Yeah, Dortmund actually manage their finances on a day to day basis and review how much income from tickets they received that very day before they make any decisions. It’s mad really, you would think a club that big with turnover in the hundreds of millions would produce forecasts on a quarterly basis. I imagine that if they did something like that before the virus hit when they were at nearly 100% capacity they might say something like “significant player sales remain a key component of our finance management”. I mean in the absolutely hypothetical and in no way real scenario where that actually happened, you would imagine that a net expenditure of over £40m wasn’t something that they were expecting to do this summer. Luckily they are easily going to be able to cover that type of completely hypothetical and in no way actually real financial black hole in their books with a mighty 20% capacity.

It looks like they easily have £40m to spend on transfer this season without significant sales.

Theres a good reason why United are calling their bluff here, their finances are public.
The point is that a gradual increase in crowds, starting at 20%, means less strain on their finances 6 months after the shutdown. Unless they actually based a worst case scenario on more supporters being let in months earlier, then there's no way this isn't a major upside for them. It's not like they are on the verge of going bust either, they can easily finance the losses and aim for success on the pitch this season and trying to achieve similar sums for Sancho next summer.

Seems ridiculous to haggle so that Dortmund put their price down by what... 20 million?

We'll lose a lot more than that when we don't finish top 4 and don't win anything yet again.

Yep. And I'm sure all of these players can't wait to join us next summer when we - again - struggle to get top 4 over the line.

This club has become such a joke.
Given he's not desperate to leave Dortmund ( he prefers playing for us not badly enough to create a ruckus), I imagine he'd be more than happy to consider moves to Livepool and Chelsea next summer should they be interested, let alone the Spanish biggies.

You have to hand it to United's negotiation team for their innovative tactics if nothing else. They seem to be trying to call Dortmund's bluff in the belief that Dortmund are desperate to sell him this summer. I hope they know what they're doing but the impression is that Dortmund are not only not desperate but actually don't want to sell him.

The "we're willing to walk away, we have Grealish, Bale, etc lined up" briefings only make them look even more stupid when said player signs somewhere else.

It's painful to watch. It's like a western tourist trying to negotiate in the Bangkok markets for the first time.

You have to feel for Ole in all of this. After the shambles of last summer they're looking like they will outdo themselves again this summer.
And who told you that is United's negotiating tactic? You are reading things off Twitter and treating them as facts? It is only painful to watch if you are deluded enough to believe those stories. Ole knows what he wants the Club have told him what he can get and the rest is noise. As it stands, United are not buying Sancho because they can't afford him. It's hardly the crime of the century. The fact that Sancho is not pushing for a move tells you that United have not seriously shown Dortmund that they want Sancho at all costs.Reality is there is no money. No football club apart from Chelsea are spending record amounts which should be a clear sign to everyone that there is no money in football at the moment. Manchester United are not immune to that.

This has been a really tough transfer saga for me to understand, but I guess it boils down to one question, could we afford to pay Dortmund what they are asking. Pretty clear that if we meet their asking price we get him.

If we cant afford it, then I genuinely understand why the club is trying to bluff Dortmund into selling him for a lower price, and I understand why we haven't gone to a fallback option... which has very much been our mentality under the Ole regime, dont fall back to lesser talent wait and get the right person.

If we can afford him, then I don't understand why the club is playing it this way, at the very least we end up paying what Dortmund want in 2-3 weeks and lose valuable time with him in the squad etc... but at worst this tactic has backed Dortmund into a corner that even if we offer what they want they may not accept it just to save face and know that will get at least what we have offered for him next summer.

Unfortunately unless we sign him, we will probably never get a concrete answer to this question.

I do really want him to sign, I feel like he completes our first choice attack, but I think there is more chance of it not happening at this point.

If we dont finish top 4 this season then you can say bye to alot of players that be available.

We are by far the worst at getting our transfers done. We should of been getting this deal organised before the window was ever open. Ziyech would of been an amazing purchase for RW , he went to Chelsea for peanuts in comparison to other targets. I have a feeling VDB will be our only signing now that Sancho deal is dead in the water.

We will claim covid 19 issues and no value in the market etc.

That's always been my strategy with the ladies.
Should've stumped up the money to buy Jadon a proper drink instead of hoping one half-of-mild would do the trick.

Now it's 10 minutes til closing and we're left with the exciting prospect of a pot noodle and a wank.

We would have gained 20 millon if we started Sancho at the beginning of the season with some albeit little preseason with the team from increased advertising revenue, shirt selling etc.

I really don't get how people are so hung up on that €45m loss Dortmund made just because they released their annual report a couple of weeks earlier than United. I expect that with all the uncertainty around the virus clubs actually calculated their entire season without fans, anything else would have been reckless and thus 20% capacity will be a very welcomed sight for everyone, even if it doesn't immediately put everyone back into the black.
The point is that their previous quarterly results stated that significant player sales would continue to be an important function of their financial model.

So just to run the club normally before this virus they had to sell players.

Since then they have a net spend of €41m and reported an operating loss of €45m.

If Mbappe leaves next summer, surely its easy for PSG to pay that amount of money for another top class replacement.
Yeah maybe PSG would be the team. But i'm not sure that they would want to replace a galactico french player in Mbappe with Jadon Sancho.
For all Sanchos talent that would be a huge downgrade for PSG. Not just on the pitch but also for their image as a club.
To try to save face they probably would pay 120 mill for Camavinga or buy the next french superstar forward who will inevitably break out this season.

