Zorc has boxed himself into a corner with his post-deadline comments informing us that Sancho is staying another year (and clearly instructing senior squad to tweet similar comments). If he sells Sancho this summer, not only will his reputation take a severe hit among the squad and club associates, but negotiating future transfer deals will prove trickier due to him being unreliable. He must keep Sancho or lose face.

In your honest opinion, would Zorc be willing to harm his reputation and sell Sancho to United if Woodward stumps up the required fee of £108-120 million?
Who cares about Zorc’s face? No one.

The flaw here is if there was such an agreement between Dortmund and Sancho, then United would have known the date was firm and this would have been one of the simplest transfers of all time.
Or United didn't want to / were not able to pay the asking price and tried to haggle. This did not turn out to work and Dortmund are now saying they won't sell. All I am saying is that I find that scenario a lot more plausible in conjunction with Zorc's statement. And unlike a lot of people here I believe I have a more nuanced impression of his way of dealing with transfers and do not believe him to be a bullshitter.

How many home games have we had?

SU, Bournemouth, Southampton, West Ham and LASK.

Thats £25m, so where you are getting £100m from I am not sure.

Covid has cost other clubs too, not just Manutd.
We make a 100m year from match day revenue

You're free to not trust in a player, but you can hardly use that lack as an argument for a lower than asked price
We should take a leaf out of Bayerns playbook to be fair, start planning with the player and agent behind the scenes, etc

More like, if that's the case, you should put it to a rest. If you want to buy something you'll need to pay the asking price, simple as.
The guy has produced stellar stats over the past 2 seasons, yet he gets declared some sort of unproven talent just to bolster some "fair price"-narrative.
If Sancho was your player and some club stopped by arguing like that, you'd declare them insane.
Difference is he would’ve done it in the PL and not a one club league.

We obviously spoke to them, given that we were interested in doing such a deal, but Dybala preferred to stay at Juventus and that was it.

Don't be daft.
We wouldnt have spoken to them for several days, while also figuring out the image rights and talking to Juve , if it was a simple no from the get-go. Dybale thought he didnt have a choice while his agents tried to prolong it for Juve to change their minds, but it was always a possibility he could move.

Dont be silly now.

I've always been curious what does a transfer request really do?.

Edit: I realise sancho loses money in loyalty fee but that can be negated through his contract from United, I never really see the point of transfer requests.

Can somebody explain further?.
Players lose their loyalty bonus. But now the club has an excuse to sell him without "losing face", as some posters above mentioned.
Also it's an indicator that the player indeed wants to leave, not just going through the motion. So the selling club may lose some bargaining.

Disagree. If United knew there was a firm deadline then there's still an opportunity to haggle but as the deadline gets closer, they know they have to increase their offer if they want the player. This is the usual posturing from Zorc on a big deal. If it was dead we'd be seeing briefings from United confirming this.

The old adage "buyer beware" comes to mind. Basically, United would do well to be wary of a player's past success at Dortmund being an indicator of success in the Premier League based on their own experience. Auba offers a riposte to this, however.

I know it's been mentioned many times, but it's worth repeating just how absurd Sancho's productivity is. At his age, most attacking talents are just being praised for their dribbling and potential, he's well ahead of the developmental curve. I'll fully understand if we don't end up signing him given the financial situation, but just want to emphasize what a massive miss it will be. It's really going to hurt if we see him in another kit next summer :(

Sure, but you still cannot use your buyers' remorse of the past as a means to get a discount on a current player

Due diligence, it's never a simple no from the start when they first needed to find out how badly Juventus wanted him gone.
Image rights in itself would never have prevented the deal.

It fell apart because Dybala wasn't keen on joining us, no reason to walk into that trap again

No worries about Sancho on that front. He's miles than the other Dortmund purchases. And will be much better than Aubamayang too.

