I wonder, has there ever been a reliable source of him running anything or influencing a decision by the club?

You do realise your supporting a player that’s dragged your club through the mud whilst your at your lowest, not to mention he wants to jump ship and play for a team nobody in Spain would have known existed 10 years ago.

Strange.
yes, when Xavi and puyol won’t go near this board you know Messi is right. The team is at their lowest because of the mismanagement of this board. And that team that no one knew existed ten years ago has been destroying the epl in recent years. Even if I don’t care for them personally

nope, just deluded fans who haven’t got the slightest clue what is going on. If Messi did call the shots the managers and players would be very very different. Not even saying he’d do a good job doing it, probably wouldn’t, but it sure as hell wouldn’t be what the board has done in recent years

And what is fake about that? He’s contractually tied to Barcelona. That’s a fact. But who needs facts when you’ve got emotional fanboyism to cling on to hey:wenger:
That is not a fact. It was a fact if there was a court judgement. As of now, this is open to interpretation and by the very definition not a fact.

No player can be held against his will. He could have easily walked had he wanted to move to another club. There is more to this than simply Messi being against the board and Barca not winning. He should know more than most no team dominates forever. Team success is cyclical.

Only the greatest player in history
No he isn't. He's not even the best Argentinian player ever. I dare him to win something with a small club like Napoli (during the Serie A golden age) or the WC with a less then perfect Argentina.

because he kept trying to make a meeting with the board for an exit and they kept ghosting him. Finally when he had No other option he sent in the fax. Quit being ignorant and watch the interview. Wake up
Quit being ignorant and take one persons point of view as fact? Ok.

After giving up on Argentina, he now wants to give up on Barcelona after a few drubbings?

Not the best mentality.

You are criticising a player for activating a clause in their contract because 'they have no legal right' to.

It is a subjective view that he has no legal right. You are wrong that it is a fact and your murder analogy is hilarious.
He is not attempting to enforce a right that he believes he has, not attempting to get away with a crime he's committed.
But he’s wrong. If he had a right to leave for free he would’ve left for free. He hasn’t. Those are the only facts here. Not what you think could happen if he went to court.

Diego might have been the greatest for a short period of time, but Leo's done for 15 years.

And Napoli had a decent team at the time - Careca, Ferrara, De Napoli, Alemao, Crippa, Carnevale etc. It wasn't like Diego + 10 others. And the WC is a weak argument in assigning greatness.

That’s not how contracts work
Obviously it is in this case since there are contradicting parts in the contract caused by Corona. The season didn't end at June 10. So the next piece of misinformation you put out there.

That doesn't give him the right to dictate how a club is run. He doesn't own the club and definitely shouldn't try to control Barcelona.
What are you talking about? Like honestly - running the club how? Is he picking the managers? The players coming in, going out? The tactics? What exactly is your bone here.

no player in this generation that is a top 5 player has won something major with a small team.
And that Argentina team was damn good, not a one man show dragged by maradonna.

https://lastwordonsports.com/2016/0...-cup-squad-was-much-more-than-diego-maradona/
That is why Maradona was the best player the world have ever seen. A guy who won the lot with a smallish side despite facing some of the toughest and meanest defences in football history at a time when defenders could kick forwards arses into submission.

Regarding the 1986 world cup, Maradona was Argentina's top scorer with 5 goals and produced the most assists (5 assists). His goals included 2 against England in the quarter finals and another 2 goals in the semi finals against Belgium. So yes Maradona did drag Argentina to success.

It's so easy winning trophies with Iniesta, Xavi and co. It far more difficult to do that with a less perfect squad.

Diego had his demons and his share of injuries as well. However he was by far the superior player. Regarding Napoli just ask any of them if they had a chance in hell of winning the Serie A title without him. He was everything for Napoli. FFS there are still shrines of the guy at the city. He's a saint there.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's in cahoots with the next president to cause this circus. Probably promised a seat on the board by the future president and who knows a future shot at being the head.
This is a really wild assertion. He's a player who wants to fecking win because he's seen his best years ruined in a failed football project. He's a reserved, family type not courting publicity or having political aspirations to run the club. Jesus fckn Christ.

This shit about that the greatest players have to win trophies with poor-mediocre teams is bullshit. The greatest players want to play with the best team mates and be paid as much as possible. James Vardy isn't suddenly a GOAT because he won the PL with Leicester or Alan Shearer because he won a PL with Blackburn. In the case of Shearer he would probably would have been ranked higher if he went to United. Maradonna is without doubt a GOAT, but his club trophy haul is unimpressive for a GOAT and he managed a grand total of 2 european cup goals because he spent most of his european club career in Napoli.

Messi has said himself that Bartomeu told him that he could decide himself if he wanted to stay or leave at the end of the season and when Messi said he wanted to leave Bartomeu backtracked and said he couldn't (or pay €700m to release himself) Why would Messi lie about this? To me it sounds like a gentlemans agreement was reached and Bartomeu screwed him over big time.

In his interview Messi also said he would never take the club to court because they have given him everything which doesn't sound too far fetched.

Yes, he's trying to do all that, and worse trying to change the president voted in by the members. My bone is he should concentrate on playing and leave the politics to those voted in to run the club. If the board are incompetent members will have a chance to oust him at the next elections. I'm not sure why that is so difficult to understand.

I know all about Diego - you're not saying anything I don't already know. Far superior player is not true. Diego had more charisma, he could carry a team with his force of personality but also had a destructive side that could leave the team in the shit. During his last years, he never showed up for training and he was essentially partying with Camorra and doing coke and prostitutes from Sunday night until Thursday morning and Ferlaino could do sweet f-all to him. And the impact on the squad was detrimental. He had an amazing 85-87 and then was running on fumes. By the way he asked Ferlaino several times to be sold publicly which is something you're admonishing Leo for

that 1986 squad was good and not just maradonna. Club football is played at a higher level than ever before these past 15-20 years. Maradonna’s longevity wasn’t nearly as strong as Messi’s. He was obviously an all time great, but Messi has far more records than maradonna and his Argentina squad was way more flawed. Without Messi Argentina wouldn’t even qualify for the WC. Argentina didn’t even need maradonna back when they won it 78. It was a good generation.

He may very well be telling the truth about that. But that’s not what is in his contract. If it was, he wouldn’t be there anymore.

No he's not, you don't seem to have a good understanding of the club dynamics.

Barcelona signed him on a piece of napkin, in a restaurant. That was good enough for him and his father to sign for the club. He's concentrated on playing ever since and became the player he is today. Scoring 600+ goals, winning 30+ major trophies. Never ever has he waded on Presidential politics, he's concetrated on letting his feet do the talking. But this President told him verbally he could leave, and he's miffed. Barto's got previous to lying/committing fraud but Messi is lying?

OK

I never realised how much people disliked Messi until I read this thread.
If anyone likes football they would never dislike Messi. I have all the respect for him as a player and very few would question him being one of the greatest of his generation, possibly ever to grace a football pitch. This is a debate about his behaviour beyond football. At least that's my stand.

Read the contract have you?

The clause in his contract ended on June 10 by all accounts. Do you know how dates and calendars work, or are they fake news as well?

or the circumstances meant it was no longer to his advantage to pursue the clause.

This would never stand up in court.

Messi: He promised me this, your honour.

Bartomeu: I cannot ever recall promising he could move for free.

Case dismissed.

PS: Why would a president allow/promise a player of Messi's calibre to go on a free and lose the club 100's of millions? I don't even think the decision would be Bartomeu to make alone (a gentleman's agreement). Surely the club directors would have to be informed of such an agreement.
