Merson is one of the most clueless pundits out there at the moment, but it seems to be a trend. There are many in these positions that don't have a clue but still offer an opinion. Okay fair enough, you are not going to be able to follow every player/every league/club etc and if that's the case then a simple ' I haven't seen enough of him to judge' but some of these pundits just guess or go off 1 performance to assess how good they are.

Need more of the likes of Carragher & Neville who speak a good game.

Paul Merson on Watford: "I thought Nordin Amrabat was one of their best players last season, I thought he played well a lot of the time."

Amrabat spent last season on loan at Leganes.
Tbf Amrabat did play 3 times for Watford last season, so they must have been 3 sensational games

:lol::houllier:
but considering he is a well paid FOOTBALL pundit, that is annoyingly ignorant, stupid and lazy.

Then the prick contradicts himself by saying 'Utd have a chance tomorrow, but three weeks ago they would have had no chance'.
He just has to say stupid things to keep him in the job.

I need subs.
Asked why Watford appealed Deeneys red card Merse replied “why not? If someone got away with one by saying he didn’t know who Hitler was then they’ve got every chance”
He's a fool but that was spot on.

In his latest piece, he said Ederson is a top 10 goalkeeper of all time

Just looked back at the posts at the start of this thread and I still to this day can't believe that video with Merson and Thompson talking about Marco Silva.

Merson you can sort of write off as him being a bit of a bumbling idiot but Phil Thompson has managed at the highest level (when Gerard Houllier was ill), quite a staggeringly bad indictment on the sport right there.

Merson is hired to entertain viewers with his buffoonery on Soccer Saturday and The Debate. He's not there for his expert analysis, despite what Sky may claim.

Merse surprisingly gets a lot of correct results when he does them for sky or whatever. He's worth a follow if you're into your betting.
This old comment made me chuckle, given how much money Merson has lost gambling down the years. :D Also I will admit, I am a horrible gambler who has lost a lot of money to the bookies through the years. Unfortunately making predictions about winners and results isn't how you make money long-term, it's understanding value each time you place a bet.

"If Spurs win the FA cup and don't finish in the top 4 it would be the worst season they've ever had."

"Odion Ighalo could be the final straw at Manchester United.

If that signing is a disaster then Ed Woodward and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are in big trouble.

Don’t get me wrong. He could rediscover the form he once he had at Watford and be a huge success. But he could be the biggest laughing stock the Premier League has ever seen.

Only time will tell."

What, bigger than Ali Dia?

Who's the biggest laughing stock? Ali Dia? He only played a few minutes right?
Ali Dia, Bebe, Andy Carroll, Alexis Sanchez, Boumsong, Roy Carroll, Bogarde, etc. Feels like they become laughing stocks for different reasons.

I wouldn't go that far, he proved to be a good player at Watford.

Nothing can be more embarrassing than the Ali Dia saga. Souness will never live that down (I’m sure it was souness but that was one of the most funniest and bizarre things I’ve ever come across)

Paul Merson been smoking the good stuff again this morning.

He’s absolutely baffled why Utd or City haven’t signed Harry Kane. Is it really that hard to understand?

He’s English, England captain, playing for another top 6 premier league team, on a long term contract, with a club who doesn’t need to sell and a chairman called Daniel Levy. Those points alone means you’ll need £150m+ just to get Levy to talk. No thanks. Not a chance Utd or City will pay that when the likes of Haaland and Mbappe will be available next summer. He needs to read the news a bit more and realise Utd are bartering with a £108m signing never mind what Kane would cost.

Merson also thinks Liverpool could finish 4th...

Glad someone brought this up, the guy is a buffoon and it baffles me how this guy wasn't cut from sky during the recent cull. Spurs would price any club out of a sale, Levy would demand at least 200m for kane and no one is worth that much. Chelsea spent over 200m this summer and I'd rather have all the signings they made over having kane in my team and not improving everywhere else.

One out of two ain't bad?

When you have the likes of Merson and Keane saying 'just sign Kane' and Dim Tim saying 'not necessarily Sancho, but Grealish and Bale, plus they've got Dan James' it's no wonder ridiculous expectations and skewed perceptions run riot among the fanbase. I'm no fan of the Glazers nor Woodward and the book that some insider will write about the post-Fergie period in a few years will be an absolute corker, but transfer talk like this on Sky and on Twitter just reenforces the view that transfer dealings are like plucking apples off a tree.

Iv seen reports that Merton was not let go by Sky because they were afraid he would turn to drink again . That cannot be a reason to keep someone in a high profile job surely

Tony Pullis was saying the same, that's Utd should sign Kane.

The English media loving of this guy is unbelievable. For the price, age and injuries he's had, this would be a disaster.

He also is getting a dodgy injury record. Has Harry Kane reached his best where the other two have room to get even better.

It's such lazy punditry. They just think in their heads "Oh Utd sold Lukaku, they need a replacement, they should buy Kane". The number of times I've heard pundits say they aren't convinced with Martial being a striker, it's a joke. They've literally not watched Martial last season. He has been arguably our best player last season and brought out goals in other players around him too. Even Scholes started changing his tune on Martial after initially insisting we needed to get Kane.

I genuinely wouldn't be that excited if we did sign Kane. Yes he scores a shed load of goals, but you have to play in a style to suit him. Lukaku has delivered similar numbers to Kane throughout his career. Yet, I was delighted when we got rid of him. Lukaku is not Kane, but its an example that you can still have goal scorers and they are not neccessarily the solution.

That's what staying at Spurs has done to him, not because he's not been winning things but because Levy won't sign another half decent striker to take the pressure off. Kane plays every England game and starts for Spurs even when not fully fit, he's 27 but injures are getting more common and he's had no real break this summer again. Think the time to sign him is past now.

Kane's a great player and has been for some time but for those reasons it's definitely not the surefire hit transfer these pundits are making it out to be, plus what are Tottenham doing while we're marching in to sign him up?

Sums up a huge amount of pundits. Prime example was last night’s commentary of Jorginho’s pen on DAZN. Matt Upson seemed amazed by the technique, and said that he must have been watching Bruno. I barely watch any Italian football, and I knew about how he took them before he moved to Chelsea.

I genuinely have no idea why someone would value the opinion of a pundit, unless they were watching the team every game, as they are clearly just repeating opinions of other pundits/journalists.

Yeah they embarass themselves when they come out with something which every fan watching already knows. Chelsea and Utd fans have been arguing on Twitter for months about who started that penalty technique!
