I would like to see this kid start a few efl cup games and go on loan in Jan. I think we need to look at loaning players when they turn 18 if we feel they can break though so they have valuable first team experience. Gomes should have been loaned, Chong should have been loaned earlier than now and Garner needs a loan this season (should've been loaned last season).Greenwood was a different case as he was always gonna get first team minutes. If our highly rated youngsters aren't making match day squads then they're better off playing in the Championship/ league 1/abroad than the U23s.

Agreed. Looks assured and almost ready for this level. Im sure its a factor in the clubs thinking when it comes to adding players in this position

Dont think I've seen much of him, can one of his regular watchers tell me how he stylistically plays? Who could he be compared to?

Don’t know if I’ve seen a centre back quite like that, playing wise he makes me think about Michael Essien, Chelsea midfielder. Looks very strong, quick, assured, proactive thinking, very good touch and passing technique but not a hint of baroque showing off. It’s going to be really interesting towatch his development.

When Grealish went through Fosu Mensa and half our team at a point in the second half, I had that good feeling of ‘yeah, but you’ve got to pass Mengi too ..’ And that’s where he ended, sure enough.

Hopefully this guy gets a few games and stakes a claim this season. Tuanzebe seems to be a lost cause and Bailly is a walking injury so that 3rd CB spot is pretty much up for grabs.

Smaller version of Stam, does everything comfortably, no real weaknesses his game. Will be Interesting how he gets on against fully mature players, looks good so far I have to say.

A talented talented defender. His composure and positioning is top 1% percentile for that age

He is like this perfect example of the newer generation of footballers; big, strong, athletic ball-carrier with good positioning.

Very different to the likes of Evans and Pique to compare to the other 2 top CBs we have seen for United at junior levels.

Good hips on him. All he needs now is a bit of experience at the top level to ensure his composure.

If we do land up spending big on a Sancho and run out of budget for a centre-half, I wouldn't mind seeing how he develops with the intermittent appearance in the 1st team. Then decide if we need an Upamecano next season.

He's 6ft. Has he stopped growing?

If he is as good as people say he is and he looks in that video then I'd rather we buy a left footed CB this window.

Honestly, looks good. Should be in the side with Bailly and Lindelof as back up rotation pieces for him till he's experienced enough to secure a first xi spot. Why buy Upemacano when we have this kid, who is a few years younger and costs 80m less.

Looks like he has everything it takes to be a top defender - decision-making, composure, positioning, reading of the game, leadership, comfortable with the ball at feet. He should still grow a bit more, hopefully at least. And fingers crossed he doesn’t have injury issues, our homegrown defensive talents seem to have the injury curse since like Wes Brown?

Bernard seems to have stepped up and improved as well, which is always a good thing.

People who follow the youth setup more closely - does he have any flaws to his game? Loss of concentration, rashness, etc? YouTube compilations always make players look good.

He didn't play for U23s and training with first team, also played in our only preseason friendly game. Maybe he will be part of first team squad this season.

I would think he’s guaranteed to be named to the squad for a few games if Smalling ends up getting sold. He would be the only remaining CB outside of the starters who isn’t made of glass.

Lets not jinx him this early in his career.

Woooah that youtube vid.

Woah I know its stupid to judge a player based on youtube highlights but honestly I see a lot of those highlights but rarely if ever I get the feeling of watching someone special.
I got that feeling here like 10 seconds into the vid.
I just stood up after 10 seconds and was like dayuuum this kid will be great. Like I didnt expect that, wasnt ready to be so impressed.

Whats the talk about him as a left back?

He could be stronger in the air. It's the only thing. But it's not like he is going to be worse in the air than Lindelof eventually IMO.

Personally, I prefer a CB with a bit more height, he's only young so he still might grow and inch or two. Although 6ft isn't the end of the world for a CB especially for one with his talent.

Height doesn't matter if you can jump. Anyway there's still a chance Mengi will grow, he's a young lad.

What is important though is he's the perfect modern defender, very comfortable on the ball.

Height shmite.

Didn't affect Walter Samuel or Cannarvaro who was practically a midget.

Mengi and Tuanzebe are the reasons we ain't signing a new CB this summer.
Agree with this. I cant say I've ever been particularly blown away by Tuanzebe, but Mengi looks very, very exciting. Unlikely to figure much this season, but he could easily be one of those who gets an opportunity due to an injury or two and instantly just belongs there - similar to how Rashford emerged.
