I don't like Pogba that deep. His game relies mostly on out-strengthening the oponnent to make some space for a pass. He has little impact on the game, yet can produce a couple of great passes when given time on the ball.

I'd give Fred some games I his position as he impressed me today.

Also, Matic is twice the player Carrick has ever been.
I agree about not liking to have Pogba so deep. We should have our best passer and creative force way up the field. The problem is who will supply the passes from deep? With Fred and Mctominay you’ll have sideway passes all game.
It works in the big games , but against lesser teams you’ll not score any goals.

The sort of game people get all excited about if the ball hits the net (as it should have done about five times).

Cue whinging, of course. I only watched from the second half onwards but there was plenty of positive, attacking football on display. Just a shame we were hilariously wasteful and came up against a motivated keeper.
Most of the moaning is probably due to the very poor first half display

That performance by Johnsson is one of the best I've seen from a goalie in a long, long time. The guy was brilliant in everything, not just in pulling off world class saves, but everything.

It was a thoroughly unenjoyable game.

Their keeper played very well but a lot of those saves wouldn't have been savable if the shots had been placed better.

So Seville/Wolves next and then the winner of that game plays Manchester United B in the final?

Horrendous finishing today but performance was fine. First half was a bit shit but past that could've been like 5-0. Martial was unreal but kept taking too many touches instead of shooting. Rashford meh. Don't like him much in the creative role, he's much better at being the inside forward out there and being direct rather than holding a deeper position. Probably a factor is Greenwood being there on the right as more of a scorer, so Ole tells rashford to be more a creative role. Doesn't really work so far.

Bruno had good and bad moments, unnecessarily sloppy on occasions which he'll need to cut out as its becoming far too repetitive (thats purely focus imo). Pogba was very good throughout. Our on the ball ability from our fullbacks i feel like will forever hold us back, but thats nothing new.

Any Spanish football experts here who can tell us what are our chances against Sevilla if they get through tomorrow?
We’ll be favourites against anyone we play no matter what happens between now and the time we go out. Sevilla are decent and have great history in this competition, but United win more often than not.

Surreal game. We didn't play well but should have scored at least five...

Still, there's definitely a lot of work to be done with this team. It's also slightly concerning how often we need a penalty to open the scoring.

I’ve seen a lot of bad takes on this forum, but claiming Matic is better than Carrick is right up there. Matic looked poor tonight and gave the ball away multiple times, against a really tired Danish team.

I enjoyed it. Could have finished 8-2 and some nice spells of play from us at times.

We obviously need to be more clinical and tighten up a bit if we are going to win this.

He had much better players around him though.

Carrick was very consistent, I can agree on that. But currently Matic is much better player for us than prime Carrick has been.
Couldn't be more wrong. A prime Carrick is exactly what this midfield is crying out for.

Not a chance mate. You’re entitled to your opinion but I doubt any Utd supporter on this forum, or anywhere in the world would agree with your statement. Because it’s nonsense.

Some of you really are weird. You love to wallow in negativity. The match day thread is pretty much unbearable these days as it's full of cnuts.

Everyone knows the team is knackered. Everyone knows the COVID schedule has done us over. Everyone knows this knock out competition is just about winning. It doesn't really matter how.

Anyway the clubs in another semi final. Let's hope we can go all the way. Well done lads.

Honestly, I thought we played well. Created chances. Copenhagen played blinding defense and their goalkeeper exhibited god-like skills today. They have speed. Other than that, there were generally ineffective and our defense held. Say what you want about individual moments, our defensive line did its job. I'm not going to slate anyone today. Everyone did multiple good things today, even if they did multiple not-great things.

Now honestly, how many of you were holding your breath when Lingard made that run?

I agree with this, a prime Carrick sat in front of this defence would be an upgrade on Matic, I say that as a big fan of Matic.

Also don’t forget some of the dross carrick has next to him outside of Scholes and pre illness Fletcher? Cleverley, Jones, Anderson, Gibson, and more I’m sure I’m forgetting.

