This season he'll play the squad role that he was meant so hopefully he won't play the 50 matches that he played last season. He should aim for around 10 goal contributions across all competitions. Very achieveable target since he already surpassed that the previous season.

Superb for Wales last night. Very good assist and also had a brilliant assist for a goal that was ruled out too.

Good to hear that he played well. Much needed preseason games for our players.

Glad for him. Exactly what he needs. Hopefully will give him a shot in the arm going into new season.

No no no. I have been told on here that Wales games in his natural position don't count.
That ‘natural position’ malarkey was disproven over and over last season. Not to say that he can’t or won’t improve, but let’s just call it as it is and say he hasn’t been very good for much of his debut season. Not because it’s all the managers fault for using him wrong. He’s been rubbish, left or right, for months.

Nice run and simple pick out for the goal. Hopefully he comes back to Utd and just does the simple things he did so well when he first started

I accept most of that I was more aiming at a handful of people who stated he was practically useless as a footballer. His performances for Wales had been better than his club ones and at least showed there is a footballer in there at some level.

It could also be to do with the lower class of opposition, as well. Bulgaria and Finland are hardly Premier League standard teams.

It may just be that he is Championship standard.

To be fair, he’s been shit on the left for us too.

Playing well against Bulgaria & Finland doesn’t really tell us much. It’s like Lingard being MOTM against Tranmere & LASK, means next to nothing.

I haven’t seen anything that suggests he belongs in a United shirt bar 2 cracking goals over a year ago against Palace & Southampton.

This. James does not have the football IQ to play to the level we need him to currently. I hope he learns and knows where to and when to release the ball. The amount of time he ran into players when there's space to attack were baffling.

I hope if Sancho joins he will learn his game from him and improve.

Under a tree.
I think people are writing him off too quickly, it was his first year in the PL and second full season as a pro.
Given his pace, as much as we would like him to automatically be a impact player off the bench, he clearly needs regular playing time and rhythm to his game at this stage off his development. Personally I think he should have rotated more with Rashford on the left, who was hardly in scintillating form himself after lockdown.

Disagree. Which games?

Majority of his performances as LW is good, 6/10 at least but often 7/10. Maybe few game is bad but rarely too bad, like around 5/10 minimum, can't remember which one but definitely a lot more consistently good. As RW, it's inconsistent as hell, it's annoying, and usually 2 to 5/10. Sometimes he'll pull in a good play but then rubbish afterwards. Maybe just the game against Spurs where he's 6/10.

He’s been shit in every game since about December. Some of them have been on the left. The one in most recent memory is Norwich in the cup.

Actually, I’m being unfair, he played quite well in the away game at LASK in March. So he’s had one good game for us this year.

So we have come to the "he's being played out of position" stage already. How can we forgett how that statement gave TFM, Mata, Pereira, Lingard, Rojo amongst others a free ride for 2-3 seasons until we realized theyre just shit.

I have no doubt that James will become a very good player. He will surprise many of you this season going by what Giggs has been saying and his performances during the international break. The problems in his game are very easy to fix. Don't shoot on goal if you can pass to someone in a better position. He has been doing this with Wales. Giggs also said James being on the bench most times last season enabled him to rest. So he starts very fresh now. I believe in James.

He started off well, and then faded badly by the end of the season.

Still, he’s young and his pace alone would make him a decent squad option. Just needs to be coached more in the final third. If we are 1/2 goals up, his pace would keep defenders on the back foot.

i know it was just a friendly game, but he's exactly where he let off last season. Another poor performance, its looking more and more likely that he wont make it here. If by december he hasnt improved we should look to get rid, dont need another deadwood on a long contract situation.

Hope to get 5 and 8 from him this year with lower minutes. I know I am a dreamer, but hopefully with less pressure with someone coming in would do him good.

I can’t see how after watching his play over the last 12 months or so that you can honestly give that opinion.
I get the optimism and hoping he can improve as a player but to say his problems are easy to fix is laughable.
His technique is poor, final ball and decision making equally as bad and he’s about 4ft and very lightweight.
He needs to put in some serious work in after training (just like AWB with his crossing) to give himself a chance to make it here otherwise he will be gone within a year or two.
He could develop into a nice bench player that is brought on last 15 when defences are tired especially if we are winning and teams are pushing forward. His pace is something you can’t teach and that’s a great asset to have but at this level you need more.

I just watched the highlights and I don't think he was poor.
He created our best chances - it s not his fault that there was no one in the six yard box to put them in.

No definitely he was not poor as you are suggesting

Only saw the first half but really wasn’t impressed by him, basic skills weren’t good enough and doesn’t seem to make good decisions.

I struggle to see how he has a future here.

He looked decent to me. Don't know why our fans are always looking for a scapegoat in our squad.

He plays like a youngster who isn't yet ready for 1st team football.

His decision making is terrible, he lacks composure and does things in a hurried fashion mostly to avoid contact that would exploit his physical and technical weakness.

You make it sound as if he provided chances that the strikers failed to convert, he made a bunch of crosses to empty spaces. As if he either dont look before making the pass, his final decition making is really poor.

It may be because Im frustrated with him but I see him as a bang average player who's really far from the quality we need.

Some posters seems to have a fixation about a specific player.
In amateur football it s usually the village idiot who starts bashing a particular player as soon as something goes wrong. Then when team loses, he would want the coach sacked immediately :)

Nothing about needing a scapegoat, just calling a poor player poor. Rubbish Yesterday, so many good opportunitys, just as many bad decisions.

I've only seen the highlights, but i saw him put 3balls in that should have lead to assists, only for none of our forwards to be attacking the goal. I dont think James is fabulous, far from it, but he really isn't helped by a lack of desire from our forwards to score

Same here - you don't need to be an expert to reach that conclusion.

Given we're likely going into the season without a right-sided forward, hopefully Ole et al are using him as the least bad option. A full year of training and performing on that side should at least improve him.

If nothing else, he should be able to work towards a passable Valencia impersonation - stay on his right foot, be fast over 2 yards than anyone, cross hard with right foot.

One of Valencia’s biggest attributes was his strength though. He had great balance & was rarely knocked off the ball. James would get knocked over by a gust of wind.

Traore at Wolves is a more sutible comparison with Valencia than James.