First of all, statements like this is very similar to very many other high profile transfers , both for Dortmund and United.
This seems to be the core argument here to discredit anything Zorc says or does. In my memory there have been two instances of Dortmund's higher ups going against a public statement they had made:
  • They claimed they would not sell Dembele who kicked up the most childish fuss I have seen to date. They ended up selling him for ~€140m after there was no way in hell it would have been possible for him to reintegrate into the team. Basically at that point they offloaded a cnut that was of little worth to the team and as it would turn out for Barca as well
  • Watzke said not all three out of Mkhitaryan, Hummels and Gündogan would be sold. From what I have read in this matter Mkhitaryan had given his word to stay and changed his mind once United came calling. A move that did not turn out too well for him, which came to no surprise to anyone following his three year stint at Dortmund which saw him struggle in his first two seasons.
I think these are the two prominent cases that are cited time and again in order to paint Zorc as some sort of spineless greedy businessman, as someone who has monitored his transfer dealings quite closely for over a decade I believe that this characterization is nonsensical. He might go against his word when it is for the welfare of the club (see Dembele) but I simply don't see that to be the case here.

Secondly, none of our own briefs had says anything about the deal is off, which they would do if it is really off.
No idea how United conduct transfers, in the end it is Dortmund's decision.

I think Dortmund is saying it just so they can get an replacement cheaper before the deal goes through.
That would imply that every other club Dortmund would do business with are utter morons. If they try to sign a properly talented winger it is common knowledge that this will have to be in context of a Sancho departure.

Necessary disclaimer for this thread: I do not claim to know the absolute truth, Sancho could still be sold, I would just be surprised.

We're getting mocked in social media by Chelsea fans:lol: apparently they're getting their targets and we're not getting Sancho. This deal looks dead atm.

We all love United
Did he score today? Or gave any interviews? I still remembered i watched a few of Inter’s friendlies just to hear what Wesley Sneijder would say after the match regarding his future

If we see him go to another team I don’t think the board will ever be able to live that down. If we don’t go for him this summer I fully expect us to bid more than other clubs and offer a higher wage than other clubs. We’ve quite openly been trying to court him for almost two years now. We would have every egg from all the poultry, fish and reptiles under the sun on our face if we miss out on him.

This may be true, as mentioned, I am not an expert in United's transfer strategies. I guess we will just have to see, personally I just don't see the point in Zorc giving this statement if they intend to sell the player and I would be super gutted if they did. And I fully expected Sancho to move this summer.

For me, it´s not a catastrophe if we can´t sigh Sancho this window. We need more than we can afford anyway, so spend the money on Grealish instead, and bring in Sancho next summer. Going by recent form, one could also argue that we are just as much in need of a left wing as a right wing (Rashford contra Greenwood), and Grealish can also fill in as a nr. 10. Then perhaps we can afford strengthening in other positions as well, such as CB and CDM.

The reports leading up to this week have been that both teams have actually agreed on the price of 120m euros. The only disagreement is around the structure of it and how much is paid in each installment with Dortmund wanting a bigger chunk in the first payment. This is what has been reported anyhow. However, it wouldn’t be surprising if Woodward actually bid £20m in reality with Lingard and a packet of condoms as our offer.
That made me laugh.

Deepthroating information to Howard Nurse.
All this talk about how Zorc can’t sell now as he’ll lose face is naive. All they have to do is spin it and say that they knew he was always going this summer and they made us pay x more than we were willing to pay and got more than they thought they would by taking the stance they did. Add a few briefs about Sancho being unprofessional and bingo - Dortmund win this round of transfer wars. Everyone will lap that right up as it’s an anti-United story making Woody like like a moron just like they have with the Sporting president saying he’d have sold Bruno for 15m less. It’s not a hard story to spin.

Problem is Grealish won't come cheap now. 80m on Grealish or 110m on sancho. ?

I think the £110m for Sancho has more value to it than the £80m for Grealish, mostly because of the level that Sancho is playing and what you would be getting for that price. No doubt that there will be arguments as to why the money is better spent on Grealish instead, I'm sure.

What we don't want to do is sign a lacklustre alternative because we ended up getting neither.
