55 redundancies.
How else are they going to finance Aubameyang's new deal? £3m is back of the sofa change to a club like Arsenal is it not? 6th richest club in world football?

This is the worst take I’ve read all day. If as a club we can’t take care of our own staff members during a global crisis, who the feck wants to support this management anymore? I don’t care about Partey or no Partey, sacking people is wrong, especially when they have money to line up Joorabchian‘s pockets or when the owner hasn’t invested a penny in the club. We should all be ashamed of the club.
If the club decides that this is what is needed to move forward then you have to support to club. 55 employees sacked will be nothing compared to the trouble the rest of the employees will be if Arsenal keep sinking. Ideally I'd want Ozil to leave, or Auba to accept a lesser contract but that isn't going to happen.
3 million is nothing for club like Arsenal.
Evidently not.

Ozil? Your owner is worth $10 billion dollars.
The owner is more like a shareholder, he doesn't invest and he doesn't take money out. And from what I've heard he has already contributed by restructuring the long term debt the club owes.

Yet he can't contribute 0.03% of his net worth to prevent these sackings? Why even bother to be involved in the club?

Pretty scummy that they said 'your club'. We're all in this together - except the people we let go for Willian and Auba, who'll both be playing the Ozil role in the reserves on monster wages in a few years anyway

Really really poor from Arsenal that. You would really hope we will never stoop that low, but just you know someone like Rashford would step up and pay the salaries out of his own pocket if we did.

You’d hope that some of the players will volunteer a pay cut.
Doubt it - how bad would it look for the club if we let a load of staff go and one of our own players paid their wages instead?

To be fair to us we've been fantastic during the COVID-19 lockdown madness, no forloughing and great community work done (obvious highlight being Rashford)

You can bet that kid would offer to.
Really can’t see it coming to that with us though, like you say we’ve handled this whole thing very well so far.

Sky reporting Arsenal looking at 55 redundancies! FFS!

They’re looking at giving Aubameyang a new contract that’s surely going to b over £200’ a week but they can’t afford to keep Gill the tea lady who’s on NLW. fecking disgrace!

They should have a ban from all transfer activity and financial renewals (contracts etc) if they’re saying how they simply cannot afford to keep these staff on!

His involvement in the club is minimal. If the club were owned by shareholders would you expect them to forego dividend payouts so that the money could go to employees. It's the middle of a recession caused by a pandemic, the club has to do what it needs to survive. And that doesn't mean spending less on recruitment, that'll just make things worse.

Crying about FFP and then firing stuff so Edu can send few millions to his friend Kia. Lovely club.

He's the sole shareholder and it's not like shares are publicly traded anyhow; you're comparing it to a completely different ownership model.

What a scummy club, I imagine the 55 people they let go won't cover 3 months of Willians wages...

Might be wrong but to me it looks like they are getting rid of their scouts as they are no longer needed under their new transfer committee and possibly a few people from their sales team as there’s little they can sell in terms of corporate because of covid. Very much doubt the tea lady or people earning between 25-40k going to be too affected

Can’t wait until they back track on this, after massive public backlash.
I don't think they will. The owners have consistently shown that they are greedy ***** that don't care about the fans, the community or anybody else really.

The fans will continue to buy season tickets, the new kit, hats, scarves, gloves etc and the money will keep rolling in.

This may help them invest in the team in the short-term, but gutting the scouting network could have long-term negative impacts. Not a good sign for a club that just saw it's lowest placed league finish in decades. Could genuinely see mid-table becoming the new norm for them.

So what did they do with the money?
I think the Covid situation is being used as a smokescreen to justify these redundancies when in actual fact it's a method to further tighten control over transfers in the agent-led method the club is adopting. I don't think the £2m or £3m the club is saving annually is really conducive to financial security, especially when we're prepared to go out and sign Willian with a reported £10m signing on fee.

I think what's worse is that Mikel Arteta is in the same boat as the players, he was also assured that pay cuts would stop others from losing their job and is now complicit in convincing the players to take them in the first place. If nothing else it really erodes trust amongst everyone at the club. The cynical side of me believes that the players will gloss over this fairly quickly considering how no player every criticises Chelsea or Man City's owners' human right's violations; compared to that this is a small fry level of immorality. However some players, Hector Bellerin in particular, might take a much more grim view of the situation as he was one of the players to help convince the rest of the team this was best for the club.

Good post and this makes sense. It's hard to say how this will work out in the long term - personally I'd be a bit leery of over-relying on agents as they will always but their agenda and interests first, but perhaps given the close relationship Sanllehi and Edu can build both parties can benefit. I suppose this has certainly worked well for Wolves; time will tell how things go for Arsenal.

Bit sad though given how well Arsenal have been able to unearth gems in the past.

During the barren years, at the end of an AGM the late Peter Hill-Wood (chairman at the time) said to the fans "Thank you for your interest in our affairs", which as you can imagine didn't go down well at all.

Kroenke came in and stopped the AGM from happening altogether which also didn't go down well.

The language used here is clearly a pathetic attempt to compensate for the growing disconnect between board and fans.

That's terrible if the players agreed to a wage cut if the promise was to not let staff go. There will be some players within that squad that generally care about the staff behind the scenes and worry for them. We say there is no loyalty in football but it's a two way street.

I wouldn't just call out Arsenal here - all big businesses are run by scumbags

I can see Mourinho heading to the Emirates next - how old will their attack be with Willian, Mkhitaryan, Ozil and Auba in a few years?! Crazy that they're so skint but spent mega money on veteran wages

He'll be 33 during the last year of that contract, not now.

You think United and other club have 0 reduncies every year?
Arsenal is just the only club who made it transparent this summer due to Corona.

And it doesn't look like it's a money reason. Of course the club had the money to pay them.

No we haven’t had any redundancies based on financial loss due to covid. That’s already been well documented. Stop making shite up.

The gooners are NOT the only club who has made it transparent. spurs and the dippers announced furlough and redundancies but backtracked due to immense bad publicity and backlash.

You’re the only vile cnut of a club that would lay off 55 loyal staff so that you can pay your star striker and possibly fund a loan deal or two. Disgusting. A blight on football.

And yes It IS a money thing considering your played took pay cuts to avoid precisely this situation. Yet promises to them have been broken. Well except obamayang. He got the pay day he was looking for after holding the club hostage for the last year

It's a risky strat to be giving so many older players with no resale value big money contracts. They're basically relying on them to get top 4/CL through the EL in these next couple of years otherwise it will be a gamble that hasn't worked.

I would take Luiz over Varane. At least he know how to beat City after gifting them the win.
Real Madrid won La Liga because of their defense. Arsenal finished 8th with Luiz as their centre back. One game doesn't reflect the overall performance in a season.

Luiz would dominate La liga too just like he did in France. I have no idea what Varane was doing yesterday. Gifted the win to City on his own.