How come we lost so many muppets to Sancho starting for Dortmund

But didn't lose any when the Dortmund camp said that Sancho was 100% staying a month or so ago?

Is there another club of United's size with a comparable number of failed transfer sagas?

And people wonder how United fell from being PL and CL contenders to this... No, it is not just about SAF retiring. Take what is happening here and do it a year in and a year out with different players. After a certain period of iterations, you will have missed out on enough WC talent to no longer be able to compete at the top.

Well, a lot of these pages were fueled by those constant "briefs", so...

There were no briefs . There were no ITKs there was just page after page of people saying happy sancho day and endlessly reposting tweets from people who were just making things up hoping people would fall for it

The lesson is to stop believing these people have inside information or that they know anything when they are just guessing stuff

I try to imagine if the situation was reversed, how we would feel. We have a German international who only moved a couple seasons ago, and a big German club is in for him after a great year. He's done really well for us, but we know he's not a United fan or really has any ties to us. We're not about to win the league anytime soon, and haven't really come close in the CL.

I would expect that player to leave, and more or less with my blessing as a fan. I would want us to hold out so we don't get fleeced, but wouldn't care about 10m one way or the other. But, I would have wanted us to get him out early, so if we had to replace him that could also happen early.

Because at the back of my head, the difference between elite and the rest is a fraction of a percentage. And if his motivation is slightly down, that will show on the pitch.

So we'll see. I don't think if you're the Dortmund coaching staff you can completely trust that he - a player with known attitude issues in the past - is going to be as motivated as last year. And 100m is a huge fee for such a relatively unproven player. With that and their scouting network they could easily pick out 3 or 4 more talents to improve them in other areas. Or keep 50m in case of a winter spike in Covid.

This is very much Utd style. Spunk all the money on a big name and leave other areas of the squad weak. We will get Sancho and we will pay every euro Dortmund want. That’s what we do.

Sancho and VdB would be a very good window.

Club and Woody acting so lame, no wrenches being thrown by player or anything to match the "get the price down" strategy and pay Sancho the difference, how much does he want MUFC? Perhaps to Sancho he can wait for a Chelsea or Liverpool offer just as well and doesnt mind whichever, how high is the player determination to come to MUFC? And if we can afford, why wait so long to still pay full price and look like a broken piggy bank anyone can rob? Some strange things in this saga.

So you have an edgy new shirt design - and don't sign a potential world class player ahead of it's launch because you want to save £15 - £20m.

You are trying to play hardball based on Covid against a team that plays in a country that has handled it reasonably well and is about to start allowing crowds in, when you play in a country where the covid response could have been handled better by basing decisions on a flock of parrots crapping on a bunch of random options rather than the shitshow of a government we currently have.

So they will gradually recover some cash flow whereas you are looking down the barrel of a cash flow drought for the forseeable future, but it's ok because you have drained your liquidity over the last few months stalling on the transfer fee to cover costs of running the club, rather than using that liquidity to support the purchase and get some buzz about new Merch for the season with Sancho all over it.

What a genius business mind Woody has!

I’ve always felt even at the beginning of the window that just Sancho alone would be a good window. Good in the sense it’s a coup that sets us up well for the next 10 years. It’s not good in the sense it still leaves us short in other areas. But getting Sancho is critical as options like him don’t come around often. We can plug other areas in following windows with players that will always be available. Getting VDB and Sancho would be a very good window.

Sancho would be great, but the problem is that we won't sign him because Dortmund said ages ago they want it sorted before their training camp started, that passed. So now even if we wait til the last week, the only way this happens is if Sancho causes a huge shit show like Dembele did to force the move. I don't see that happening when Dortmund was pretty fair on their stance, named a fair price all things considered, and we still decided to play the same dumb tactic that never works for us.

Your post makes footballing sense but there is a reason why Glazers are very wealthy business people. They don’t just go slapping stacks on a table. Every good businessman will push every transaction to the limit. We hate it as fans and so do coaches. But it’s always a business to Glazers and nothing else.

True. And United has been very poor in that regard. Lack of alternatives has been a huge issue since Fergie retired. United usually had a plan B that would work out equally or better in some cases. Targeted players would be more inclined to push for a transfer because they know if they don't get this move, United could get another player. We don't do that now
It’s a bit weird because Ole seems to have a clear plan on who and what he wants. I’d be really surprised if he just gave Sancho with no backup in there. Could also be that he was told that Sancho would be attainable.

In any case, we really need to get our heads sorted and move on to another target if we can’t get Sancho in this summer

Well, if we actually get Sancho then I doubt any of the fans will see it as "boring". The problem is we might not actually get that deal done.

There would be spare cash if we,you know, sold one or three fringe players.

Yes man, the board is only good at siphoning money from the club. This is just an absolute disgrace that we are just moaning about a single player for the whole window.
I would be damn sad if they sack solskjaer this season if we don’t perform w

Agree with your point that we have not shown any serious interest till now to Dortmund, we have rather baulked at the huge price that has been set given the time.

We are just trying for the sake of it by trying to offer different combinations of up front, installments and add ons that Dortmund are not willing to accept. There would have been more noise from united or Sancho's camp if the valuation difference was just 10-15 mil as in the case of Kai Havertz to Chelsea.

Absolutely no signs that it's happening but just let's keep hoping.

Real and Barca are out.

Real are already preparing everything for their own blockbuster transfer (Mbappe).

Barca simply doesn't have any money, they're in really bad shape. They had to do this ridiculous Artur-Pjanic swap just to sugarcoat their finances. They can't even pay 25 million for Depay right now.
