If I was the manager I would have told them to do different things tonight than what transpired, so they would have responded to do exactly that.

All from your comfy armchair with zero coaching experience? Ole, Phelan, Carrick, Kieran, you know better than them all - well done.
The truth is from your home watching match day games on TV, you can't really make such assertions.

Ole didn't ask Rashford not to make any runs, neither did he have a choice with Luke Shaw injured, with the right footed Williams rarely backing himself to even venture forward, if you get that much immobility from one side, you're not going to create many patterns on the pitch. We all know that AWB brings a lot more in defence than attack, but with no attacking balance on the left, we're forced to rely too heavily on the poorest part of his game.

Edit:
This is the same side that was scoring 3s and 5s per game not too long ago, and the same team that had 14 shots on target.
Where exactly are you expecting me to type my opinion from? Why are you jealous of my comfortable home?

Are you going to take my opinion more seriously if I was in any discomfort?

I agree with your analysis of the game, but isn't some of your submissions prooving my point?
Why should we sign someone who is not comfortable on the ball? I had rather sign someone who is excellent on the ball with 50% of AWB defensive ability.
The coaches are paid to organise the team and make it more modern.

Everybody can see how pogba is isolated in midfield since lock down except the coaches who apparently know more than the rest of us.

The confidence he's given to our strikers should be praised and rightly so.

I just really hope we abandon this build-up structure.

Matic slots into a back 3. Pogba becomes isolated. Bruno ventures up top with Martial. The distance between the 3 midfield players is absurd. We're basically playing a 1 man midfield. The full-backs push up as well. Shaw sometimes was drifting in to supplement the midfield, but I don't think it's enough. We seem to almost bypass the midfield at times. I just don't think it'll work out vs better teams.
I'm Ole in and think Ole has overperformed this season but I agree with this. It must be deliberate as Fred did it in the first half as well but I'm struggling to see the benefit of it, other than when we do lose the ball we have 3 players back. Bruno did seem to play deeper in the second half which is promising - we need a triangle in the middle of the pitch rather than a straight line from defense to attack.

I would like one of the pathetic whingers to explain what their issue is with this and what more they expect, bearing in mind that practically every other top 8 manager (barring Rogers) has seemingly done a decent job for their respective clubs. Let's not forget that Lampard was nominated for Best Manager too.

We didn't win the league!

And first half of the season pattern as well as last half season before tells us that we will be rubbish at least one half next season! And it's all down to Ole not playing the youth!

We set up attacks haphazardly but I can forgive that as we’re handicapped by AWB and Williams who aren’t good enough in attack. Especially AWB. Having two fantastic attacking fullback would give us a such a different look. We could actually stretch teams and play with space. Now we’re just playing through the middle most of the time and 90% of the time our full backs do receive the ball, they recycle possession backwards or into the middle. I’m convinced we will look significantly better if and when we upgrade.
This

The fullbacks are a hinderance and not of the requisite standard if we're to challenge the top teams.

Having watched and supported Utd for over 30 years, I'm shocked at how lazy and band wagon jumping the thoughts of some of our fans can be with regards to Ole. I'm shocked there is still an "Ole Out" agenda against him with some of our fans.

Since Fergie retired, we have witnessed some of the most atrocious football Utd has performed in over 30 years. Moyes, LVG and Jose took us to the depths of despair. For the first time in my life, I was actually giving it a miss to watch some of our games live under those managers. It was tumescent, depressing and seriously underwhelming.

When Ole came into the job, I was absolutely frustrated. I was crying out for Poch to come and be the man to take us forward. But I accepted the part time role that Ole was going to perform and accepted a new approach thinking "It's only till the end of the season." The season was already a write off when Jose got sacked. Ole coming in was hopefully a way of raising morale and bringing some happiness back into the squad at least.

When Ole got given the job full time before the season was up, I was frustrated and anxious about it. I felt it was bad timing and rushed.

But reflecting on where we are now, I simply can not fathom how there can be any justification in sacking him at the state we have been brought to now. We are now playing the best football we have played since Fergie left. Some of the football we play is arguably better than the football we saw under fergie in the latter years after Ronaldo left.

Ole has got us playing in a way we enjoy watching. Its exciting and we look forward to games with anticipation again. He's brought in players who bring energy and enthusiasm which has been lacking massively in previous signings. Virtually all his signings have been a success compared to the catastrophic signings which came before him. He has slowly got rid of the absolute dross in our squad and the parasites that needed moving on. He has got us into 3 semi-finals in all cup competitions we have been in this year. He has achieved the highest possible league position which was realistically attainable based on current teams in the league. What more does the guy need to do to give him a break?

