with the transfer ban and excuse everything.
I just think Lampard approached the season not with the mindset "its a throw away season and the youth players will be gone anyway in the next window".
From my point of view he really believed in the qualities of the available players and just got on with it.

No it's not, just looking on the Chelsea thread through only two pages after the Leicester game I found these.

They’re in for a long season.
So it looks like it's just us and Arsenal fighting for fourth.
Dear lord they're in trouble.
At least they have Abraham. He’s every opposition defenders dream opponent.
Transfer ban has killed them. Their attack is relying on a rookie and Pulisic. I'll be gobsmacked if they score more than 60 league goals this season.
I like this Chelsea!
I tried to tell you guys in the matchday thread when they faced us that chelsea wont finish top 8. They don't have a great squad after losing their best play who was responsible for 70% of their creativity. Its like us if we lost Pogba and couldn't effectively replace him.
That squad is the 6th best in the league. At best.

Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic. I like Lampard as a manger. Christian Pulisic will become world class. He's building a seriously strong team.

He's building a team to fit the 4:3:3 system.

Timo Werner

Matches 34 goals 28

Some managers get slaughtered for their teams conceding half as much as Lampard has this season. For some reasons Lampard's poor defensive organization of his team doesn't get the harsh criticism and scrutiny it deserves. Everyone in the media is just content on blaming poor defenders and goalkeepers yet forget that somehow Sarri managed to get these same players defensively set up 10 times better than Lampard has them this season.

It's good to be a young British manager, instantly a media darling and free passes.

Can't wait for next season to get going so the media finally won't have that transfer ban excuse to forgive and turn a blind eye to all Lampard's shortcomings.
