He really should shave his head again. Was much more intimidating then.

Hope all those people smashing Lindelof for 'doing nothing' while covering the near post space saw Sevilla's first goal. It's a beautiful representation of why covering that space is so important, particularly when you have a spare man in the box. The fact it's Sevilla, it's Luke De Jong scoring, and the cross comes from a near identical position, makes it such an excellent example.

I agree with you about his positioning being ok. I think Maguire was in place to engage Navas if he cut inside and skinned Williams and Lindeloff was there for the first post header. AWB was the one at fault in a positional sense. However, Lindeloff still should not have just let the ball sail past him. It's well within his reach, he needs to get something on it to avoid the tap in. Yes I know it's an awkward ball and he could risk an OG but I think he needs to try head it over the bar, wide of the goal or back the direction it came. Even if AWB is in the correct position, he would still be arielly dominated by De Jong. Lindeloff has shirked the responsibility as he often does in his defending. I would rather see Bailly next season.

The ball was deflected, so I don't think there was anything he could really do to stop it loping over his head.

There is no reasoning when there is a clear agenda

No indeed. I'm not surprised his detractors haven't bothered to try and justify why his positioning was crap when we have a near identical example of what happens when the 'dead space' at the near post isn't covered. Any opportunity to put the boot in.

I don't have an agenda. I like Lindeloff and think he's been decent this season. I still think he can clear the ball though. The deflection occurred the moment the ball was crossed so I don't think it should affect his anticipation. He clearly let's the ball go. He makes no attempt. There was an incedent earlier in the season v Watford where a cross was deflected away from him. He was slated for it on here. That was not his fault. This was.

....a bit off topic but we won't get the best out of any CB without a more vocal and dominant keeper between the sticks.

Really good point and observation

There were 3 United defenders in the box and 1 Sevilla player and yet he was basically unmarked. Skin it whichever way you want, it's poor positioning from both CBs but particularly Lindelof. De Jong against AWB is not a fair match up in the air.

Scored with his feet by the way.

I agree its poor positioning by BOTH CBs, however in that situation AWB needs to pick up the man. Also the near post does need to be covered

If there's one attacker in the box Lindelof just needs to know where he is and cut the ball out, simple as that. If Maguire has been dragged out too wide that's not an excuse for wandering over as well and leaving their only attacker unattended.

So we don't disagree then since I said BOTH cbs are out of position.
I will not absolve AWB for not recognising that and letting De Jong walk off him to tap in to goal

The only thing we're disagreeing about is whether covering a zone is important when there's only one attacker in the box. Forget the zone, you need to know where the man is and Lindelof should be taking the responsibility away from AWB in that position.

Lindelof is simply not good enough.

We are not Ive said Lindelof has made a mistake in his positioning.

Where we disagree is that I am not absolving AWB for not recognising that and doing something about it. Thats defending you cover your teammate you expect the worst. You do not switch off and say well thats not my man

I was going to say the same thing. We can all criticise him and Maguire and they are not the best but we are not getting the best out of them because of DeGea. The two goals we conceded could have been avoided if we had a commanding keeper.
Why? Because he could and should have been shouting instructions to his defenders. Look at how Big Peter and VDS organised our defense. They also had better defenders so it's extremely vital for the keeper to do so now with not so great defenders.

Wouldn’t mind an upgrade but I’ve started to come round to the fact that I think he’s very unfairly targeted, and is far better than he is given credit for. He doesn’t have any outstanding physical quality, which is probably why he is immediately seen as mediocre - but he knows how to defend. He reads and positions very well, and typically has great reactions/reflexes.

That being said, I agree that we could well upgrade him.

Agree. They weren't shy of giving players a bollocking when they didn't listen either. DG is very quiet, rarely comes off his line, doesn't come for corners and when he does would sooner punch than catch it.

Saw some stats in the henderson thread showing that DDG was among the worst in the league at taking crosses last season. I knew it was a weakness, but that surprised me.

In contrast to Harry Maguire, Victor has made some headlines himself on his vacation, but instead positive ones. Running after and stopping a purse-thief who snatched a 90-year-old woman's handbag.
He ran after and tackled the 30-year old man who snatched it and held him down until police showed up.

Here's a news article on the subject (in swedish): LINK

He wasn't unattended though. AWB was literally touch tight. We saw a near identical situation in the final where De Jong made a near post run, blind side to the CB and scored from the position the second of your two centrebacks should be occupying. It was the perfect example of exactly why you cover the front post when you have a man spare in the box. It's nonsensical for Lindelof to drop deeper to mark the striker, leaving AWB doing absolutely nothing. If AWB did his job, then we wouldn't even be discussing it.

Qulaity from him. Very good anticipation to mop up that danger, as Maguire was left in no man's land.

So he is capable of getting tight to a runner!

I'll admit, "Maguire will get arrested" and "Lindelöf will stop a thief" weren't headlines I thought I'd see this summer

Nice to see atleast one player in our team doing something productive during the break rather than get drunk and fight in Mykonos.

The centre back has to mark the striker, I'm sorry, it's just obvious you shouldn't leave that mismatch when there's only one forward in the box.

You've got to count yourself unlucky to rob somebody's bag and turn around to find a Premier League footballer chasing after you.

People are way off wanting a quicker defender than Lindelöf. This show he got the speed required!

His initial position is poor but there was simply no time for AWB to pass his the man into Lindelof in the situation.

AWB should have just tracked him and possibly prevented the goal.