Gheez, have people forgotten the absolute shite we've endured over the last 6 years or so. Be grateful for better times and be hopeful for even greater times ahead. Regardless of his CV or what you think of him. He's earnt the right for more time. If the car his heading towards the correct destination, then why get out of the car now?

Ole's biggest achievement has been continued "progression". We have not regressed and gone backwards under him. The fact we have constantly been moving forward under him just goes to show how far backwards we had gone. Give the guy a break. He is taking us in the right direction.

Sad folk posting in here while the game was going on, one in which we haven’t even lost.
You know that they wanted us to lose, and get knocked out of a cup, just so they could 'be right', even though getting knocked out of the cup wont change anything.
Ole is here for the foreseeable future. I really think mods should close this thread as it serves no purpose. @Sultan

This thread once again has some very astute observations which are countered by pure whataboutism and top red nonsense. This doesn't lead to a good discussion but just pointless name-calling.

It's all well and good saying you believe in Ole and using stats that help your case but there are just as many, if not more, which show the opposite.

If you watch us, we don't look any more coherent as a team than when Mourinho was in charge and we know what happened after we finished second, so it's obvious the here-and-now style of play has implications for the future.

People might argue these are one-off games and it's now tournament football, so we should be more cautious but the pattern is there. The CDM dropping between the CBs, stupid passing from the back when our players clearly are not coached to do it which leads to mistakes and why the press is so effective against us.

I don't personally believe OGS has the capabilities to get us a title in terms of coaching ability but I think we can do it with him if help is brought in. He's excellent at the man-management side of things, much like SAF, and knows how things should be done at this club.

So I'll continue to hope (but not expect) to see us play a certain way for more than 10 minutes at a time. We also don't have preseason this year to work on things, which makes it even harder.

I just hope we get Sancho at least, so whoever is the manager in 2-3 years has a great team of young talents ready to show their ability.

Who the feck made you moderator? Or are you the Ole police now?

You might want to silence dissenting opinions and, as I've said previously, I'm sure some countries would take you since you seem to have a problem defending your point but rather prefer personal attacks. You've definitely got a problem but go solve it somewhere else.

You called it last summer on AWB. I was sceptical and thought he might improve but it’s clear he’ll never be up to standard attacking wise.

Have nothing against your home. I'm making the point that they have played at the highest level and between them, have coached within the club and outside as well. It's unfair to just look at what happens within the frame of your TV screen on matchday (you don't see all the movements) and blame it on the coaches. When we were ripping through teams, there waa obviously structure in our attack. Ole has actually talked about this during an in depth interview, and mentioned that he employs a mix at the final third. There are sequences to ensure attacking players make the right movements to end up at the right positions, but then he gives them some freedom at certain areas of the pitch to make off the cuff decisions and optimise their creativity. I actually like that. Else you get LVG-esque robots.

Different players have different strengths and weaknesses, and teams need to find a good balance. We were woeful in defence before and only last season, teams regularly attacked our RB position with loads of success. Ole moved to fix that hole decisively with someone more comfortable in defence than attack (AWB), and it's not been that much a problem with Shaw in the side. Not every side plays with two hyper-forward thinking fullbacks like Liverpool. With Shaw (the more forward thinking of our fullbacks out), we are suddenly relying heavily on AWB for something I don't believe he was ever brought in for.

Shaw was regularly underrated in these parts, but not having his dribbling at pace and ability to bring the ball out from defence has left us in a bit of a pickle. The runs he used to make to create space for Rashford are sorely missed as well. Keeping Rashford (who's obviously struggling) on is one I'm unable to appreciate mind you!

Oh - Pogba wasn't isolated in midfield today by the way, Fred was playing quite close to him so they're definitely seeing the same issues. They can't just be sorted by the click of a finger obviously.

He's got next season to progress. If we don't progress at all next season, then questions need to be asked, but for now he's here to stay.

Enough of the shouty shouting. It's exhausting to read and quite frankly pathetic.

I still hope I'm wrong mate, but a club of our stature should always have fullbacks who are technically very good on the ball, which should be an absolute prerequisite for the role. Wan Bissaka is more a CB than a fullback, and we really need Ethan Laird to live up to his potential or else I fear we will have to look for a new RB in the coming seasons.

And I agree with your assessment that once we sort the fullback conundrum then the football will flow. The midfield and attack suffer IMO due to our fullbacks (excluding Shaw) and we don't look very fluid.

