Hopefully this season Ole pushes Pogba a bit further up and asks Bruno to drop down a bit, basically playing with 2 8s. I also want to see Fred behind them to help with his energy and pressing.

I'm just not fond of having a number 10, they are dead anyways. Pushing Bruno down a bit will help us control the midfield a lot more than the current second striker role he's been assuming. The Sevilla game was encouraging in terms of how our midfield was deployed and hopefully we see the same this season.

Not gonna happen. We played a 4-2-3-1 against Aston Villa, with Rashford at no. 10.

Sometimes I really wonder what's going on with the tactics.

Fecking hate this 4231. Feels like it doesn't help us to play at our fullest. We also unnecessarily lose control of the midfield at times. 4-3-3 would be idea with everyone involved. Push back Bruno a bit and Pogba up. This way we both help have more control in midfield and add more creativity with Pogba pushed up a little bit.

Always painful to watch Bruno standing near Martial while Pogba is being swarmed alone in midfield with the other midfielder positioned between the CBs.

If Ole's interim period didn't end that discussion, then what will?
If my memory serves me right by the end of that season there were matches he struggled despite being deployed such. He was heavily marked and effectively out of the game. It was pretty bad so some fans were rude to him at the end of season I think. So Ole changed to the double pivot last season?

Anyway my memory is pretty bad. Any help?

He was indeed man marked in some games, which caused our creativity to be greatly reduced since it runs through him most of the time.

I do remember Ole switching to the double pivot as soon as the Liverpool game, where Pogba played beside Scott and helped us see out a draw; so he didn't spend very long in his favoured position. Ole would alternate between the 2, finally settling on his preferred 4-2-3-1.

The confusing thing to me was that Ole addressed the problem of not having any creativity besides Pogba by buying Bruno, but then is still sticking to the 4-2-3-1 which in my opinion is not as good a fit for either player.

It's a pretty strange setup. The CDM dropping between the CB's is fine, but then Bruno being so high up means there are not that many options besides Pogba in the middle.

Given the fact that most teams will target Pogba to reduce his effectiveness, removing his options in the middle doesn't make much sense.
I hope we switch over to a 4-3-3 as well, but Ole hasn't shown any signs of doing so thus far.

I was hoping the last few games toward the end of last season where we looked hopeless in midfield, failing to control games would have opened his eyes but hearing that he still went for it in the Villa game is a bit of a bummer. Hopefully the system is closer to what we played against Sevilla than his usual 4231 with Bruno a glorified second striker. At least in the Sevilla game Bruno did actually play in midfield instead of being a second striker.

Agreed, Bruno was brilliant against Sevilla, probably the best I’ve seen him play. Him and that role would make us a far better team I think.

I think the signing of Beek may indicate that Ole prefers Pogba playing deep.

I honestly think that was the worst he's ever played for us.

Constantly fouled Palace all game. 70% passing accuracy. Looked slower and tumescent.

Hopefully he wasn't match fit and not any lingering effects from Covid-19.

Not a great game. Gave away the ball too often with some lazy passing. Outmuscled way too often as well.

Wasn't sharp at all. Poor performance. No idea where this attitude criticism is coming from. Just making things up.

People are going to blame the guy that just recovered from COVID instead of Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw, Rashford and Mctominay who all had worse performances

He looked like he didn't want the ball at times, but I don't think you can really point the finger at any one player (except maybe Lindelof:lol:)

The whole team didn't look up to it.

He recovered last week from Coronavirus and Ole played him. He was horribly unfit and it showed.

Dog shit.

He is just so inconsistent. You dont know which Pogba will turn up. McArthur rang rings around him.

No idea why he started. With him returning to training later than others due to covid, should have given more time. VdB would have done perfectly well instead. Probably Bruno would have played deeper to accomodate VdB.

I'm usually a big fan of his but I thought he was garbage today, his passing was all over the place. In his defence he's only just recovered from Covid which probably had a lot to do with him lacking any match sharpness.

How can anyone Blame Pogba! He is coming back from cove and has trained for about 5 days. We had countless other players worse today, Rashford, Maguire, Lindelof, James, Mctominay I could go on.

He was shit today and he's been shit for a while. Not buying this covid nonsense, he was in full training for over a week. He was poor in the close to the season too.

Far too hot and cold to be close to world class. I don't give a shit how good he is when he's on a high, because it's never consistent. Want to see VDB instead of him from here, unless VDB is poor and Pogba shows some fight.

Honestly thought VdB would start over him considering this, but he started.

Usual dogshit from him to be honest. Nothing to see here. 4 years and he makes the same brainless errors. We know he has quality and there are many players in the team who are worse but it’s laughable how much this guy cost.

To all those mentioning he had covid, I agree with you. He can't be expected to perform the same, and he shouldn't have played if not fit.

My problem is that hes the CM who should be running the game and he hid behind an opposition defender for most of the game.

He has been crap. If he's not fit, we should have started VDB instead. I predicted VDB to start this ahead of him anyway, so why did we do the opposite ? He's 100% not ready to start the season.