Have to tip your hat. They defended hard and keeper was a wall.

Fred was poor again though, really starting to get concerned that seems so dependent on a run of games. Bruno had moment of quality and moment of pure trash. Rashfod had moments but lacking cutting edge.
Maguire and Bailey were immense in the first half, Martial and Mata tidy in the second

Another day that would be a 2-0,3-0 win. Sometimes you have to give props to the opposition

Matić used to be half the player Carrick was. Earlier this season he was less than a quarter. Overall, 1 Carrick = approx 2.2 Matic.

I thought the overall performance was fine, lots of chances created. Martial looked like he just wanted to walk it in.
Some good individual performances, Williams and Pogba, although he's playing too deep, stood out for me.

We do seem to make hard work of it constantly but yeah, we were good from the second half onwards tonight and just couldn’t get the breakthrough.

Their keeper was insanely good and Mata and Martial were both very impressive in ET.

Doubt we will beat Inter if we meet them. They are better at what they do than we are what we do. Go a goal down to them and we are fecked.

Rashfords form is a bit worrying. He is being very reactive and not proactive on the pitch. He just seems to be waiting for a counter attack all the time.

Conte will be creaming himself watching this game, especially the first half. Its a blue print on how to stop us. That is if we beat Wolves or whoever in the semi.
Yes, agree with most of this. Rashford is out of time for his flick-a-switch arrival to ... composure/maturity/Top end decision making. Bring potentially great only cuts it for so long. He needs to kick on. To become a warrior, the finished article.

I genuinely can’t believe this thread. What a bunch of spoilt brats. We’ve made it to the next round that’s all that matters.

Not sure why people are moaning about the performance. We battered them. Just had one those nights where nothing would go in bar a pen.

It's all about motivation in these kind of games.

Props to them (and especially their keeper) for making it difficult, but in the end they were outclassed.

So can we all give Ole credit for making that inspired Mata for Greenwood sub? I think most on here wouldn't have agreed with it at the time
I'm quite happy to. Greenwood wasn't finding his shot tonight. I know some people will say Rashford should have come off, but if it went to penalties, you would want him to be one of the penalty takers.
I know it's a cliché, but Mata on a good day will find the spaces against sides that are difficult to break down and was probably our best chance of changing the game from the bench tonight. The other option would have been Ighalo, but don't think he was the right solution for tonight's opponent.

Mata has his uses. Today's game is a clear example.

We didn't create too much from open play yet again and all our chances were individual work like Martial's solo runs, Bruno's/Greenwood's shots etc. It's really sad we still can't create chances with patterns of play and have to rely on individuals/penalties to bail us out.

If we ever reach the final, we'll probably get humiliated against Conte's counter attacking football as we're clueless against deep defending teams.

Indeed TR, indeed. It's not even like we played badly and got lucky. Just one of those weird, freak results.

Either way, onward and upwards. We prefer Sevilla or Wolves? I'm thinking Sevilla as it will give us extra incentive to raise our game.

The big negative is we couldn't avoid extra time. That said we got better as the game went on so hopefully that bit of sharpness we can carry through and not so much the heavy legs.

Yeah I'm hoping we avoid Wolves. Not as I feel they would beat us but because they would make the game a slog and would be nice to have a different non PL opponent. Plus we owe Sevilla one!

I'm surprised how little some people are willing to take account of the strange circumstances these games are being played in since the restart, still playing in August in the heat, as though it was business as usual. Watch the Champions League matches and you can see the same thing happening.

If we can grind out results for two more games and go home with a trophy, I'll be happy, as I've always been concerned about us being knackered before the new season's even started with these EL games. And, yes, well done lads, just step up a gear for the next game.

First half we were poor but the 2nd half into the 1st half of Extra time we genuinely could have scored 5 or 6 goals.

Just a freakish night where almost nothing went our way, so to go through all that and still win is a good sign I think.

First half bad, second was good. Sound have won easily. Making it hard for ourselves like usual. We will need to step it up for our next game..