You can.

Most "Ole In" are just exhausted of people shouting Ole out asap.

Now I would LOVE IT if everything transpires to be a romantic story of Ole being our Fergie regen, but I'm not blind enough to stay with supporting him if over time he shows no progression, nothing that we can return to glory. But to me he absolutely is showing promise for me right now. I back him right now and I hope to be able to keep backing him cause that would be glorious, and right now nothing is telling me that can't happen.

I didn't watch the game so my opinion is not in relation to tonight's result. It was an Europa League Quarter Final - doesn't matter who the opponents are, anything can happen in a cup tie and going by the highlights - we were very unlucky not to score three or four.

I don't think Ole is the man to guide us a league title, but I think he's the man for the interim for where we are as a club at present. We are finally rebuilding the right way - slow and steadily we are getting a balance to the team. I think he'll be with us for a couple of more seasons - to which I hope he'll solidify us as a top 4 finisher before the club realises that he may not be the one to get that long awaited league title. I hope he's the man - but I just can't see it.

One loss in twenty four is a fantastic achievement for him - and next season will be interesting to see if he can build on this again. The last time we went on a good unbeaten run when he joined - it felt more a honeymoon period. I hope this isn't deja-vu.

We've got a hard tie coming up - be it Wolves or Sevilla, and then seeing Inter or Shakhtar/Basel in final - hopefully we'll have some luck in the game(s) because I think we're running on empty.

Yeah I was waiting on him to start producing the good offensively but then you start noticing the little things. How he just doesn’t want the ball sometimes. It’s literally his job and he needs to be very good at it. There is also no close control there whatsoever, you don’t tend to pick it up at his age, especially when he was already a winger. I see him taking people on only when he’s one on one and he can kick-and-rush it but it’s just so hit and hope. Reminds me of some of my mates with whom I used knock the ball about — they were just all over the place. They knew that they had to get passed the player but they did it without any skill or panache. When it happened they were almost surprised. It’s exactly the feeling I get off him.

As for CB, I wouldn’t even play him there to be honest. I’m not sure about his heading or his positioning for that matter but he’s obviously a fantastic tackler.

I agree I wouldn't play him as a CB either mate because apart from his tackling there's alot missing defensively to play the role.

But what his inclusion will do is help us defensively but cost us offensively because he doesn't have the natural instinct of a fullback in the final third.

Im hoping on Laird now realising his potential and displacing him. I doubt we will be spending top dollar on a RB after AWB and Dalot. Any idea when Laird might be ready? Can’t come soon enough for me to be honest. Just hope he can make it because it would really transform us I think.

Laird is fit and ready but I don't believe he'll be risked in our remaining two games in the UEL. His opportunity will arrive next season.

We've also signed two young fullbacks from Barca and Madrid who are still very young but both seem to have the attributes required to develop into the players a forward thinking progressive club would want.

Yeah I was thinking of next season for Laird. Heck, I’d be happy if he had some really good performances next season and gave Ole something to think about and maybe the season after displace AWB. Also forgotten about those two full backs that came in. Hopefully we hit the jackpot with them.

A Norwegian PE teacher with zero style of play and zero game plan that has taken his team into the semi finals of the FA Cup, the semi finals of the league cup, the semi finals of the Europa League and third place in the league in his first full season....
Give any random poster the same budget here and I think they would do equally well.

3rd in the league. Semis in cup competition and now semis in Europa. If someone had offered me this before the season, I would bitten their hands off.

Good job for his first full season. Hopefully we go on to win this competition.
A very decent first full season, this is the first United side since the 2008/09 season to reach three semi finals in the same campaign.

Our midfield is getting compromised with the system of three attackers up front. It works when all three in form. But since Rashford is struggling (which is okay) there is no point constantly playing him regardless. Once a spot is free Ole can use it different tactical ways, for example, add McT/Matic and push Fred bit up in the midfield.

Ole seems right for us at the moment. The football we are playing is brilliant at times.

There aren’t many better sides in the world currently so he’s doing fantastic. Still improvements to be made but let’s face it you can say that about every side in the world this season barring Liverpool, Bayern & possibly PSG.

We aren’t exactly alone in that assessment.

I think a more astute coach can solve a lot of those issues.

Just the way Klopp makes up for his unimaginative midfield by aggressively playing Robertson and Trent quite far forward. Guardiola does the opposite, as his fullbacks aren't up to much so he makes it work with two very attacking 8/10s.
