So this is really happening. Interesting to see how Ole manages De Gea and Henderson.

I'm sure what our end game is here. Its ridiculous to have a second choice keeper earning 100K a week, and its a lot more ridiculous having a second choice keeper earning 350k a week (not sure if accurate). If we have given Henderson that contract, could we have a deal in place to sell De Gea?

I dont think so. Both will stay here for the season and if De Gea doesnt improve, he should be off while losing the number 1 spot. I imagine that is how it will happen.

I think we want to see how De Gea will perform with a serious contender next to him.

It is not ideal, the wage they are on that is, but at one point meaning, this or next season we will have to keep them both and see who is more suitable to stay as number 1. Real did it, Barca did it, and Chelsea did the same and they managed well with two established GKs. I think it is wise to keep Henderson and let him fight it out with DDG. The problem is what we do with Romero?

The problem is, who would want to sign a second choice goalkeeper on astronomical wages? Answer= nobody! Why we panicked so much into giving him that contract I’ll never know

I don't get why people think wage as something they will be earning every week. Those will be based on performance and team bonus.

Maybe because we see Henderson as our future no. 1, if not this coming season, then in an year or two, and we don't want him looking at opportunities elsewhere. If we sign him on this contract, he will see it as a clear sign that the club values him and does see him as a future no. 1.

It would be really foolish for us to sell De Gea this season. Why not have them both compete for the place and see at the end of the season who to keep. That's how big club behave.

Im not sure rotating keepers is a very good idea. How can a player be confident if he's getting dropped once he makes a mistake? Im all for questioning if De Gea is still considered a long term solution here, but to have both on long contracts with high wages benefits no one, and will make it much harder to sell either of them once a decision is made.

If Henderson is here to fight it our with De Gea, to prove he is going to be our first choice keeper for the future, then he should have earn 100k a week no? 100k a week for a player we are admitting might not be a first team player sets a terrible precedent.

I’m almost certain that a large amount of the reported wage is based on appearances and performance.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s on around 60k basic with appearances and clean sheets added to his total wage.

Romero is on 70k week. This is what happens when you have top class players fighting for a position

All of those examples led to one of the GK being unhappy and made their feelings known to the public. It always ended with the club keeping the younger one and letting the elder one go. Can't imagine the drama happens at United which will definitely be intensified by the media and how we could possibly get rid of de Gea.

The bottom three poll options are basically "any other than DDG".

I’d sell De Gea personally. Not sure who’d buy him in the Covid market though.

Sick to death of us conceding soft goals because he doesn’t command his area nor does he give any confidence to his defence. We don’t concede a lot of goals but every time we do they are crucial goals that can easily be avoided.

Have a feeling we’ll look back on this and wonder why in a global pandemic we decided to pay this much to keep a GK whilst potentially pissing off a world class one.

Doubtful. Giving Henderson a longer contract protects his transfer fee. Makes bad financial sense to save money on his salary, only for him to walk for a fraction of his transfer value in a years time, or for free in two years time.

Henderson is going to get a shot at being the number 1 and it's going to take a couple years to be clear if he's good enough to be relied upon at this level. Let alone being world class...we don't need a world class goalkeeper, although it doesn't hurt. He is the future. DDG isn't going to resign a new contract at the same or near the same level of his current contract....and its not coming with the assurance of being the clear number 1.

Unless he’s taking over next season it’s a ludicrous contract.

Just think we could sell him and invest in priority positions

Not really. He could move to another club in two years time for nothing and get a big sign on fee somewhere else. That gets factored into his valuation.

Well GK is a priority within 2 years, so the club has been proactive and has an in house solution that is now.
GKs can and do play to 36+ easily at a very good level.

Just think Hendo should be loaned or sold

I know you don’t rate him for some reason, but he’s still worth more to us on a longer contract, wherever he goes next year.
No I absolutely rate him.

He’s had a terrific season at Sheffield but to put him on 100k before he’s done anything for United on the off chance he’ll be good enough to surpass De Gea is ridiculous.

We could sell him or use him to bring in outfield players rather than rot him or De Gea on the bench for a season.

As I said, his salary is a reflection of his market rate. He’s not going to sign a new contact for too much less money then he could get elsewhere via a big signing on fee as a free agent.

Anyway I think the club should be thinking ahead more then one season at a time to be honest. There’s a question mark over DDG, and Henderson is on our books right now. If De Gea doesn’t improve next season, we’re then looking for a new goalkeeper having sold a good one 12 months earlier. That would be a pretty stupid position to end up in.

