@JPRouve Did you hear that? I just heard Deschmaps tell Martial to "lesse la passe, Tony lesse le" when he tried to press. :wenger:
He was actually asking them to press the ball carrier when they go wide and let them pass the ball back and centrally. And Martial was a lot better in the second half, Giroud also made a big difference in terms of intensity and physicality.

Hope that means he's on track to take Giroud's starting place

That’s fantastic to see. Ole deserves massive credit too, his man management with Martial (and the wider squad) has been exceptional but most of all he’s put faith in Martial as a starter and he’s beginning to get the rewards.

Im one of Martials biggest supporters in every regard but unfortunatelt the reality is it would take a miracle for Giroud not to start at the Euros. Either in the case of an injury, or Giroud managing less than 8 starts in the league or Martial putting in a 30-35 goal season where United win trophies. Other than that Giroud starts, the reality is Deschamps wants an aerial and general physical presence upfront.

It's also possible to have Martial-Giroud-Mbappe up front if he impresses over his next few caps.

The only thing Giroud is better at is heading, which he's a specialist to be fair. Still, I would contest that Martial is a specialist with his head and the only difference between the two is Giroud's height advantage. The myths that Martial doesn't have the physicality of a CF, the pressing, the hold up play, etc. are constantly contradicted every time the man is on the pitch, but they still incredulously persist for some. Last night for example, the guy was winning foul after foul because defenders can't get the ball off him or nudge him off it without fouling. The truth is Martial has been getting better and better at combining his strength, ball control and trickery and will soon be unplayable as a CF, a nightmare for defenders. Ole can see it and that's all that matters for Man Utd's attack. For France I don't even think Giroud is the biggest problem for pushing their attack to another level, I believe it's Griezmann who's currently holding a starting position in the middle that he doesn't deserve, and which consequently weakens their midfield as Kante is getting old and isn't physically as good at doing the midfield hustle work of two players. Drop Grizzou, play a actual midfield three, a front three, go on the front foot and no team is coming close in my view. I'm not holding my breath though, Deschamps is as stubborn as they come.

I have no idea if we will sign anyone else this summer. But I for one, can't wait to see Bruno, Pogba, Greenwood (when he has stopped being a silly boy) and potentially Rashy combine with Martial again. At times last season it was an absolute joy to watch and the best football we have played since Fergie retired. If we had people in the stands again then that lot will get bums off seats. I absolutely love watching Martial in full flow. If we were looking to sign him from another club and we checked out his videos on YouTube we would be even more excited than we are about Sancho imo.

Martial in the last 6 months has been my favourite player to watch. So elegant, when he picks the ball up you almost know something is about to happen. His touch, passing, vision, shooting is improving all the time, on top of that he is probably one of the best technical dribblers in the PL.

Mon Dieu, i know that Deschamps has found great success with this French NT, but goddamnit his tumescent style of football is so hard to watch. To make things worse France is seeping with talent.

I have a feeling this year is going to be Martial's.. he will really kick on and cement his place among elite strikers of the game this season. Everything seems to fit in for him. The main thing would be to remain fit, which hopefully he can manage.

Excellent to hear.

Deschamps doesn't give our praise lightly, i'm glad Martial affected the game in a positive way when given the chance.

I'd love to see him with Mbappe, he links up so well with Rashford and Mbappe plays a similar 1-2 game, they'd be insane together IMO.

Hope Martial can keep this up now as he's clearly brought himself into the squad again.

Deschamps highlighted Martials good link up play with Griezman in his post conference. Martial is just one of those player who links up well with anyone in attack.

Heck he even links up, play well with non technical players such as Lukaku the few times they played together under Mourinho.

That's the beauty of being a natural with the ball to feet, it's easy to find connection with anyone around.

I really hope he becomes a starter for France

I still think he lacks that killer mentality in big matches. And I think being a full International for the best International team in the World, he'll get that extra confidence.

Deschamps has been greatly influenced by his stay at Juventus. Also by former coach Aimee Jaquet. Deschamps was a teenager when he saw the very talented 1982 and 1986 French teams bow out of the competition in heartbreaking fashion. Those defeats have scarred him deeply. That's why he plays defensively. And in Giroud, he sees former co player Dugary. He probably considers Giroud like a son.

Yeah, let's also not just disregard just how great Giroud has been.

For context Platini's record is a lot better since he scored them in 72 games. But Giroud has the same goal ratio than Henry.

Yes and Platini is a midfield player. Lucky I got to take my picture with Platini.

Platini was really a midfielder for France, he was more often than not a second striker/#10.

I just saw that Anto didn't make the FIFA 21 ratings top 100 list. I bet a huge chunk of the nonsense peddlers that will be littered around here trying to convince themselves and everyone else of the type of player he is, will also be FIFA experts and avid followers

To be honest, this is the season when all the weight of scoring goals shifted to him. New season, new pressure.

But watching him play with France, he looks like a matured attacker now. Nightmare when he is on that form, can't wait!

Ole wants VDB together with Bruno to share the scoring burden that Martial and Greenwood have. Both Martial and Greenwood have a lots more to their games with their linkups, passing... And if they don't feel too pressured to score and can play their game, its gonna be good for the team and for them too.

After the lockdown up to now I'm not confident about Rashford and i don't know when he starts to try playing as a winger again. One of the traits, maybe first of all is to (at least) try and beat defenders, he is not doing it atm. I hope he find his form asap.

Right now Martial is the hope up front and his understanding with midfielders is key to decide matches.

Strange how he decided to self isolate during a football game .

This is why people say we should sign Kane or a proper centre forward as Martial will never be that for us .

Wasn't sharp either. Poor performance just like many of our attackers bar Bruno.

Martial's problem is that he can only play well when he has inverted forwards around him.

Greenwood only came for the second half & by 20 mins we just went all out with all our attackers all over the place.

Rashford is in some horrible post injury form that maybe more permanent than people realise.

He is a link player and not a poacher- we dont need a poacher because it's not like we have all these players out wide providing crosses to one either.

When the inverted wide players are not in form or not playing it (James the touchline player vs Greenwood) makes Martial even hard to link up with anyone.

Greenwood got into more and better positions in 20 minutes though. He just can't play up front alone. He simply does not have the attributes for it. He needs to play behind or as Aubameyang, coming in from the left.
