Squad is out

Maguire, Walker & Sterling but no Grealish!

A few interesting inclusions with Greenwood, Foden, Phillips (never played above Championship level) and Henderson looking for their debuts.

Saka misses out.

Including the United/City players is a bit of a joke considering they are still on holiday.

Southgate is also trolling by having the likes of Michael Keane in the squad over Chris Smalling too.

No AWB which people will complain about but shouldn’t really. He’s good but he’s never going to play RB when England have TAA.

Erm... is there a left back in that squad?

Guessing mings can play there but seems very weak.

...Sterling?

Even if he was tested negative, he should've been asked to quarantine.

No Young is the biggest disaster with that squad. He has dominated in Italy and there are no other left backs.

I am not a Wolves fan by any means but what on earth has Coady gotta do to earn a call up to this squad. I am also hugely surprised about Jack and think he has also overlooked full back talents in James/Saka as well. Saka is very strange because he can play LWB and with no Chilwell there it seems crazy having no one in the squad at all.

Makes little sense surely. Why would someone who tested negative be forced to quarantine?

Saka has all the evidence he needs to come home and declare for Nigeria. Literally every single senior left-back is injured, not one left-back in the squad - yet he’s overlooked, while his agemates have made the squad. He’s been as good as any young player this season.

Come to the Eagles, the Lions will never love you like we will!

It's an interesting one, especially as he seems pretty good on the ball. I don't see it with Mings at all.

Coady is a good shout, but does it depend if he is too used to playing in a certain defensive setup, but if you don't try him you don't find out if he can adapt to another.

I would say Saka is the greater loss to the squad. Dual-nationality, being courted by Nigeria. Only 18 years old and could comfortably nail down that position in a couple of years. 4 goals and 11 assists in 2767 minutes . For comparison Trent AA had 3 goals and 3 assists in 2,744 minutes in his break through season at a year older too. If England miss out on him it's a travesty.

Three RBs but no LB? How do Winks and Ward-Prowse make it over Grealish as midfield options? Some very strange choices

If Grealish can’t get in with Maddison & Chamberlain injured it’s clear Southgate just doesn’t fancy him.

Also, surely Saka, Bertrand etc would be better than no left back?

Southgate’s selections really to baffle at times. 3 right backs for 1 position, but no left backs.

Saka yes but Reece James is up against Trent, Walker, Trippier, AWB.
Left back is weird. Not a single out-and-out left back included. I know Chilwell and Shaw are injured, but Young has been excellent for Inter. Williams could have been called up to fill a gap.

I know Chilwell and Shaw are unavailable but surely you have to pick at least one of Bertrand, Rose, Young or Saka.

I'm delighted AVB hasn't been selected. He needs a rest and it will only benefit us If he's not involved. I wish Maguire would have been pulled from the squad too

The more players getting rest in before we start the season the better.

Which is how the game is but instead we bought a defensive one.
I’m not taking a side, just simply stating the reasons he won’t pick him. He doesn’t like Grealish either for whatever reason. Some managers don’t fancy certain players. Deschamps won’t pick Laporte, who for me is top 5 CB in the world.

Think Southgate managed him briefly in the u21s. Some rumblings that he was unimpressed with the demands Grealish's agent was making whilst he switched. Think Grealish is in court today too so calling him up wouldn't look good.

No left back - where is Saka?

Hope Mason gets some minutes.

Good to see Kalvin Phillips in the squad. He is the stand-out option in midfield there, alongside Phil Foden. Though Henderson being unavailable makes it look a lot worse, but England desperately need to produce a good proper central midfielder. Apart from Henderson who I'm not even that into, it is just AMs and DMs right now. JWP and Winks should have no business starting games for England.

Grealish should have stuck with Ireland, road to nowhere choosing England unless Southagte leaves.

Usian Bolt was just quarantined because of a infection in a party he was in. Raheem Sterling was also in said party so he might be quarantined as well but the game is too far away for it to matter.

Iceland are pretty bad. The current NT manager has messed up the near future by no renewing the squad at all. Basically you've got many of the same players that beat England at the Euros. Some of them are back in semi-amateur league Iceland yet still automatically get the call up whist younger professionals playing regularly in much stronger leagues (Denmark, Russia etc) barely get to be part of the group. Southgate takes the oppposite approach and picks players that barely play for their team. This squad is more than good enough to beat Iceland who shouldn't even be in League A.

Forget left back, is there anyone who is left footed in the squad? Seems very predictable

Raheem has taken a test and is negative.

Why is Grealish not picked? Seems harsh.