De Gea could quite easily last another 5/6 seasons I’m looking at the next 3 seasons as the priority and I don’t see Henderson being a vital cog in that machine either presently or in the next 3 seasons.

We could equally end up in a situation where De Gea flourishes again and Henderson either wastes a year on the bench or helps some either side while we fork out 100k for the pleasure?

It’s also worth pointing out that despite the narrative De Gea ended the season on 2.7 PSXGA so not exactly a terrible season by any standard and not something to be concerned about.

We can win the league with De Gea we’ve done it before but Henderson adapting to the massive pressure of United including the scrutiny that comes with it isn’t a certainty.

I know for a fact Henderson has made just as many point losing mistakes as De Gea yet due to his lower profile they get ignored and aren’t back page headlines.

Having him back and signing a new contract is right first steps.

While I expect De Gea to start upcoming season as a main player, I don't think with Henderson around Ole will be as patient with him. Feck us one or two times and I think Henderson will start getting games.

I don't believe DDG can last another 5 years at Manchester United as the number 1 with those unjustified wages. He shouldn't be the highest paid player on the club anymore and I really hope he has a bounce back year, akin to Schmicheal's last season with United.

Henderson has deserved the right to have the first legitimate chance to take over the number 1 after DDG. He's been patient, he's showed trust in the club, and they should/are repaying him monetarily and with a legitimate opportunity. Whether that's this coming year or the 21/22 season, Henderson will have his shot.

While I agree with Henderson making his fair share of mistakes and he's not experienced to the level of Manchester United or DDG, the long-term picture of GK at Manchester United (a window of 3 years for example), does not include DDG at the end of that window. I think the club may try to offload Romero this transfer window, and go with DDG and Henderson with the clear picture in that DDG going into the 21/22 season will be available to leave Manchester United after many years/a decade of amazing service to the club and easily ranks within the top 3 GKs at United and was regarded the best GK for a number of years in the world alongside Neuer.

DDG will be challenged as the number 1 for the first time since his beginning at United. But he himself should know there's writing on the wall with Henderson being much younger, getting paid well, and improving. DDG will play, as will Henderson, and DDG is helping to groom and push Henderson. Sometimes you have to see and be around the daily pressure and level in order to achieve it on your own. This could be the way forward to Henderson and I'm all for it.

We have to be ruthless. DeGea should have been sold last year tbh. His wages would take care of Sancho

It seems Henderson may be in the squad next season. If so, he should be given a legitimate shot. There’s no sense bringing him back unless you’re prepared to give him an actual opportunity to win the job. Otherwise, he’d be better off playing every match out on loan. This could be a smart move, provided Ole is prepared to be ruthless if need be.

Can't have De Gea as no 2.(especially on his salary).

He is either no 1 or we sell him.
Man Utd are in 4 competitions next season, there's no need to sell De Gea. I'd be the first to admit he had a below average performance this season but De Gea never left us nor complained when he was the best player in the squad for about 3 seasons back to back. He was loyal to us and it's only fair if we return that gesture by giving him another season to prove himself.

Bringing Henderson in should light a fire under De Gea's behind and I expect him to bounce back to form next season. Let Henderson start in the cup games(League Cup and the CL group stage). However, If De Gea's form fails to improve and he drops clangers again, he should naturally lose his #1 position to Henderson until he improves. If he fails to improve throughout the course of the season then selling him would be 100000% justified.

Or, one of the PSG keepers have a mare and they go for DDG leaving Dean as the first choice.

After DDG's performances over the last two seasons, an argument could be made that goalkeeper is a priority position. And Henderson might be the answer.

In another comment you mentioned that goalkeepers often play until 36 at the top level. Normally that's only true for keepers that have a very strong all-round game. DDG, quite simply, does not. He is a goalkeeper who relies almost entirely on his reflexes and athleticism, while the rest of his game is actually quite a bit below average. It's a testament to how ridiculously good his strengths were that it enabled him to more than compensate for the negatives to the point that he was the best in the world for a while, but it was always unlikely that he would have a long career. I'm not sure whether that's the case now and his decline happened even earlier than expected, or whether this in more of a mental and confidence issue. That would be it's own problem.

The problem with him isn't that he doesn't rate Henderson, it's that he refuses to accept the decline of de Gea and still thinks he's world class.

You seem weirdly threatened by Henderson. There’s nothing wrong with giving a young player a chance to compete with the first teamer, and it makes financial sense to tie Henderson down. If De Gea is the better keeper, what’s the problem?

Sell deGea to Chelsea. Make Henderson #1. Romero #2. That's it.
This will save us a ton of cash on wages.
